OBJECTIVE: Because of its high prevalence, early screening for occupational asthma (OA) is crucial. We aimed to evaluate the screening performance of the Occupational Asthma Screening Questionnaire-11 items (OASQ-11) in a clinical setting. METHODS: Between January 2009 and December 2011, 169 workers referred for potential OA to our hospital completed the OASQ-11 and underwent workups to determine the final diagnosis. The discriminative abilities of the OASQ-11 as a whole and in relation to demographic and exposure parameters were determined by the area under the receiving operator characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: Model 1, consisting of the OASQ's items, showed fair discrimination (AUC, 0.69; 95% confidence interval, 0.58 to 0.80). Addition of age and exposure duration to model 1 improved discrimination (AUC, 0.80; confidence interval, 0.72 to 0.88). CONCLUSION: A simple model consisting of the OASQ-11's items, age, and exposure duration could well discriminate subjects with OA in a clinical setting.

The dopamine antagonist [3H]-domperidone-[3H]-DOM-bound to a single class of high-affinity (Kd = 1.24 +/- 0.14 nM) and saturable receptors on dispersed bovine anterior pituitary (AP) cells. The binding of [3H]-DOM was stereoselective and reversible with agonists and antagonists. Dopamine competitions for [3H]-DOM binding modeled best for a single site consistent with an interaction with a homogeneous population of receptors. The mean number of specific binding sites labeled by [3H]-DOM was 53,000 per cell in dispersed AP cells consisting of 42% lactotrophs. Dispersed bovine AP cells attached to extracellular matrix within 3 h, and prolactin secretion from these cells was effectively inhibited by dopamine. Several observations suggested that [3H]-DOM-labeled receptors on dispersed bovine AP cells were restricted to the outer plasma membrane and not internalized. These included (1) the rapid and complete dissociation of specific [3H]-DOM binding; (2) the ability of treatment with acid or proteolytic enzymes to entirely remove specifically bound [3H]-DOM, and (3) the lack of effect of metabolic inhibitors on specific [3H]-DOM binding.

Family cohesion and adaptability, as operationalised in the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scales III (FACES III), are two hypothesised dimensions of family functioning. We tested the properties of a French version of FACES III in school-children (mean age: 13 years; S.D:0.85) recruited from the general population and their parents. Separate confirmatory factor analyses were performed for adolescents and adults. The results of both analyses were compatible with a two-factor structure similar to that proposed by the authors of the original instrument. However, orthogonality between the two factors was only supported in the adult data. Internal reliability estimates were 0.78 and 0.68 in adolescents and 0.82 and 0.65 in adults, for cohesion and adaptability respectively.

Several methods and algorithms have recently been proposed that allow for the systematic evaluation of simple neuron models from intracellular or extracellular recordings. Models built in this way generate good quantitative predictions of the future activity of neurons under temporally structured current injection. It is, however, difficult to compare the advantages of various models and algorithms since each model is designed for a different set of data. Here, we report about one of the first attempts to establish a benchmark test that permits a systematic comparison of methods and performances in predicting the activity of rat cortical pyramidal neurons. We present early submissions to the benchmark test and discuss implications for the design of future tests and simple neurons models
