Systemic Family Therapy for Families who have Experienced Trauma: A Randomised Controlled Trial

This paper describes a randomised controlled trial (RCT) investigation of the added value of systemic family therapy (SFT) over individually focused cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for families in which one or more members has suffered trauma and been referred to a community-based psychotherapy centre. The results illustrate how an apparently robust design can be confounded by high attrition rates, low average number of therapeutic sessions and poor protocol adherence. The paper highlights a number of general and specific lessons regarding the resources and processes involved that can act as a model for those planning to undertake studies of this type and scope. A key message is that the challenges of conducting RCTs in ‘real world’ settings should not be underestimated. The wider implications in relation to the place of RCTs within the creation of the evidence base for complex psycho-social interventions is discussed and the current movement towards a phased mixed-methods approach, including the appropriate use of RCTs, which some might argue is a return to the original vision of evidence-based practice (EBP), is affirmed.

Family communication, genetic testing and colonoscopy screening in hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer: a qualitative study

Objective: Genetic testing and colonoscopy is recommended for people with a strong history of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, families must communicate so that all members are aware of the risk. The study aimed to explore the factors influencing family communication about genetic risk and colonoscopy among people with a strong family history of CRC who attended a genetic clinic with a view to having a genetic test for hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC).

An Irish three-generation family of Cornelia de Lange syndrome displaying autosomal dominant inheritance

The existence of familial de Lange syndrome has been documented in sibs and in parent-child families, but the inheritance pattern continues to be the cause of much debate. We describe a classically affected neonate with de Lange syndrome, an affected mother and probably affected maternal grandmother. These cases show evidence for a dominantly inherited syndrome with a de Lange phenotype.

Association Study of SNAP25 and Schizophrenia in Irish Family and Case-Control Samples

SNAP25 occurs on chromosome 20p12.2, which has been linked to schizophrenia in some samples, and recently linked to latent classes of psychotic illness in our sample. SNAP25 is crucial to synaptic functioning, may be involved in axonal growth and dendritic sprouting, and its expression may be decreased in schizophrenia. We genotyped 18 haplotype-tagging SNPs in SNAP25 in a sample of 270 Irish high-density families. Single marker and haplotype analyses were performed in FBAT and PDT. We adjusted for multiple testing by computing q values. Association was followed up in an independent sample of 657 cases and 411 controls.
