Statistical time series methods have proven to be a promising technique in structural health monitoring, since it provides a direct form of data analysis and eliminates the requirement for domain transformation. Latest research in structural health monitoring presents a number of statistical models that have been successfully used to construct quantified models of vibration response signals. Although a majority of these studies present viable results, the aspects of practical implementation, statistical model construction and decision-making procedures are often vaguely defined or omitted from presented work. In this article, a comprehensive methodology is developed, which essentially utilizes an auto-regressive moving average with exogenous input model to create quantified model estimates of experimentally acquired response signals. An iterative self-fitting algorithm is proposed to construct and fit the auto-regressive moving average with exogenous input model, which is capable of integrally finding an optimum set of auto-regressive moving average with exogenous input model parameters. After creating a dataset of quantified response signals, an unlabelled response signal can be identified according to a 'closest-fit' available in the dataset. A unique averaging method is proposed and implemented for multi-sensor data fusion to decrease the margin of error with sensors, thus increasing the reliability of global damage identification. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed methodology, a steel frame structure subjected to various bolt-connection damage scenarios is tested. Damage identification results from the experimental study suggest that the proposed methodology can be employed as an efficient and functional damage identification tool. © The Author(s) 2014.

Methylphenidate (MPH) is a widely prescribed psychostimulant for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Recently, some studies have addressed the genotoxic potential of the MPH, but the results have been contradictory. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate the index of cerebral and peripheral DNA damage in young and adult rats after acute and chronic MPH exposure.

Ionizing radiation (IR)-induced DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) can lead to cell death, genome instability and carcinogenesis. Immunofluorescence detection of phosphorylated histone variant H2AX (γ-H2AX) is a reliable and sensitive technique to monitor external beam IR-induced DSBs in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). Here, we investigated whether γ-H2AX could be used as an in vivo marker to assess normal tissue toxicity after extended internal irradiation with (177)Lu-DOTA-octreotate peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (LuTate PRRT) of neuroendocrine tumors.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a short-duration (5-6 min, 3 d·wk) resistive exercise program with (RVE) or without (RE) whole-body vibration in reducing muscle atrophy in the lower limb during prolonged inactivity when compared with that in an inactive control group. METHODS: As part of the second Berlin BedRest Study, 24 male subjects underwent 60 d of head-down tilt bed rest. Using magnetic resonance imaging, muscle volumes of the individual muscles of the lower limb were calculated before and at various intervals during and after bed rest. Pain levels and markers of muscle damage were also evaluated during and after bed rest. Adjustment of P values to guard against false positives was performed via the false discovery rate method. RESULTS: On the "intent-to-treat" analysis, RE reduced atrophy of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius, soleus, vasti, tibialis posterior, flexor hallucis longus, and flexor digitorum longus (P ≤ 0.045 vs control group) and RVE reduced atrophy of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius and tibialis posterior (P ≤ 0.044). Pain intensity reports after bed rest were lower in RE at the foot (P ≤ 0.033) and whole lower limb (P = 0.01) and in RVE at the thigh (P ≤ 0.041), lower leg (P ≤ 0.01), and whole lower limb (P ≤ 0.036). Increases in sarcomere-specific creatine kinase after bed rest were less in RE (P = 0.020) and RVE (P = 0.020). No differences between RE and RVE were observed. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, a short-duration RVE or RE can be effective in reducing the effect of prolonged bed rest on lower extremity muscle volume loss during bed rest and muscle damage and pain after bed rest. The performance of footings in residential construction is influenced by the degree of ground movement, particularly in reactive soils, which is driven by the magnitude of change in soil moisture. New patterns of climate are affecting residential foundations and causing serious and expensive damage. This paper produces a map of potential risk for housing damage from ground movement due to climate change. Using a geographic information system, it combines information on (1) soil moisture change related to climate, using TMI as the indicator, and (2) population growth. Preliminary results, having Victoria, Australia, in the last decade as the case study, suggest that effects of climate change on soil, and resulting impacts on house foundations, are not being taken into consideration in current planning strategies for urban development. Most of the urban growth priority zones in the study area are susceptible to medium and high risk for damage. Producing new and renovated buildings that are durable in the long term is essential for the economy, environment and social welfare. The map presented here can assist policies and strategies towards urban resilience in the context of climate change.

Civil infrastructures are critical to every nation, due to their substantial investment, long service period, and enormous negative impacts after failure. However, they inevitably deteriorate during their service lives. Therefore, methods capable of assessing conditions and identifying damage in a structure timely and accurately have drawn increasing attention. Recently, compressive sensing (CS), a significant breakthrough in signal processing, has been proposed to capture and represent compressible signals at a rate significantly below the traditional Nyquist rate. Due to its sound theoretical background and notable influence, this methodology has been successfully applied in many research areas. In order to explore its application in structural damage identification, a new CS-based damage identification scheme is proposed in this paper, by regarding damage identification problems as pattern classification problems. The time domain structural responses are transferred to the frequency domain as sparse representation, and then the numerical simulated data under various damage scenarios will be used to train a feature matrix as input information. This matrix can be used for damage identification through an optimization process. This will be one of the first few applications of this advanced technique to structural engineering areas. In order to demonstrate its effectiveness, numerical simulation results on a complex pipe soil interaction model are used to train the parameters and then to identify the simulated pipe degradation damage and free-spanning damage. To further demonstrate the method, vibration tests of a steel pipe laid on the ground are carried out. The measured acceleration time histories are used for damage identification. Both numerical and experimental verification results confirm that the proposed damage identification scheme will be a promising tool for structural health monitoring.

This paper presents an experimental study on cuboid stirrup-confined concrete specimens under uniaxial monotonic loading and cyclic loading. The effects of stirrup volume ratio, stirrup yield strength, and concrete strength on damage evolution of the stirrup-confined concrete were investigated. The experimental results showed that the strength and ductility of concrete are improved by appropriate arrangement of the stirrup confinement. Firstly, with the increase of the stirrup volume ratio, the damage evolution of concrete can be relatively restrained. Secondly, higher stirrup yield strength usually leads to larger confining pressures and slower damage evolution. In contrast, higher concrete strength leads to higher brittleness, which accelerates damage evolution. Based on the experimental data, a plastic strain expression is obtained through curve fitting, and a damage evolution equation for stirrup-confined concrete is proposed by introducing a confinement factor (C). The comparisons results demonstrated that the proposed damage evolution curve can accurately describe the experimental results.

The objective of this study was to characterize acrosomal ultrastructure following discontinuous Percoll gradient centrifugation of cryopreserved bovine sperm. Semen was collected from six bulls of different breeds and three ejaculates per bull were evaluated. Frozen semen samples were thawed and the acrosomal region of sperm cells was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) before (n = 18) and after (n = 18) Percoll centrifugation. The evaluation of 20 sperm heads from each of the 36 samples analyzed ensured that a large number of cells were investigated. The data were subjected to analysis of variance at a level of significance of 5%. Percoll centrifugation reduced the percentage of sperm exhibiting normal acrosomes (from 61.77 to 30.24%), reduced the percentage of sperm presenting atypical acrosome reactions (from 28.38 to 4.84%) and increased the percentage of sperm exhibiting damage in the acrosome (from 6.14 to 64.26%). The percentage of sperm with typical acrosome reactions was not significantly different before (3.70%) and after (0.67%) centrifugation. TEM distinguished four different types of acrosomal status and enabled ultrastructural characterization of acrosomal injuries. The percentage of sperm exhibiting normal acrosomes decreased and damage in the acrosome was the most frequent acrosomal injury with the Percoll gradient centrifugation protocol utilized.
