Esta investigación busca indagar el fenómeno de producción audiovisual indígena o video indígena, a la luz de los elementos teóricos que ofrece la categoría de agencia política. Por ello, la investigación intenta responder a la pregunta de si es posible definir o no dicha práctica como una experiencia de agencia, para lo cual analizamos los alcances que como ejercicios de ruptura, permiten las prácticas de representación y memoria en las narrativas audiovisuales de dos videos indígenas producidos en el Cauca, al sur de Colombia, planteados como estudio de caso. En el desarrollo de esta exploración, nos aproximamos a cuestiones importantes para la discusión como la apertura de sujetos, espacios y medios para la agencia, memorias alternativas, la construcción del relato histórico, las luchas indígenas, los agenciamientos simbólicos de los pueblos indígenas, las posibilidades políticas desde la comunicación alternativa, entre otras, cuestiones que permiten articular a la pregunta de investigación, preocupaciones de gran importancia en el ejercicio de indagación sobre la alteridad.

El presente trabajo pretende contribuir en la ampliación de un corpus de estudio sobre la imagen del afrodescendiente. Se trata del análisis de la novela Jonatás y Manuela, de la afroecuatoriana Luz Argentina Chiriboga y del video Ecuatoriano Freddy Quiñones, detenido por cruzar con luz roja en Chile. En ambas narrativas se muestra la subyugación a la que son sometidos los cuerpos de los afrodescendientes. Con este propósito se procura rastrear cómo la percepción del color, asociada a las marcas étnicas y racistas heredadas de los discursos coloniales del siglo XVI al XVIII y los nacionalistas del XIX, se resemantiza en el siglo XX exponiendo las tensiones entre etnia/territorio/cultura a través de sujetos sociales que tradicionalmente han carecido de espacios de visibilidad para su propia representación, como agentes históricos y de acción política. Con esta intención, vale entonces emprender nuestro recorrido junto a las reflexiones de Hering, Cunin, Ariza, Chaves, Ramos, Montelongo, Miranda y Handelsman, quienes exploran las continuidades y discontinuidades que los diferentes discursos canónicos han sustentado alrededor de la percepción del color de piel en relación a la “raza” y a la identidad latinoamericana. Además, de manera simultánea, se analizarán los escenarios de subyugación desde la enunciación, los conceptos de utopía y heterotopía –de Michael Focuault-. De este modo, por razones de organización del corpus de estudio, tanto la novela como el video serán estudiados en cada uno de tres capítulos que componen el presente trabajo desde la configuración del color y del cuerpo en distintos escenarios: primero, el de subyugación que produce perspectivas indicadas.

El presente es un informe de investigación acerca de las representaciones del migrante nacional en el cine y el video de productores ecuatorianos locales y residentes en el exterior. Para ello se analizó un conjunto de ocho películas de ficción dramática realizadas en Ecuador, España y Estados Unidos por cineastas o videastas de procedencia ecuatoriana. El análisis, tomando en cuenta el anclaje de los estudios visuales y los del discurso, implicó elaborar una herramienta propia y nueva para interrogar tales representaciones para denotar el discurso audiovisual subyacente. Tal matriz de análisis crítico del discurso audiovisual nos ubicó como espectadores críticos. Desde allá se ubicaron las estructuras narrativo-discursivas, los sistemas-mundo, los mapas conceptuales que el audiovisual ecuatoriano presenta respecto al fenómeno de la migración transnacional. Al analizar las estrategias de representación, constatamos que el cine y videos ecuatorianos actuales plantean una reflexión acerca del país, de la crisis social y moral que parece existir, del rol de los ecuatorianos en su sociedad, del sueño de tener una nueva Patria. Concluimos con el hecho de que el cine y el video nacional ponen en evidencia el papel del migrante como importante para promover la libre movilidad y la humanización de todo tipo de relaciones en la globalización.

Este paper revisa críticamente los debates que se han realizado sobre el video indígena y los conceptos fundamentales que se han desarrollado para pensar su complejidad en miras a construir la noción de “prácticas audiovisuales indígenas” por fuera de las meta-narrativas de emancipación, concepciones binarias y esencialismos étnicos. En una primera parte realiza un balance de la trayectoria de los debates sobre video indígena que se han realizado en las últimas décadas, plantea una breve revisión histórica de los principales acontecimiento que llevaron del movimiento en el contexto latinoamericano, revisa críticamente un conceptos como “medios indígenas”, “medios ciudadanos”, “video comunitario”, “estéticas enraizadas”, “imagen-política”, finalmente analiza los enfoques disciplinarios e interdisciplinarios desarrollados dentro de los estudios antropológicos, comunicativos y culturales. En una segunda parte propone hacer un análisis de los procesos de resistencia cultural en el Ecuador dentro de los cuales se inscribe el video indígena. Posteriormente se plantea un estudio de la obra y el pensamiento Alberto Muenala y Amaru Cholango, dos artistas indígenas precursores en el uso del video en Ecuador que han influenciado a las nuevas generaciones. En una tercera parte, se retoma los dos casos de estudio para plantear una serie de críticas a las conceptualizaciones establecidas sobre video indígena y finalmente se establecen un conjunto de elementos para la reconceptualización de las prácticas audiovisuales indígenas.

El fulgor de las redes sociales, Facebook y Twitter, en el año 2013 ha llevado a múltiples análisis investigativos en estudios de comunicación a nivel de maestría; debido, en más de una forma, a las victorias conseguidas en el plano de la interactividad comunicativa sustentadas en los principios de libertad humana, propios de la democracia. Al reconocer al sujeto como decidor, hablamos de la libertad para seleccionar, pertenecer, y participar, formando redes de afiliación y amistad basadas en las conexiones físicas. Así, busco conocer cuál es el grado de interactividad de las redes sociales en la difusión del video online. El inicio de la comunicación moderna impulsada por la prensa bajo un formato de oferta de información derivó en la aplicación de prácticas comunicacionales semejantes en el medio televisivo, pero cuando los medios iniciaron la producción de contenidos en la web, la lógica del emisor-canal-receptor se transformó hacia una bidireccionalidad múltiple. En este punto, a partir de un método cuantitativo, cuestiono el establecimiento de un diálogo con el usuario y entre usuarios generado por las publicaciones en Facebook y Twitter de cibermedios como TerraTV, CaracolTV y Ecuavisa, identificados por la distribución de contenido en formato de video on demand con carácter noticioso. Con el posicionamiento de internet en la esfera mediática la formación de las redes humanas físicas se virtualizaron, haciendo que cada uno de los nodos de la sociedad red ofrezca sus dosis de innovación al sistema, agregando valor e impulsando el capital social. Likes, fan pages, share, tuits, comentarios y clicks han llevado a todos los medios de comunicación a mantener conexiones con las redes sociales. En el caso de Ecuador, indago si Ecuavisa está empleando todas las potencialidades ofrecidas por la arquitectura de Facebook y Twitter para desarrollar una conversación entre sus fans. Con estudios de casos de 182 post y tuits producidos en Facebook y Twitter por los cibermedios seleccionados durante la elección del papa en marzo 2013, se compara el grado de adecuación a la interactividad en la difusión del video online, tras la implementación de un modelo de medición adaptado al test de dinamismo. CaracolTV se configura, entre los representantes de Brasil, Colombia y Ecuador, como el cibermedio con mayor grado de interactividad en una escala de 70 puntos.

A quantitative model of wheat root systems is developed that links the size and distribution of the root system to the capture of water and nitrogen (which are assumed to be evenly distributed with depth) during grain filling, and allows estimates of the economic consequences of this capture to be assessed. A particular feature of the model is its use of summarizing concepts, and reliance on only the minimum number of parameters (each with a clear biological meaning). The model is then used to provide an economic sensitivity analysis of possible target characteristics for manipulating root systems. These characteristics were: root distribution with depth, proportional dry matter partitioning to roots, resource capture coefficients, shoot dry weight at anthesis, specific root weight and water use efficiency. From the current estimates of parameters it is concluded that a larger investment by the crop in fine roots at depth in the soil, and less proliferation of roots in surface layers, would improve yields by accessing extra resources. The economic return on investment in roots for water capture was twice that of the same amount invested for nitrogen capture. (C) 2003 Annals of Botany Company.

Composites of wind speeds, equivalent potential temperature, mean sea level pressure, vertical velocity, and relative humidity have been produced for the 100 most intense extratropical cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere winter for the 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) and the high resolution global environment model (HiGEM). Features of conceptual models of cyclone structure—the warm conveyor belt, cold conveyor belt, and dry intrusion—have been identified in the composites from ERA-40 and compared to HiGEM. Such features can be identified in the composite fields despite the smoothing that occurs in the compositing process. The surface features and the three-dimensional structure of the cyclones in HiGEM compare very well with those from ERA-40. The warm conveyor belt is identified in the temperature and wind fields as a mass of warm air undergoing moist isentropic uplift and is very similar in ERA-40 and HiGEM. The rate of ascent is lower in HiGEM, associated with a shallower slope of the moist isentropes in the warm sector. There are also differences in the relative humidity fields in the warm conveyor belt. In ERA-40, the high values of relative humidity are strongly associated with the moist isentropic uplift, whereas in HiGEM these are not so strongly associated. The cold conveyor belt is identified as rearward flowing air that undercuts the warm conveyor belt and produces a low-level jet, and is very similar in HiGEM and ERA-40. The dry intrusion is identified in the 500-hPa vertical velocity and relative humidity. The structure of the dry intrusion compares well between HiGEM and ERA-40 but the descent is weaker in HiGEM because of weaker along-isentrope flow behind the composite cyclone. HiGEM’s ability to represent the key features of extratropical cyclone structure can give confidence in future predictions from this model.

The community pharmacy service medicines use review (MUR) was introduced in 2005 ‘to improve patient knowledge, concordance and use of medicines’ through a private patient–pharmacist consultation. The MUR presents a fundamental change in community pharmacy service provision. While traditionally pharmacists are dispensers of medicines and providers of medicines advice, and patients as recipients, the MUR considers pharmacists providing consultation-type activities and patients as active participants. The MUR facilitates a two-way discussion about medicines use. Traditional patient–pharmacist behaviours transform into a new set of behaviours involving the booking of appointments, consultation processes and form completion, and the physical environment of the patient–pharmacist interaction moves from the traditional setting of the dispensary and medicines counter to a private consultation room. Thus, the new service challenges traditional identities and behaviours of the patient and the pharmacist as well as the environment in which the interaction takes place. In 2008, the UK government concluded there is at present too much emphasis on the quantity of MURs rather than on their quality.[1] A number of plans to remedy the perceived imbalance included a suggestion to reward ‘health outcomes’ achieved, with calls for a more focussed and scientific approach to the evaluation of pharmacy services using outcomes research. Specifically, the UK government set out the main principal research areas for the evaluation of pharmacy services to include ‘patient and public perceptions and satisfaction’as well as ‘impact on care and outcomes’. A limited number of ‘patient satisfaction with pharmacy services’ type questionnaires are available, of varying quality, measuring dimensions relating to pharmacists’ technical competence, behavioural impressions and general satisfaction. For example, an often cited paper by Larson[2] uses two factors to measure satisfaction, namely ‘friendly explanation’ and ‘managing therapy’; the factors are highly interrelated and the questions somewhat awkwardly phrased, but more importantly, we believe the questionnaire excludes some specific domains unique to the MUR. By conducting patient interviews with recent MUR recipients, we have been working to identify relevant concepts and develop a conceptual framework to inform item development for a Patient Reported Outcome Measure questionnaire bespoke to the MUR. We note with interest the recent launch of a multidisciplinary audit template by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) in an attempt to review the effectiveness of MURs and improve their quality.[3] This template includes an MUR ‘patient survey’. We will discuss this ‘patient survey’ in light of our work and existing patient satisfaction with pharmacy questionnaires, outlining a new conceptual framework as a basis for measuring patient satisfaction with the MUR. Students may have difficulty in understanding some of the complex concepts which they have been taught in the general areas of science and engineering. Whilst practical work such as a laboratory based examination of the performance of structures has an important role in knowledge construction this does have some limitations. Blended learning supports different learning styles, hence further benefits knowledge building. This research involves an empirical study of how vodcasts (video-podcasts) can be used to enrich learning experience in the structural properties of materials laboratory of an undergraduate course. Students were given the opportunity of downloading and viewing the vodcasts on the theory before and after the experimental work. It is the choice of the students when (before or after, before and after) and how many times they would like to view the vodcasts. In blended learning, the combination of face-to-face teaching, vodcasts, printed materials, practical experiments, writing reports and instructors’ feedbacks benefits different learning styles of the learners. For the preparation of the practical, the students were informed about the availability of the vodcasts prior to the practical session. After the practical work, students submitted an individual laboratory report for the assessment of the structures laboratory. The data collection consisted of a questionnaire completed by the students, follow-up semi-structured interviews and the practical reports submitted by them for assessment. The results from the questionnaire were analysed quantitatively, whilst the data from the assessment reports were analysed qualitatively. The analysis shows that most of the students who have not fully grasped the theory after the practical, managed to gain the required knowledge by viewing the vodcasts. According to their feedbacks, the students felt that they have control over how to use the material and to view it as many times as they wish. Some students who have understood the theory may choose to view it once or not at all. Their understanding was demonstrated by their explanations in their reports, and was illustrated by the approach they took to explicate the results of their experimental work. The research findings are valuable to instructors who design, develop and deliver different types of blended learning, and are beneficial to learners who try different blended approaches. Recommendations were made on the role of the innovative application of vodcasts in the knowledge construction for structures laboratory and to guide future work in this area of research.

1. Suction sampling is a popular method for the collection of quantitative data on grassland invertebrate populations, although there have been no detailed studies into the effectiveness of the method. 2. We investigate the effect of effort (duration and number of suction samples) and sward height on the efficiency of suction sampling of grassland beetle, true bug, planthopper and spider Populations. We also compare Suction sampling with an absolute sampling method based on the destructive removal of turfs. 3. Sampling for durations of 16 seconds was sufficient to collect 90% of all individuals and species of grassland beetles, with less time required for the true bugs, spiders and planthoppers. The number of samples required to collect 90% of the species was more variable, although in general 55 sub-samples was sufficient for all groups, except the true bugs. Increasing sward height had a negative effect on the capture efficiency of suction sampling. 4. The assemblage structure of beetles, planthoppers and spiders was independent of the sampling method (suction or absolute) used. 5. Synthesis and applications. In contrast to other sampling methods used in grassland habitats (e.g. sweep netting or pitfall trapping), suction sampling is an effective quantitative tool for the measurement of invertebrate diversity and assemblage structure providing sward height is included as a covariate. The effective sampling of beetles, true bugs, planthoppers and spiders altogether requires a minimum sampling effort of 110 sub-samples of duration of 16 seconds. Such sampling intensities can be adjusted depending on the taxa sampled, and we provide information to minimize sampling problems associated with this versatile technique. Suction sampling should remain an important component in the toolbox of experimental techniques used during both experimental and management sampling regimes within agroecosystems, grasslands or other low-lying vegetation types.
