Microporous silica gel has been prepared by the sol-gel method utilizing the hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The gel has been doped with the luminescent ternary europium complex Eu(TTA)(3)(.)phen: where HTTA=1-(2-thenoyl)-3,3,3-trifluoracetone and phen=1,10-phenanthroline. By contrast to the weak f-f electron absorption bands of Eu3+, the complex organic ligand exhibits intense near ultraviolet absorption. Energy transfer from the ligand to Eu3+ enables the production of efficient, sharp visible luminescence from this material. Utilizing the polymerization of methyl methacrylate, the inorganic/polymer hybrid material containing Eu(TTA)(3)(.)phen has also been obtained. SEM micrographs show uniformly dispersed particles in the nanometre range. The characteristic luminescence spectral features of europium ions are present in the emission spectra of the hybrid material doped with Eu(TTA)(3)(.)phen.

The europium complex, Eu(TTA)(3)phen (TTA = thenoyltrifluoroacetone, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was successfully doped into organically modified silicate (ormosil) matrix-SiO2/(VTMOS+PMMA) (VTMOS = vinyltrimethoxysilane, PMMA = polymethylmethacrylate) via sol-gel process, and the luminescence properties of the resultant ormosil composite phosphors [ormosil: Eu(TTA)(3)phen were investigated compared with those of the pure Eu(TTA)(3)phen complex powder. The ormosil composite materials incorporated with Eu(TTA)(3)phen show the characteristic red emission of Eu3+ ion. The Eu3+ possesses fewer emission lines and longer lifetime in the hybrid phosphor than in the pure Eu(TTA)(3)phen complex. This has been explained from the viewpoint of the surrounding environment where the Eu3+ ion lies. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The IR spectrum and B-11 and Al-27 MAS NMR spectra of Al18B4O33 are presented and discussed in relation to the possible existence of boron atoms substituting for aluminum atoms. The IR spectrum shows that the strong vibrations of the BO3 groups are present in the 1 500 similar to1 200 cm(-1) region, and very weak bands of BO4 units art present in the region from 1 000 to 1 100 cm(-1). B-11 MAS NMR spectrum indicates that the strong signal for BOB units appears in the region from delta +5 to delta +20, and the very weak signal for BO4 units is at about delta -1, while Al-27 MAS NMR spectrum shows five peaks at about delta +62, +42.1, +14, -4.7 and -6.4, originating from AlO4, AlO4, AlO5, AlO6 and AlO6, respectively, These results reveal that there are minor BO4 units in Al18B4O33, indicating that a small amount of B atoms substitute for Al atoms in the 4-fold coordination.

Rare earth complex Eu(phen)(2)Cl-3 was introduced into a SiO2-PEG-400 hybrid material by a sol-ger method. The result indicated that Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) could associate with Eu3+ and change the surroundings of Eu3+ in the hybrid material, greatly improving the decay time. Transparent SiO2-PEG400 hybrid doped with a very small amount of Eu(phen)(2)Cl-3 has better mechanical properties and can retain excellent luminescence properties of the rare earth complex. CaY1-xBO4: xEu was synthesied by solid state reaction method, and the displacement and luminescence of the Eu3+ in CaYBO4 host were studied. Two luminescent centers could be observed at certain Eu3+-concentration, indicating that the Eu3+ occupies two different crystallographic sites. This result shows that the Eu3+ occupies two different Y3+ sites in CaYBO4. The investigation on Eu-O charge transfer bands indicates that the larger distortion or the lower symmetry of Eu3+ site is,the shorter wavelength of the Eu-O charge transfer band is. When the Eu3+-concentration is high (x > 0.10), Eu3+ occupies the sites of Ca2+ and is reduced to Eu2+.

The nature of the emission centers and the valence change of Eu2+ in KCaF3:Eu2+ depends strongly on preparation conditions. Experimental results show that there are two different d-->f emission bands, located at 425 and 510 nm, respectively. Their origin, relationship, and the effect of doping concentration on them are discussed. A Eu2+-Eu3+ valence change process is proposed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The efficient synthesis of 5-(5-bromovaleramido)-1,10-phenanthroline, 5-(6-bromohexanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline, and 5-(11-bromoundecanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline are described, which reacted with cis-Ru(bpy)(2)Cl-2. 2H(2)O and sodium hexafluorophosphate to form Ru(bpy)(2)[phen-NHCO(CH2)(n)Br](PF6)(2) (n = 4, 5 or 10; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The intricate H-1 NMR spectra at low field of these complexes were completely assigned in virtue of H-1-H-1 COSY technique. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study electrochemical behaviours of these complexes, and their luminescent properties were investigated with fluorescent spectra.

Plant extracellular calmodulin (CaM) has been purified from cauliflower and identified with NAD kinase(NADK) activation and inhibition effect of CaM antagonist W7, Tb-3.1 fluorescence titration showed that extracellular CaM contained four metal-binding sites, The excitation spectrum and emission specturm indicated that extracellular CaM contained one tyrosine residue which could transfer energy to bound Tb3+. Based on Forster type nonradiative energy transfer theory, the distances of Tyr-->sites III, IV have been determined, these are 1. 104 nm(Tyr --> III, site) and 1. 056 nm(Tyr --> N, site). By studing the effect of CaM antagonist W7 and CaM antibody on Tb3+-sensitized fluorescence, it was found that the binding sites of W7 and antibody were located on the c-terminal part of plant extracellular CaM which contains domain III and domain IV.

Infrared emission at 1.54 mu m excited optically and electrically from an erbium organic compound tris(acetylacetonato)(1,10-phenanthroline) erbium [Er(acac)(3)(phen)] is observed. The rare-earth complex is dispersed into a polymer matrix of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) to fabricate an electroluminescent (EL) device with an ITO/PVK:Er(acac)(3)(phen)/Al:Li/Ag structure, where ITO represents indium-tin-oxide-coated glass. The device shows infrared EL emission at 1.54 mu m, which suggests a simple and cheap method to obtain a light source for 1.54-mu m-wavelength devices in optical communications. The BaMA(10)O(17) (M = Be, Mg, Ca, Zn, Cd, Mn, Co, Li) system has been synthesized by solid state method and characterized by XRD. The results show that when M is Mg, Zn, Mn, Co, Li, there exists the structure of beta-Al2O3 for BaMAl10O17 system, and when M indicates Cd, beta-Al2O3 structure is formed accompanying alpha-Al2O3 phase, and when M represents Be and Ca, beta-Al2O3 structure cannot be formed. This demonstrates that the condition forming beta-Al2O3 structure compounds for the system BaMAl10O17 is 0.05nm < R-M < 0.09nm (R-M represents the radius of M). The thought that if a M ion can form a stable spinel structure there exsits a corresponding magnetoplumbite and beta-alumina structure is proposed for BaMAl10O17 system according to the experimental results. When M is Li, Be, Zn, Eu2+ activator produces an emission of nearly 450 nm with half height width about 50 nm, when M is Mn, there are simultaneously the emissions of Eu2+ and Mn2+ and the excitation energy of Eu2+ can transfer to Mn2+ in the host, when M is Cd, Eu2+ displays a double-emission band, which can be explained by the Jahn-Teller's effect. It is possible for the system BaMAl10O17 with M being Li, Be, Zn to become blue-emitting component in three colour lamp through further study.

Detailed circular dichroism(CD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) studies have been carried out to monitor thermal unfolding of horseradish peroxidase isoenzyme C(HRP) inhibited by CN(HRP-CN). The results suggest that HRP-CN is quite different from native HRP with different spin states of Fe of heme and different coordinated states. Cyanide becomes the sixth ligand of Fe(I) of heme and the hydrogen-binding network is destroyed partly at the same time, which cause the drastic decrease of thermal stability of HRP. The FTIR and Soret-CD spectra analysis demonstrate that during the heating process there is an intermediate state(I') which has both partly destroyed secondary and tertiary structures of native HRP, then it is the appearance of protein aggregation state(A) after fully unfolding. The unfolding pathway thus can be shown as follows: I -->I'-->U -->A.

Binary and ternary europium complexes with dibenzplymethane (DBM) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) were synthesized and doped into a sol-gel luminescence thin film and polyvinylbutyral (PVB) film. The luminescent spectra and lifetime of the films were measured. The final results showed that Eu(III) characteristic emission bands were observed in the spectra of all the doped films. Longer lifetimes and a higher photo-stability were observed in SiO2:Eu(III) complex luminescent thin films than in PVB:Eu(III) complex films that contained a corresponding amount of pure complexes. Heat-stability tests showed that SiO2:Eu(III) complex thin films still showed certain fluorescence after heat-treatment at a temperature of 130 degreesC, while little fluorescence could be observed in PVB:Eu(III) complex films under a UV lamp. The adsorption and oxidation of yeast RNA and herring sperm DNA (HS DNA) at glass carbon (GC) electrode are studied by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry. Two oxidation peaks of yeast RNA are obtained by DPV, whose peak potentials shift negatively with increasing pH. The peak currents decrease gradually in successive scans and no corresponding reduction peaks occur, thus indicating that the oxidation process of yeast RNA is completely irreversible. The IR bands in the 1200-1800 cm-l range, attributed to the stretching and ring vibrations of nucleic acid bases, show the main spectral changes when the potential is shifted positively, which gives evidence that the oxidation process takes place in the base residues. The oxidation process of HS DNA is similar to that of yeast RNA. The results both from DPV and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry confirm that the guanine and adenine residues can be oxidized at the electrode surface, which is consistent with the oxidation mechanism of nucleic acids proposed previously. Binary complexes of europium and terbium with N-propyl-4-carboxyphthalimide (NP) were prepared and characterized. The luminescence behaviors of the lanthanide complexes as well as their doped silica-based composites were investigated by fluorescence spectra. The results indicated that the lanthanide complexes showed fewer emission lines and slightly lower intensities in silica matrix than that of corresponding pure complexes. The lifetimes of the lanthanide complexes became longer when they were incorporated in silica matrix. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
