This paper reports experiments involving the electrochemical combustion of humic acid (HA) and removal of algae from pond water. An electrochemical flow reactor with a boron-doped diamond film anode was used and constant current experiments were conducted in batch recirculation mode. The mass transfer characteristics of the electrochemical device were determined by voltammetric experiments in the potential region of water stability, followed by a controlled current experiment in the potential region of oxygen evolution. The average mass transfer coefficient was 5.2 x 10(-5) m s(-1). The pond water was then processed to remove HA and algae in the conditions in which the reaction combustion occurred under mass transfer control. To this end, the mass transfer coefficient was used to estimate the initial limiting current density applied in the electrolytic experiments. As expected, all the parameters analyzed here-solution absorbance at 270 nm, total phenol concentration and total organic carbon concentration-decayed according to first-order kinetics. Since the diamond film anode successfully incinerated organic matter, the electrochemical system proved to be predictable and programmable.

This work presents a cyclic voltammetry study of the polyaniline/polyluminol copolymer on platinum electrodes. The results show that under determined conditions it is possible to obtain the copolymer deposited on a metallic surface. The luminol presence clearly affects the oxidation of aniline in the nucleation process and, additionally, changes the cyclic voltammetric characteristics of the obtained material. In this aspect, the copolymer presents hybrid characteristics when compared to the polyaniline and polyluminol separately obtained and seems to present intermediary conductivity.

The development and application of a functionalized carbon nanotubes paste electrode (CNPE) modified with crosslinked chitosan for determination of Cu(II) in industrial wastewater, natural water and human urine samples by linear scan anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV) are described. Different electrodes were constructed using chitosan and chitosan crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (CTS-GA) and epichlorohydrin (CTS-ECH). The best voltammetric response for Cu(II) was obtained with a paste composition of 65% (m/m) of functionalized carbon nanotubes, 15% (m/m) of CTS-ECH, and 20% (m/m) of mineral oil using a solution of 0.05 mol L(-1) KNO(3) with pH adjusted to 2.25 with HNO(3), an accumulation potential of 0.3V vs. Ag/AgCl (3.0 mol L(-1) KCl) for 300 s and a scan rate of 100 mV s(-1). Under these optimal experimental conditions, the voltammetric response was linearly dependent on the Cu(II) concentration in the range from 7.90 x 10(-8) to 1.60 x 10(-5) mol L(-1) with a detection limit of 1.00 x 10(-8) mol L(-1). The samples analyses were evaluated using the proposed sensor and a good recovery of Cu(II) was obtained with results in the range from 98.0% to 104%. The analysis of industrial wastewater, natural water and human urine samples obtained using the proposed CNPE modified with CTS-ECH electrode and those obtained using a comparative method are in agreement at the 95% confidence level. Glossoscolex paulistus hemoglobin (HbGp) was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS), optical absorption spectroscopy (UV-VIS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). At pH 7.0, cyanomet-HbGp is very stable, no oligomeric dissociation is observed, while denaturation occurs at 56 degrees C, 4 degrees C higher as compared to oxy-HbGp. The oligomeric dissociation of HbGp occurs simultaneously with some protein aggregation. Kinetic studies for oxy-HbGp using UV-VIS and DES allowed to obtain activation energy (E(a)) values of 278-262 kJ/mol (DES) and 333 kJ/mol (UV-VIS). Complimentary DSC studies indicate that the denaturation is irreversible, giving endotherms strongly dependent upon the heating scan rates, suggesting a kinetically controlled process. Dependence on protein concentration suggests that the two components in the endotherms are due to oligomeric dissociation effect upon denaturation. Activation energies are in the range 200-560 kJ/mol. The mid-point transition temperatures were in the range 50-65 degrees C. Cyanomet-HbGp shows higher mid-point temperatures as well as activation energies, consistent with its higher stability. DSC data are reported for the first time for an extracellular hemoglobin. This study presents the preparation, characterization and application of copper octa(3-aminopropyl)octasilsesquioxane following its subsequent reaction with azide ions (ASCA). The precursor (AC) and the novel compound (ASCA) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analyses and voltammetric technique. The cyclic voltammogram of the modified graphite paste electrode with ASCA (GPE-ASCA), showed one redox couple with formal potential (E(1/2)(ox)) = 0.30 V and an irreversible process at 1.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl; NaCl 1.0 M; v = 20 mV s(-1)). The material is very sensitive to nitrite concentrations. The modified graphite paste electrode (GPE-ASCA) gives a linear range from 1.0 x 10(-4) to 4.0 x 10(-3) mol L(-1) for the determination of nitrite, with a detection limit of 2.1 x 10(-4) mol L(-1) and the amperometric sensitivity of 8.04 mA/mol L(-1). Instead of a time-invariant voltammetric profile, many electrochemical systems display a cycle-dependent current-potential response. This phenomenon has been referred to as complex voltammetric response and it has been observed during the electro-oxidation of several molecules such as methanol, ethanol, propanol and hydrogen. There are currently two explanations for the surface mechanism underlying this behavior. In one scenario, the complex voltammogram would result from the specific kinetic pathway taken during the forward sweep. In the other explanation, the phenomenon is discussed in terms of the interplay among the surface roughening and subsequent relaxation, and the ohmic drop coupled to a negative differential resistance. We report in this paper a nanogravimetric investigation of the complex voltammetric response in the electro-oxidation of methanol on platinum electrode in both acidic and alkaline media. Different periodic patterns composed of intercalated small and large hysteresis cycles were observed as a function of the applied voltage and the series resistance between the working electrode and the potentiostat. Independently, nanogravimetric results indicated no detectable difference in the delta-frequency versus voltage profile between small and large hysteresis cycles. These findings were interpreted as experimental evidence of the secondary, if any, role played by the very electrochemical reaction on the emergence of complex voltammetric response. Platinum stepped surfaces vicinal to the (1 1 0) crystallographic pole have been investigated voltammetrically in 0.1 M HClO(4) and 0.1 M H(2)SO(4) solutions. Changes in the voltammetric profile with the step density suggest the existence of two types of surface sites, that has been ascribed to linear and bidimensional domains. This result indicates the existence of important restructuring processes that separate the real surface distribution from the nominal one. The electronic properties of the surfaces have been characterized with the CO charge displacement method and the potential of zero total charge has been calculated as a function of the step density. A simple and highly selective electrochemical method was developed for the single or simultaneous determination of paracetamol (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol, acetaminophen) and caffeine (3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione) in aqueous media (acetate buffer, pH 4.5) on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode using square wave voltammetry (SWV) or differential Pulse voltammetry (DPV). Using DPV with the cathodically pre-treated BDD electrode, a separation of about 550 mV between the peak oxidation potentials Of paracetamol and caffeine present in binary mixtures was obtained. The calibration curves for the simultaneous determination of paracetamol and caffeine showed an excellent linear response, ranging from 5.0 x 10(-7) mol L(-1) to 8.3 x 10(-7) mol L(-1) for both compounds. The detection limits for the simultaneous determination of paracetamol and caffeine were 4.9 x 10(-7) mol L-1 and 3.5 x 10(-8) mol L(-1), respectively. The proposed method Was Successfully applied in the simultaneous determination of paracetamol and caffeine in several pharmaceutical formulations (tablets), with results similar to those obtained using a high-performance liquid chromatography method (at 95% confidence level). Methodology for identifying parameters for the TRNSYS model Type 210 -wood pellet stoves and boilers
Resumo:
This report describes a method how to perform measurements on boilers and stoves and how to identify parameters from the measurements for the boiler/stove-model TRNSYS Type 210. The model can be used for detailed annual system simulations using TRNSYS. Experience from measurements on three different pellet stoves and four boilers were used to develop this methodology. Recommendations for the set up of measurements are given and the re-quired combustion theory for the data evaluation and data preparation are given. The data evalua-tion showed that the uncertainties are quite large for the measured flue gas flow rate and for boilers and stoves with high fraction of energy going to the water jacket also the calculated heat rate to the room may have large uncertainties. A methodology for the parameter identification process and identified parameters for two different stoves and three boilers are given. Finally the identified models are compared with measured data showing that the model generally agreed well with meas-ured data during both stationary and dynamic conditions.

Random effect models have been widely applied in many fields of research. However, models with uncertain design matrices for random effects have been little investigated before. In some applications with such problems, an expectation method has been used for simplicity. This method does not include the extra information of uncertainty in the design matrix is not included. The closed solution for this problem is generally difficult to attain. We therefore propose an two-step algorithm for estimating the parameters, especially the variance components in the model. The implementation is based on Monte Carlo approximation and a Newton-Raphson-based EM algorithm. As an example, a simulated genetics dataset was analyzed. The results showed that the proportion of the total variance explained by the random effects was accurately estimated, which was highly underestimated by the expectation method. By introducing heuristic search and optimization methods, the algorithm can possibly be developed to infer the 'model-based' best design matrix and the corresponding best estimates.
