The thesis reports on three studies which investigated the following phenomena. Adolescent day programs (ADPs) are the preferred treatment option for a substantial number of Australian adolescents whp suffer from mental health disorders, but little empirical research has been conducted on what sonstitutes an ADP, whether such programs have efficacy, and if they do, what factors contribute to their efficacy. The professional portfolio reviews the existing literature on parent abuse before considering the relevance of this information for clinical practice by examining four cases of parent abuse that were treated in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

This study investigated the Tripartite Influence Model of body image and eating disturbance in adolescent females. The model was found to be a satisfactory representation of the social, cultural and individual factors proposed to promote body dissatisfaction, dieting and bulimic behaviours in 14 to 18 year old girls. The portfolio presents four case situations in which the specialist knowledge of a clinical psychologist has shown to be beneficial to pediatric patients, their families, and medical staff at a major metropolitan hospital.

This thesis examines representations of death in a selection of contemporary texts for Australian adolescent audiences. It demonstrates that, although death is a complex subject, a characteristically Australian 'way of death' is identifiable in these fictions and it is invariably associated with issues of sexuality, gender and power.

Emotional intelligence includes one's ability to identify, use, understand and manage emotions. This thesis indicates that, when compared to peers with no convictions and those with violent convictions, adolescent sexual offenders have lower levels of emotional intelligence in general and, that, in particular, they had problems identifying, using and managing their emotions.

General practitioners fall into three categories in their pursuit of dietary counselling: little involvement, or provider of referrals, or they have strong involvement. The barriers to dietary counselling are inadequate partnerships with dietitians, patients suffering multiple medical conditions and the view that HMG-CoA-reductase-inhibitors (statins) reduce the need for dietary change.

Fish oil use in aquacultural feeds is an unsustainable practice. This study investigated the efficacy of vegetable oil inclusion on the growth, fatty acid composition and lipid metabolism of Murray cod. Results indicate that fish oil can be substituted only partially without compromising fish growth and final quality.

The thesis study was a cross-cultural comparison of the biopsychosocial predictors of body image perception and ideals among 294 Australian and 101 Fijian adolescents. The results demonstrated similarities across cultural groups, but parents, peers and the media were stronger influences for Fijians. These findings have implications for body image intervention programs. The portfolio presented a thorough review of the evidence for the cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) treatment option for adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). Four case studies are presented.
