An efficient algorithm for solving the transient radiative transfer equation for laser pulse propagation in biological tissue is presented. A Laguerre expansion is used to represent the time dependency of the incident short pulse. The Runge–Kutta– Fehlberg method is used to solve the intensity. The discrete ordinates method is used to discretize with respect to azimuthal and zenith angles. This method offers the advantages of representing the intensity with a high accuracy using only a few Laguerre polynomials, and straightforward extension to inhomogeneous media. Also, this formulation can be easily extended for solving the 2-D and 3-D transient radiative transfer equations.

Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, is a pollutant-impacted environment that is extensively fished both professionally and recreationally. Consumption of contaminated fish represents a potential threat to human health, and fish exposed to environmental contaminants may themselves be affected in a similar fashion. This study describes a fish health index based on histological alterations identified in multiple organs of the sand flathead Platycephalus bassensis. Alterations were evident in tissues from all individuals assessed, with common pathologies observed in the gills, skin, kidney, liver and spleen. Alterations commonly present included necrosis, melanomacrophage centres, inflammation and multiple alterations of the gill epithelium (e.g. hyperplasia and hypertrophy). Fish health, calculated using severity of histological alterations, differed significantly across Port Phillip Bay, with heavily industrialized regions of Altona and St. Helens showing greatest alteration prevalence across multiple organs. This study indicates that the health of P.bassensis from Altona, St. Helens, and Mornington to a lesser extent, are currently compromised, potentially due to complex pollutant exposures which require further investigation

Knowledge of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PgR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) status is necessary for determining the optimal treatment of breast cancer patients. At the same time, the discordance between marker profiles (ER/PR and HER2) of primary and metastatic breast cancer is well documented. Whether discordant cases are secondary to “clonal selection” in the face of targeted anti-estrogen or anti-HER2 therapy or whether they are a laboratory artifact is still debated; both scenarios are likely. This article outlines current modalities for ER, PR, and HER2 testing in primary breast carcinoma and its metastases and reviews prospective and retrospective studies that have addressed these issues, as well as recent advances in the field.

Isotopic discrimination and turn-over are fundamental to the application of stable isotope ecology in animals. However, detailed information for specific tissues and species are widely lacking, notably for herbivorous species. We provide details on tissue-specific carbon and nitrogen discrimination and turn-over times from food to blood, feathers, claws, egg tissues and offspring down feathers in four species of herbivorous waterbirds. Source-to-tissue discrimination factors for carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ15N) showed little variation across species but varied between tissues. Apparent discrimination factors ranged between −0.5 to 2.5‰ for δ13C and 2.8 to 5.2‰ for δ15N, and were more similar between blood components than between keratinous tissues or egg tissue. Comparing these results with published data from other species we found no effect of foraging guild on discrimination factors for carbon but a significant foraging-guild effect for nitrogen discrimination factors.

Turn-over of δ13C in tissues was most rapid in blood plasma, with a half-life of 4.3 d, whereas δ13C in blood cells had a half-life of approximately 32 d. Turn-over times for albumen and yolk in laying females were similar to those of blood plasma, at 3.2 and 6.0 d respectively. Within yolk, we found decreasing half-life times of δ13C from inner yolk (13.3 d) to outer yolk (3.1 d), related to the temporal pattern of tissue formation.

We found similarities in tissue-specific turn-over times across all avian species studied to date. Yet, while generalities regarding discrimination factors and tissue turn-over times can be made, a large amount of variation remains unexplained.

Phosphorescence lifetime imaging has become a widely used technique for tomographic oxygen imaging. The conventional model used to characterize photon transport in phosphorescence imaging is two coupled diffusion equations. On the premise that the total energy of excitation and phosphorescence photon flows must be conserved, we derive the diffusion equations in phosphorescence imaging and show that there must be an additional term to account for the transport of phosphorescent photons. This additional term accounts for the transport of phosphorescence photon energy density due to its gradients. The significance of this term in modelling phosphorescence in biological tissue is assessed.

In this paper, porous Ti14Nb4Sn alloys were fabricated using a space holder sintering method, resulting in a porosity of ~70%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses revealed a combination of both macropore and micropore structures. The fabricated titanium alloy scaffolds exhibited a similar structure to that of natural bone, which is expected to improve bone implant longevity. Bacterial cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 were employed for the in vitro test.

We investigated the effects of exercise training on adipose tissue and skeletal muscle GLUT4 expression in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Muscle and adipose tissue samples were obtained before and after 4-weeks of exercise training in seven patients with T2D [47 ± 2 years, body mass index (BMI) 28 ± 2]. Seven control subjects (54 ± 4, BMI 30 ± 2) were recruited for baseline comparison. Adipose tissue GLUT4 protein expression was 43% lower (p < 0.05) in patients with T2D compared with control subjects and exercise training increased (p < 0.05) adipose tissue GLUT4 expression by 36%. Skeletal muscle GLUT4 protein expression was not different between control subjects and patients with T2D. Exercise training increased (p < 0.05) skeletal muscle GLUT4 protein expression by 20%. In conclusion, 4-weeks of exercise training increased GLUT4 expression in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle of patients with T2D, although the functional benefits of this adaptation appear to be dependent on an optimal β-cell function.

Mice lacking the Jak tyrosine kinase member Tyk2 become progressively obese due to aberrant development of Myf5+ brown adipose tissue (BAT). Tyk2 RNA levels in BAT and skeletal muscle, which shares a common progenitor with BAT, are dramatically decreased in mice placed on a high-fat diet and in obese humans. Expression of Tyk2 or the constitutively active form of the transcription factor Stat3 (CAStat3) restores differentiation in Tyk2−/− brown preadipocytes. Furthermore, Tyk2−/− mice expressing CAStat3 transgene in BAT also show improved BAT development, normal levels of insulin, and significantly lower body weights. Stat3 binds to PRDM16, a master regulator of BAT differentiation, and enhances the stability of PRDM16 protein. These results define Tyk2 and Stat3 as critical determinants of brown fat lineage and suggest that altered levels of Tyk2 are associated with obesity in both rodents and humans.
