Undernutrition is a widespread problem in the intensive care and is associated with a worse clinical outcome. Enteral nutrition is the recommended nutritional support in ICU patients. However, enteral nutrition is frequently insufficient to cover protein-energy needs. The initiation of supplemental parenteral nutrition, when enteral nutrition is insufficient, could optimize the nutritional therapy. Such a combination could allow reducing morbidity, length of stay and recovery, as well as improving quality of life and health care costs. Prospective studies are currently underway to test this hypothesis.

This infectious disease can also affect man following contamination which usually occurs through eating berries. Prevention is the most effective way to avoid poisoning by mushrooms. In case of poisoning, the physician must try and determine the toxidrome. The key element is the length of time before symptoms develop. Treatment is always symptomatic, using activated charcoal.

Uncomplicated urinary tract infections are commonly encountered in primary care and frequently lead to empirical antibiotic prescriptions. The development of antibiotic resistance in the community explains treatment failures observed with commonly-prescribed drugs such as quinolones and co-trimoxazole. This article describes the epidemiology of antibiotic resistance among pathogens causing uncomplicated urinary tract infections and the consequences in terms of recommendations for empirical antibiotic therapy.
