Indole and carbazole alkaloids from Glycosmis montana with weak anti-HIV and cytotoxic activities

A diprenylated indole, (E)-3-(3-hydroxymethyl-2-butenyl)-7-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-1H-indole (1), and six known carbazole alkaloids were isolated from the twigs and leaves of Glycosmis montana Pierre (Rutaceae). Their structures were determined on the basis of analysis of spectral evidence including 1D and 2D NMR and MS. The alkaloids (1-3) exhibited weak to moderate take in vitro inhibitory activity against HIV replication in C8166 cells, and they (as well as carbalexine A and B) had cytotoxic activity against the human leukaemia cell line CCRF-CEM. Three new dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans, schilancifolignans A-C (1-3), together with thirteen known ones, were isolated from the leaves and stems of Schisandru lancifolia. The structures of 1-3 were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques. Three species of caligid copepods (Siphonostomatoida) belonging to genus Hermilius Heller, 1865 were recovered from the giant marine catfish, Arius thalassinus Ruppell, taken from the Persian Gulf. They are H. pyriventris Heller, 1865; H. longicaudus n. sp.; and H. longicornis Bassett-Smith, 1898. H helleri Pillai, 1963 is proposed to be relegated to the synonym of H pyriventris. A key to the eight species of Hermilius is provided.

Supply of Astaxanthin and its combinations through live feed (Moina micrura) enrichment affects the growth, survival and fatty acid profile of Macrobrachium rosenbergii larvae

A study was carried out with three replicates to determine the effects of feeding Moina micrura enriched with astaxanthin alone (M1) or astaxanthin in combination with either vitamin E (M2), vitamin D (M3) or Cod Liver oil (M4) on the growth, survival and fatty acid composition of giant fresh water prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) larvae. Growth rate was expressed as the time taken to the settlement of 95% post larvae. Maximum growth, the lowest time taken to the 95% PL settlement (38.5±0.50 days), was observed in larvae fed with M3 Moina. The highest survival rate (66.0±1.00%) was observed in those fed with M4 Moina and the second highest survival (61.0±1.00%) and growth rates (40.0±0.00 days) were shown with M2 Moina. The minimum values for both growth (42.5±0.50 days) and survival (33.0±1.50%) were observed in the group fed un-enriched Moina. Results also showed that the survival of prawn larvae increased as the quantities of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) increased in the dietary Moina. The highest levels of EPA (5.57±0.21%), DHA (3.50±0.21%) and highest total Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (HUFA) (13.87±0.68%) were seen in the Moina fed on astaxanthin and Cod Liver Oil (CLO). The results of the study showed that the nutritive quality of Moina, with respect to important fatty acids, can be increased by enrichment and will influence the growth, survival and the fatty acid composition of fresh water prawn larvae fed on them.

Shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricius) production in brackishwater ponds applied varying fertilizer combinations

Details are given of the production of Penaeus monodon in the Philippines reared in brackishwater earthen ponds applied with different fertilizer combinations, namely diammonium phosphate, urea and chicken manure. Results show that the shrimp showed higher yields in fertilized ponds, but increasing the concentration of fertilizers did not give a marked increase in yield - the excess fertilizer was wasted.

Just like in most determination keys this one is based on the "either-or" principle, i.e. there is a single alternatIve at each point. A specimen either fits all the characters recorded, or fails to conform to one or more characters and you should then proceed to the next number, keeping this up until the fish to be identified does fit all the characters.

A key to the families and genera of freshwater fishes of Tanzania

The purpose of this key is to facilitate rapid and accurate identification, in the field, for fisheries workers. It is therefore based as much as possible on external characters only and an attempt has been made to keep it simple and straight forward. The only real difficulty arises in clearly demarcating the numerous cichlid genera of the great lakes, despite the fact that these have been treated in separate sections for each lake. Moreover, it hasn't been possible to revise the key to the lake Nyasa genera (taken from Jackson, 1961) to any significant extent, my experience with L. Nyasa fishes being limited; also, a few new genera have been or are still in the process of being published and I unfortunately haven't had access to these papers. A short bibliography is appended covering the major publications relevant to the systematics of Tanzania freshwater fishes and the sources from which these keys have been drawn up.
