The development of the Marcellus Shale gas play in Pennsylvania and the northeastern United States has resulted in significant amounts of water and wastes transported by truck over roadways. This study used geographic information systems (GIS) to quantify truck travel distances via both the preferred routes (minimum distance while also favoring higher-order roads) as well as, where available, the likely actual distances for freshwater and waste transport between pertinent locations (e. g., gas wells, treatment facilities, freshwater sources). Results show that truck travel distances in the Susquehanna River Basin are greater than those used in prior life-cycle assessments of tight shale gas. When compared to likely actual transport distances, if policies were instituted to constrain truck travel to the closest destination and higher-order roads, transport mileage reductions of 40-80% could be realized. Using reasonable assumptions of current practices, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with water and waste hauling were calculated to be 70-157 MT CO2 eq per gas well. Furthermore, empty so-called backhaul trips, such as to freshwater withdrawal sites or returning from deep well injection sites, were found to increase emissions by an additional 30%, underscoring the importance of including return trips in the analysis. The results should inform future life-cycle assessments of tight shale gases in managed watersheds and help local and regional governments plan for impacts of transportation on local infrastructure. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Visual neglect is a frequent disability in stroke and adversely affects mobility, discharge destination, and length of hospital stay. It is assumed that its severity is enhanced by a released interhemispheric inhibition from the unaffected toward the affected hemisphere. Continuous theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TBS) is a new inhibitory brain stimulation protocol which has the potential to induce behavioral effects outlasting stimulation. We aimed to test whether parietal TBS over the unaffected hemisphere can induce a long-lasting improvement of visual neglect by reducing the interhemispheric inhibition. METHODS: Eleven patients with left-sided visual neglect attributable to right hemispheric stroke were tested in a visual perception task. To evaluate the specificity of the TBS effect, 3 conditions were tested: 2 TBS trains over the left contralesional posterior parietal cortex, 2 trains of sham stimulation over the contralesional posterior parietal cortex, and a control condition without any intervention. To evaluate the lifetime of repeated trains of TBS in 1 session, 4 trains were applied over the contralesional posterior parietal cortex. RESULTS: Two TBS trains significantly increased the number of perceived left visual targets for up to 8 hours as compared to baseline. No significant improvement was found with sham stimulation or in the control condition without any intervention. The application of 4 TBS trains significantly increased the number of perceived left targets up to 32 hours. CONCLUSIONS: The new approach of repeating TBS at the same day may be promising for therapy of neglect.

Mit der Durchführung von Sportevents werden vielfältige Hoffnungen verbunden. Unter anderem können Events Informationen über eine Destination transportieren und dadurch das zukünftige Verhalten von relevanten Zielgruppen wie Touristen oder Investoren beeinflussen. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht anhand von drei Marathonevents die Wechselwirkung zwischen Event und Destination sowie die Strategien zur Optimierung der positiven Effekte. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Passung der Eventthematik zu den Destinationsschwerpunkten sowie der frühzeitige Einbezug aller relevanten Stake Holder Schlüsselrollen spielen. Alle drei betrachteten Marathonevents nehmen im Standortmarketing der jeweiligen Destination keine zentrale Rolle ein, sondern leisten in moderatem Umfang einen Beitrag zum Destination Branding.

Recent outstanding clinical advances with new mechanical circulatory systems have led to additional strategies in the treatment of end-stage heart failure. Heart transplantation can be postponed and for certain patients even replaced by smaller implantable left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). Mechanical support of the failing left ventricle enables appropriate haemodynamic stabilization and recovery of secondary organ failure, often seen in these severely ill patients. These new devices may be of great help to bridge patients until a suitable cardiac allograft is available but are also discussed as definitive treatment for patients who do not qualify for transplantation. Main indications for LVAD implantation are bridge to recovery, bridge to transplantation or destination therapy. An LVAD may be an important tool for patients with an expected prolonged period on the waiting list, for instance those with blood group O or B, with high or low body weight and those with potentially reversible secondary organ failure and pulmonary artery hypertension. However, LVAD implantation means an additional heart operation with inherent perioperative risks and complications during the waiting period. Finally, cardiac transplantation in patients with prior implantation of an LVAD represents a surgical challenge. The care of patients after the implantation of miniaturized LVADs, such as the HeartWare® system, seems to be easier than following pulsatile devices. The explantation of such devices at the time of transplantation is technically more comfortable than after HeartMate II implantation.

Großstädte sind derzeit wieder zu Orten sozialer Bewegungen geworden. Mit Slogans wie „oben bleiben“ (Stuttgart) oder „Recht auf Stadt“ (Hamburg) artikuliert sich heute auf unterschiedliche Weise ein Protest, der auf sich verändernde urbane Realitäten Bezug nimmt und dabei eine breite mediale Resonanz findet. Gleichwohl werden oft nur bestimmte Formen der Organisation und des Protests als legitime soziale Bewegungen anerkannt. Andere werden als NIMBY, Not-in-my-backyard-Intitiativen, definiert und diskreditiert oder als Riots entpolitisiert. Es ist keineswegs ausgemacht, welche Initiativen und Bewegungen sich für ein „Recht auf Stadt“ im Sinne Lefebvres und damit für Aneignung und Umverteilung einsetzen, indem sie gegen die verbreitete stadtpolitische Konzentration auf Wettbewerb und Wachstum agieren, und welche möglicherweise gerade über ihr bürgerschaftliches Engagement ein (partizipativer) Teil einer neoliberalen Governance werden.

Greedy routing can be used in mobile ad-hoc networks as geographic routing protocol. This paper proposes to use greedy routing also in overlay networks by positioning overlay nodes into a multi-dimensional Euclidean space. Greedy routing can only be applied when a routing decision makes progress towards the final destination. Our proposed overlay network is built such that there will be always progress at each forwarding node. This is achieved by constructing at each node a so-called nearest neighbor convex set (NNCS). NNCSs can be used for various applications such as multicast routing, service discovery and Quality-of-Service routing. NNCS has been compared with Pastry, another topology-aware overlay network. NNCS has superior relative path stretches indicating the optimality of a path.

Despite the widespread interest in the topic and a vast international literature, very little is known about the development of intergenerational mobility in Switzerland. Based on a new harmonized database for Switzerland (comprising various surveys such as different waves of the ISSP, EVS, and the ESS), we provide a systematic account of changes in the link between social origin and destination over time (covering birth cohorts from around 1935 to 1980). We analyze effects of parental education and class on own educational achievement and social class for both men and women, using a refined variant of the methodological approach proposed by Jann and Combet (2012). The approach is based on the concept of proportional reduction of error (PRE) and features a number of advantages over more traditional approaches. For example, it provides smooth estimates of changes in social mobility that have a clear interpretation and it can easily incorporate control variables and multiple dimensions of parental characteristics. To evaluate the validity of our approach, we employ the oft-used log-multiplicative layer effect (a.k.a Unidiff) model (Xie 1992, Erikson and Goldthorpe 1992) as a benchmark. Results indicate that our approach performs well and produces qualitatively similar findings as Xie's model. For both men and women, effects of social origin initially decreased, but then, towards the end of the observation period, increased again. This u-shaped pattern, which can be observed with respect to both education and class, appears to be more pronounced for women than for men.
