Minerals, native metals, and intermetallides in bottom sediments of the Markov Deep, Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Bottom sediments of the Markov Deep contain rather large (>0.1 mm) grains of native minerals and intermetallides of noble and nonferrous metals that can be concentrated in placers. Intermetallides of Pt and Fe are likely to be derivates of the gold-hematite-barite assemblage that forms at late (low-depth) stages of hydrothermal massive sulfide formation. Mineral association of native forms of lead, tin, and copper with Zn-bearing copper may be related to hydrothermal transformation of ultrabasic and basic rocks accompanied by massive sulfide copper mineralization. The association of these minerals of native elements in bottom sediments can also serve as a prospecting guide for sulfide mineralization both at the Sierra Leone site, in particular, and on the seafloor, in general.

Construyendo nuevas miradas pedagógicas en pos de la accesibilidad académica en la universidad

Durante el primer cuatrimestre del año 2012 la asignatura Patrimonio Natural Regional de la carrera Tecnicatura de Empresas de Servicios Turísticos — Facultad de Turismo — Universidad Nacional del Comahue; contó con la presencia de un estudiante en situación de discapacidad (motora). A partir de la iniciativa de los docentes de la asignatura, se solicita apoyo institucional y se toma contacto con la Comisión Universitaria sobre Accesibilidad al Medio Físico y Social, para consensuar estrategias a implementar en la evaluación parcial del alumno en situación de discapacidad en relación al resto del curso. Este trabajo tiene por objetivos: reflexionar acerca de la evaluación parcial con estudiantes en situación de discapacidad y proponer cambios en la evaluación parcial de la asignatura Patrimonio Natural Regional en relación a estudiantes en situación de discapacidad motora. La metodología usada por el equipo de cátedra fue de un estudio de diseño para las asignaturas del área de concurso Recursos Naturales, contextualizado para el estudiante en situación de discapacidad con el asesoramiento de la comisión sobre accesibilidad y también de la comunicación con el alumno. Algunas conclusiones a las que se arribó tienen relación con los ejes 1. Necesidad de evaluaciones con nuevas estrategias pedagógicas contextuales particulares; 2.Necesidad de un acompañamiento institucional ante la presencia de estudiantes en situación de discapacidad en las aulas.

Fauna associated with Bathymodiolus azoricus mussel beds within hydrothermal fields of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Structure of assemblages associated with mussel aggregations of Bathymodiolus azoricus was investigated. Mussel beds were found on hydrothermal vent fields on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Menez Gwen, Lucky Strike, and Rainbow) at depths 850-2400 m. The community structure of the mussel bed assemblages varied between studied areas. Large number of species was unique to mussel beds of the Menez Gwen field; the most observed taxa were not specialized hydrothermal species. All other nonunique species were found within the Lucky Strike region. The lowest mussel assemblage structure evenness was observed in the shallowest Menez Gwen area (850 m depth). We assume that two types of mussel assemblages (nematode-dominated and copepod-dominated) exist within the Lucky Strike field. The assemblages of B. azoricus differ significantly from assemblages of B. thermophilus inhabiting Pacific hydrothermal vents.

Geophysical measurements on sediment cores from North Pond, Mid Atlantic Ridge

Die Porosität ist einer der wichtigsten gesteinsphysikalischen Parameter von Sedimenten. Daher werden in dieser Arbeit die Abhängigkeiten zwischen dem zentralen gesteinsphysikalischen Parameter Porosität und den Parametern Wärmeleitfähigkeit und spezifischer elektrischer Widerstand an Sedimenten von North Pond, eines Sedimentbeckens an der westlichen Flanke des Mittelatlantischen Rückens bei ca. 23°N, qualitativ und empirisch untersucht. Die Messung des spezifischen Widerstands wurde mittels eines miniaturisierten Wenner-Arrays mit einem Zentimeter Elektrodenabstand noch an Bord der FS Maria S. Merian auf der Reise MSM11/1 vom 10. Februar bis 13. März 2009 an Sedimentkernhälften durchgeführt, ebenso wie die Messung der Wärmeleitfähigkeit mit einer Nadelsonde. Die Messung der Gamma-Dichte an einem Multi Sensor Core Logger erfolgte im Rahmen dieser Arbeit und wurde wie die Messung der Porosität an Proben im Marum in Bremen durchgeführt. Die zugrundeliegende und zu untersuchende Beziehung zwischen spezifischem Widerstand und Porosität ist Archie's Law, die untersuchte Beziehung zwischen Wärmeleitfähigkeit und Porosität ist das Modell des geometrischen Mittels der Sedimentkomponenten. Die physikalische Beziehung zwischen der Porosität und den beiden Parametern spezifischer Widerstand und Wärmeleitfähigkeit konnte an den Sedimenten von North Pond bestätigt werden.

Contusotruncana contusa abundances and morphotypes in the cretaceous mid-latitude South Atlantic

Spatial and temporal patterns in test size and shape (test conicity and spiral roundness) and absolute abundance (accumulation rate) of the planktonic foraminifer Contusotruncana contusa were studied in the South Atlantic Ocean (DSDP sites 356, 516, 525 and 527) during an interval corresponding to the last 800 kyr of the Cretaceous. The variation in absolute abundance of C. contusa was characterised by alternating periods of high and low abundance; some of these periods were traceable across the entire mid-latitude South Atlantic Ocean. While the mean spiral roundness did not show any interpretable patterns, a sudden increase of the mean test size and mean test conicity occurred between 65.3 and 65.2 Ma (based on linear interpolation within the Cretaceous part of Subchron C29R) at all sites studied, indicating a poleward migration followed by rapid withdrawal of the low-latitude C. contusa morphotypes from the mid-latitude South Atlantic Ocean. We suggest that this event was caused by a short period of surface-water warming in the southern mid-latitudes corresponding to the brief high-latitude warming event and associated faunal migrations in the Boreal and Austral realms.
