Phenyl and methyls (1) have found increasing interest in organic synthesis. They have been prepared from aldehydes or ketones (2) and selenols, from 1,1-bis(phenylseleno)-alkanes, and from 1,1,1-tris(seleno)-alkanes (5).

In a previous communication (2) the isolation of two defensive alkaloid, hippodamine and convergine, from the American ladybug Hippodamia convergens was reported. A preliminary chemical study (2) led to the hypothesis that hippodamine could be represented by (1), with unknown stereochemistry at carbon atom 2. Convergine was supposed to be a 3a or 6a hydroxyhippodamine.

Among the various proteins which are induced when human cells are are treatened with interferon, a predominant protein of unknown function, with molecular mass 56 kDa, has been observed. With the aim of exploring the molecular basis of the regulation of this protein and of its mRNA, in order to understand its biological functionand its possible contribution to the various antiviral and non-antiviral actions exerted by interferons.

The analysis of seabed structure is important in a wide variety of scientific and industrial applications. In this paper, underwater acoustic data produced by bottom-penetrating sonar (Topas) are analyzed using unsupervised volumetric segmentation, based on a three dimensional Gibbs-Markov model. The result is a concise and accurate description of the seabed, in which key structures are emphasized. This description is also very well suited to further operations, such as the enhancement and automatic recognition of important structures. Experimental results demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach are shown, using Topas data gathered in the North Sea off Horten, Norway.

This paper presents a new rate-control algorithm for live video streaming over wireless IP networks, which is based on selective frame discarding. In the proposed mechanism excess 'P' frames are dropped from the output queue at the sender using a congestion estimate based on packet loss statistics obtained from RTCP feedback and from the Data Link (DL) layer. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated through computer simulation. This paper also presents a characterisation of packet losses owing to transmission errors and congestion, which can help in choosing appropriate strategies to maximise the video quality experienced by the end user. Microalgae are a diverse group of organisms that form the basic component of many eco- systems. The systemic classification of algae is primarily based on their pigment composition and is divided into nine classes. The largest groups are Chlorophyceae (green algae), Phaeophyceae (brown algae), Pyrrophyceae (dinoflagellates), Chrysophyceae (golden brown algae), Bacillariophyceae (diatoms) and Rhodo phyceae (red algae). It has been estimated that between 22,000 and 26,000 species exist (Norton et al., 1996), of which only a few species have been identified to be useful for commercial application, such as Spirulina, Chlorella, Haematococcus, Dunaliella, Botryococcus, Phaeodactylum and Porphyridium. Several other species that are also cultivated commercially for the hatcheries in the aquaculture field include Chaetoceros, Crypthecodinium, Isochrysis, Nannochloris, Nitzschia, Schizochytrium, Tetraselmis and Skeletonema (Raja et al., 2008).

Volunteer administrators from 105 hospitals in five states in the northeast and southern United States provided open-ended survey responses about what they perceived to be the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing healthcare volunteer management. Taken together, these 105 hospitals used a total of 39,008 volunteers and 5.3 million volunteer hours during a 12-month period between 2010 and 2011. A qualitative content analysis of administrator responses suggests that primary challenges include volunteer recruitment and retention, administrative issues, and operational difficulties brought about by the current economic crisis. Key opportunities include more explicitly linking the volunteer function to hospital outcomes and community impact, expanding volunteer recruitment pools and roles and jobs, and developing organizational support for volunteers and making the volunteer management function more efficient and effective.
