Novel protic ionic liquids (PILs) based on a tributyl phosphonium cation have been synthesised and characterised, revealing that the phosphonium based ILs show high thermal stability, high ionic conductivity and facile proton reduction compared to the corresponding ammonium based ILs.

The development of new liquid and solid state electrolytes is paramount for the advancement of electrochemical devices such as lithium batteries and solar cells. Ionic liquids have shown great promise in both these applications. Here we demonstrate the use of phosphonium cations with small alkyl chain substituents, in combination with a range of different anions, to produce a variety of new halide free ionic liquids that are fluid, conductive and with sufficient thermal stability for a range of electrochemical applications. Walden plot analysis of the new phosphonium ionic liquids shows that these can be classed as "good" ionic liquids, with low degrees of ion pairing and/or aggregation, and the lithium deposition and stripping from one of these ionic liquids has been demonstrated. Furthermore, for the first time phosphonium cations have been used to form a range of organic ionic plastic crystals. These materials can show significant ionic conductivity in the solid state and thus are of great interest as potential solid-state electrolyte materials.

Dye-sensitized solar cells are an increasingly promising alternative to conventional silicon solar cells as a method of converting solar energy to electricity and thus providing an effectively inexhaustible energy source. However, the most efficient of these devices currently utilize liquid electrolytes, which suffer from the associated problems of leakage and evaporation. Hence, significant research is currently focused on the development of solid state alternatives. Here we report a new class of solid state electrolyte for these devices, organic ionic plastic crystal electrolytes, that allow relatively rapid diffusion of the redox couple through the matrix, which is critical to the cell performance. A range of different organic ionic plastic crystal materials, utilizing different cation and anion structures, have been investigated and the conductivities, diffusion rates and photovoltaic performance of the electrolytes are reported. The best material, utilizing the dicyanamide anion, achieves efficiencies of more than 5%.

In the present study we expand our analysis of using two contrasting organic solvent additives (toluene and THF) in an ionic liquid (IL)/Li NTf 2 electrolyte. Multinuclear Pulsed-Field Gradient (PFG) NMR, spin-lattice (T1) relaxation times and conductivity measurements over a wide temperature range are discussed in terms of transport properties and structuring of the liquid. The conductivity of both additive samples is enhanced the most at low temperatures, with THF slightly more effective than toluene. Both the anion and lithium self-diffusivity are enhanced in the same order by the additives (THF > toluene) while that of the pyrrolidinium cation is marginally enhanced. 1H spin-lattice relaxation times indicate a reasonable degree of structuring and anisotropic motion within all of the samples and both 19F and 7Li highlight the effectiveness of THF at influencing the lithium coordination within these systems.

Saturated aqueous solutions of various common salts were examined for their effect on aqueous aldol reactions catalysted by a highly active C2-symmetric diprolinamide organocatalyst developed in our laboratory. With respect to the aldol reaction between cyclohexanone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde, deionised water was always a superior medium to salt solutions though some correlation to increasing anion size and depression in enantiomeric excess could be observed. Additionally, the complete inhibition of catalyst activity observed when employing tap water could be alleviated by the inclusion of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) into the aqueous media prior to reaction initiation. Extension of these reaction conditions demonstrated that these ionic effects vary on a case-to-case basis depending on the ketone/aldehyde combination.

A series of highly-functionalized 2'-hydroxychalcones have been synthesized using a microwave-assisted Claisen-Schmidt condensation. Conversion of these 2'-hydroxychalcones to their corresponding flavanones was then performed utilizing protic ionic liquids (pIL) and microwave irradiation. This methodology drastically reduces reaction time to 15 minutes compared to typical thermal methods (24 hrs) and is tolerant to a broad range of functional groups. Several chalcones reported bear four and five substituents - a degree of substitution rarely reported in the literature.

We have shown that protic ionic liquids, pILs, are effective coagulation solvents for the regenerated of silk fibroin, RSF. We show that the choice of pIL has a dramatic effect on the composition of the RSF. Additionally the use of pILs as the coagulator eliminates the need for volatile organic solvents in silk processing.
