The decline of the Black-eared Miner Manorina melanotis has been caused primarily by habitat degradation and vegetation clearance. To better direct conservation actions for this species there was a need to assess habitat requirements on a regional-scale and to estimate the population size using quantitative methods. We used vegetation mapping and the current distribution of the Black-eared Miner to determine regional-scale habitat requirements. These findings were combined with the results of distance sampling to provide population estimates. The species is restricted to large tracts of intact mallee in the Murray Mallee of southeastern Australia that have not been burnt for at least 45 years. The density· of Black-eared Miners is highest in areas that are dominated by mallee- Triodia associations and have not been intensively grazed. The Bookmark Biosphere Reserve supports an estimated 501 (270-927, 95% CI) colonies, containing 3758 (2026-6954) phenotypically pure Black-eared Miners, 2255 (1 215-4170) hybrids and small numbers of Yellow-throated Miners Manorina flavigula. However, the effective population size is considerably smaller (390 Black-eared Miners '(21 0-726) and 234 hybrids (126-433)), due to a skewed adult sex ratio (1 female: 1.81 males) and complex social organization. A smaller population also persists in the Murray Sunset National Park containing 53 (32-85) Black-eared Miner/hybrid colonies. Both populations face a high risk of extinction from large-scale wildfire. The endangered status of the species under IUCN criteria remains warranted.

This paper examines the relationship between adjacent non-crop vegetation and rodent (Rattus rattus) damage in Australian macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia) orchard systems. Orchards adjacent to structurally diverse, non-crop vegetation dominated by woody weeds exhibited significantly higher damage when compared to orchards adjacent to managed grasslands. This relationship formed the basis for a rodent damage reduction strategy utilising habitat manipulation. Structurally diverse, non-crop habitats were modified to grasslands leading to a reduction in rodent damage of 65%. This strategy was cost-effective and has the potential to be long-term with minimal effort needed to maintain sites in a modified state. Habitat manipulation is a process whereby the resource load in a system is reduced and hence rodent densities cannot reach levels where they cause significant crop damage. This paper provides empirical evidence to support habitat manipulation as a practical, cost-effective control strategy for rodent pests.

One of the most important objectives of cold metal forming research is to develop techniques that enable better manufacturing efficiencies. Within this monitoring of tooling condition is vital to providing high quality manufacturing. The objective of this research is to determine the signature derived from Acoustic Emission (AE) sensors, in order to establish the current condition of a machine tool, as applied to bolt-making. From here we aim to develop and implement an on-line condition monitoring tool for the cold forming process. A review of the literature has shown that much research into AE has been successfully applied in metal cutting operations; such as milling, drilling and turning, but little research has been done related to metal forming. This appears to be due to the complexity of obtaining consistent signals using Acoustic Emission systems, because the presence of noise in many forms. This paper will detail many of the AE signals acquired and analysed through our research. The extensive results indicate this form of condition monitoring is not suitable for metal forming in its current configuration. Further tests are proposed to enable such research to move forward, so a condition monitoring system can be established.

In this paper, electromagnetic emission at the frequency range of 30MHz to 300MHz is used to detect physical defects on the 22kV outdoor zinc-oxide (ZnO) surge arresters. Different weather conditions combining with artificially created pollution were produced in a laboratory environment and measurements were recorded over a fixed period of time. Pollution due to fine dust particles has been created according to IEC standard under both wet and dry conditions. The aim is to detect the defects (bushing damage) when the surge arrester is subjected to various weather and surface condition. The collected electromagnetic signals were sampled and analyzed using analysis tools such as the autocorrelation coefficient and Wigner-Ville distribution. The results from the present paper indicate that electromagnetic radiation from the defects on surge arrester combining with the adequate analysis tools can be used as a valuable diagnostic tool for power system operator.

The global trend toward more intensive forms of agriculture is changing the nature of matrix habitat in agricultural areas. Removal of components of matrix habitat can affect native biota at the paddock and the landscape scale, particularly where intensification occurs over large areas. We identify the loss of paddock trees due to the proliferation of centre pivot irrigation in dryland farming areas as a potentially serious threat to the remnant biota of these areas. We used a region of south-eastern Australia as a case study to quantify land use change from grazing and dryland cropping to centre pivot irrigation over a 23-year period. We also estimated rates of paddock tree loss in 5 representative landscapes within the region over the same period. The total area affected by centre pivots increased from 0 ha in 1980 to nearly 9000 ha by 2005. Pivots were more likely to be established in areas which had originally been plains savannah and woodlands containing buloke (Allocasuarina luehmannii), a food source for an endangered bird. On average, 42% of paddock buloke trees present in 1982 were lost by 2005. In the two landscapes containing several centre pivots, the loss was 54% and 70%. This accelerated loss of important components of matrix habitat is likely to result in species declines and local extinctions. We recommend that measures to alleviate the likely negative impacts of matrix habitat loss on native biota be considered as part of regional planning strategies.

This paper contributes to a better understanding of geophysical characteristics and benthic communities in the Hopkins site in Victoria, Australia. An automated decision tree classification system was used to classify substrata and dominant biota communities. Geophysical sampling and underwater video data collected in this study reveals a complex bathymetry and biological structure which complements the limited information of benthic marine ecosystems in coastal waters of Victoria. The technique of combining derivative products from the backscatter and the bathymetry datasets was found to improve separability for broad biota and substrata categories over the use of either of these datasets alone.

A readily evaluated condition for migration dynamic recrystallization is developed. It is based on the postulate that “the distance traversed by the boundary of a hypothetical growing grain in the time taken for the attainment of a recovery steady state must exceed the size of a critical nucleus”. A method for estimating the boundary mobility based on the kinetics of static recrystallization is also developed to facilitate evaluation of the condition. The derivation focuses first on developing an upper limit for the dynamically recrystallized grain size. This upper limit is only slightly higher than experimental values. The critical condition also agrees well with a limited set of experimental data. These data include the occurrence (and, in two cases, suppression) of dynamic recrystallization in Cu, Ni, Mg, α-Fe, γ-Fe and Al.

This paper proposes a neural network model using genetic algorithm for a model for the prediction of the damage condition of existing light structures founded in expansive soils in Victoria, Australia. It also accounts for both individual effects and interactive effects of the damage factors influencing the deterioration of light structures. A Neural Network Model was chosen because it can deal with 'noisy' data while a Genetic Algorithm was chosen because it does not get `trapped' in local optimum like other gradient descent methods. The results obtained were promising and indicate that a Neural Network Model trained using a Genetic Algorithm has the ability to develop an interactive relationship and a Predicted Damage Conditions Model.

The Rufous Bristlebird (Dasyornis broadbenti) is a sedentary, ground-dwelling passerine of southern Australia, which is listed as nationally vulnerable, and as near-threatened (lower risk) in Victoria. The species inhabits a variety of vegetation, including shrub thickets in coastal gullies to heathlands on limestone cliffs. This study aimed to assess the size, distribution and habitat use of a population of the subspecies D. b.  broadbenti at Portland in south-western Victoria. Monthly surveys (2002–03) were conducted on foot for 1 h after official sunrise and 1 h before official sunset, and presence of Bristlebirds recorded using vocalisations and sightings. Observations outside of the survey times were also recorded to estimate the size of territories and core area of occupancy. To quantify habitat preferences, vegetation composition and structure were measured in areas where Bristlebirds were present, as well as surrounding areas where they were not detected. The population in the survey areas was estimated at between 70 and 86 individuals in the 170-ha survey area. The estimated size of territories of eight selected pairs of Bristlebirds ranged from 0.5 to 3 ha, with core areas of occupancy ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 ha. During the nesting season (August November) Bristlebirds were detected at greater frequencies in the core area of occupancy within each territory. Significant associations were found between the presence of Bristlebirds and floristic associations dominated by the native environmental weeds Acacia sophorae and Leptospermum laevigatum. Bristlebird presence was significantly positively correlated with increasing vegetation density in the mid-canopy level (80–120 cm) indicating that vegetation structure is a key factor in habitat use.

Most studies of habitat use by small mammals rely on data from trapping grids. Such studies pertain to habitat use by individuals, which may not reflect population-level requirements. To meet the challenge of landscape change, it is important to understand habitat use by populations across large geographic areas. We surveyed small mammals in 48 forest remnants across a 300 km2 study area, to investigate the influence of vegetation heterogeneity on regional distributions. Information-theoretic techniques were used to evaluate models of vegetation associations. Richness of native mammals was influenced by vegetation condition: disturbed sites supported fewer species. Models for individual species showed the agile antechinus, Antechinus agilis, to prefer structurally diverse forest vegetation, the long-nosed potoroo, Potorous tridactylus, to favour mesic shrub communities, the bush rat, Rattus fuscipes, to prefer complex low cover regardless of composition, the swamp rat, Rattus lutreolus, to favour reduced canopy cover, and the house mouse, Mus domesticus, to prefer disturbed vegetation. To satisfy the needs of all native species, a mosaic of natural vegetation is required. Degradation and simplification of forest vegetation have detrimental consequences. These results highlight the need to consider habitat quality, together with more traditional biogeographic variables, when investigating factors influencing patch occupancy by native fauna in modified landscapes.

The squirrel glider (Petaurus norfolcensis) occurs in forests and woodlands in eastern Australia. In Victoria it is now largely restricted to small, fragmented areas and is considered endangered. In this study, the time-budget, feeding behaviour and related habitat use of the squirrel glider were investigated in a linear remnant of roadside vegetation near Euroa, Victoria. Timed observations of three males and three females, fitted with radio-collars, were made in each of four seasons. Gliders were observed for a total of 53.2 h, during which they devoted 72% of time to foraging activities. Grooming accounted for 16% of observation time. Exudates associated with homopterous insects were the primary food items consumed throughout the year. Arthropods, nectar and pollen, and Acacia gum formed the remainder of the diet. The proportion of time devoted to harvesting these food items showed marked seasonal variation. The primary dependence on homopterous insect exudates in this study area contrasts with other investigations at sites of greater floristic diversity where nectar and pollen were the most important dietary resources. This highlights the need to obtain ecological information from the range of habitats occupied by a species. Large trees are a vital habitat component of remnant linear vegetation in this study area, providing gliders with critical foraging resources. Retention of such trees is essential for the longevity of glider populations.

We generalize an alignment condition of the Weyl tensor given by Barnes and Rowlingson. The alignment condition is then applied to Petrov type D perfect fluid spacetimes. In particular, purely magnetic, Petrov type D, shear-free perfect fluids are shown to be locally rotationally symmetric.
