OBJECTIVE: To assess whether thalamic strokes presenting with a central Horner's syndrome (HS) show specific clinicoanatomic patterns. METHODS: From the Lausanne Stroke Registry (period 1993 to spring 2002), the authors selected all patients with thalamic stroke presenting with ipsilateral HS. Patients with complete infarction of the posterior cerebral artery territory, with involvement of middle cerebral artery territory or bilateral lesions, were excluded. Lesions on brain MRI were correlated with standard neuroanatomic templates. RESULTS: Nine patients with thalamic infarction presenting with central HS were found; all showed contralateral ataxic hemiparesis (AH). Lesions involved the anterior or paramedian thalamus and extended to the hypothalamic or rostral paramedian mesencephalic area in all but one subject. Associated clinical signs included dysphasia (two patients), somnolence (six), vertical gaze paresis (two), asterixis (two), and hemihypesthesia (three). CONCLUSION: The alternate clinical pattern of central HS with contralateral AH is a stroke syndrome of the diencephalic-mesencephalic junction, resulting from the involvement of the common arterial supply to the paramedian/anterior thalamus, the posterior hypothalamus and the rostral paramedian midbrain.

We combined structural analysis, thermobarometry and oxygen isotope geochemistry to constrain the evolution of kyanite and/or andalusite-bearing quartz veins from the amphibolite facies metapelites of the Simano nappe, in the Central Alps of Switzerland. The Simano nappe records a complex polyphase tectonic evolution associated with nappe stacking during Tertiary Alpine collision (D1). The second regional deformation phase (132) is responsible for the main penetrative schistosity and mineral lineation, and formed during top-to-the-north thrusting. During the next stage of deformation (D3) the aluminosilicate-bearing veins formed by crystallization in tension gashes, in tectonic shadows of boudins, as well as along shear bands associated with top-to-the-north shearing. D2 and D3 are coeval with the Early Miocene metamorphic peak, characterised by kyanite + staurolite + garnet + biotite assemblages in metapelites. The peak pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions recorded are constrained by multiple-equilibrium thermobarometry at 630 +/- 20 degrees C and 8.5 +/- 1 kbar (similar to 27 km depth), which is in agreement with oxygen isotope thermometry indicating isotopic equilibration of quartz-kyanite pairs at 670 +/- 50 degrees C. Quartz-kyanite pairs from the aluminosilicate-bearing quartz veins yield equilibration temperatures of 645 +/- 20 degrees C, confirming that the veins formed under conditions near metamorphic peak. Quartz and kyanite from veins and the surrounding metapelites have comparable isotopic compositions. Local intergranular diffusion in the border of the veins controls the mass-transfer and the growth of the product assemblage, inducing local mobilization of SiO2 and Al2O3. Andalusite is absent from the host rocks, but it is common in quartz veins, where it often pseudomorphs kyanite. For andalusite to be stable at T-max, the pressure in the veins must have been substantially lower than lithostatic. An alternative explanation consistent with structural observations would be inheritance by andalusite of the kyanite isotopic signature during polymorphic transformation after the metamorphic peak.

1. SUMMARY Based on functional and homing properties, two subsets of memory T lymphocytes have been defined both in humans and in mice. Central memory T cells (TCM cells) express the lymph node homing receptors CD62L and CCR7, have poor effector function and proliferate efficiently upon antigenic stimulation. Effector memory T cells (TEM cells) do not express CCR7, are mostly CD62L negative and therefore are excluded from lymph nodes, but are able to migrate to sites of inflammation where they exert immediate effector function by producing inflammatory cytokines and cytotoxic mediators. In the present work we have addressed two questions that emerged since the definition of TCM and TEM cells. Firstly, what are the priming conditions for generation of TCM and TEM and, secondly, what is the migratory capacity of TCM and TEM cells in inflammatory conditions. By using naive TCR-transgenic OT-I CD8+ T cells and OT-II CD4+ T cells and ovalbumin pulsed-mature dendritic cells (DCs) we set up an in vitro system in which the strength of T cell stimulation is controlled by varying the ratio of T cells and DCs and the duration of DC-T cell interaction. Using this system we found that precursors of TCM and TEM cells are generated at different strength of stimulation and that T cells capable of persisting in vivo in the absence of antigen and of mounting recall responses is optimally induced by intermediate stimulatory strength. In addition, we found that lymph nodes draining sites of mature DC or adjuvant inoculation recruit CD8+ CD62L- CCR7- effector and TEM cells. CD8+ T cell recruitment in reactive lymph nodes requires CXCR3 expression on T cells and occurs through high endothelial venules (HEVs) in concert with HEV lurninal expression of the CXCR3 ligand CXCL9. In reactive lymph nodes, recruited T cells establish stable interactions with and kill antigen-bearing DCs, limiting the ability of these DCs to activate CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Taken togther these data define conditions for the generation of TCM and TEM cells and define an inflammatory pathway of effector T cell migration in lymph nodes. The inducible recruitment of blood-borne effector and TEM CD8+ cells to lymph nodes may represent a mechanism for terminating primary and limiting secondary immune responses.

The Fuerteventura Jurassic sedimentary succession consists of oceanic and elastic deposits, the latter derived from the southwestern Moroccan continental margin. Normal mid-oceanic-ridge basalt (N-MORB) flows and breccias are found at the base of the sequence and witness sea-floor spreading events in the central Atlantic. These basalts were extruded in a postrift environment (post-late Pliensbachian), We propose a Toarcian age for the Atlantic oceanic floor in this region, on the basis of the presence higher up in the sequence of the Bositra buchi filament microfacies (Aalenian-Bajocian) and of elastic deposits reflecting tectono-eustatic events (e.g,, late Toarcian to mid-Callovian erosion of the rift shoulder). The S-l sea-floor oceanic magnetic anomaly west of Fuerteventura is therefore at least Toarcian in age. The remaining sequence records Atlantic-Tethyan basinal facies (e.g., Callovian-Oxfordian red clays, Aptian-Albian black shales) alternating with elastic deposits (e.g., Kimmeridgian-Berriasian periplatform calciturbidites and a Lower Cretaceous deep-sea fan system). The Fuerteventura N-MORB outcrops represent the only Early Jurassic oceanic basement described so far in the central Atlantic. They are covered by a 1600 m, nearly continuous sedimentary sequence which extends to Upper Cretaceous facies.
