Geochemistry of surface sediment samples from the South Atlantic Ocean

The aim of the present study is an evaluation of the applicability of biogenic barium as a proxy for productivity. For this purpose, 190 surface sediment samples from the South Atlantic Ocean were analysed for their barium and aluminium concentrations. Biogenic barium is estimated by subtracting the calculated terrigenous barium (obtained from the terrigenous Ba/Al ratio and the amount of Al in the sample) from the total Ba content in the sample. Based on the accumulation rates of biogenic barium, export production is estimated using three different algorithms proposed by [Paleoceanography 7 (1992) 163, doi:10.1029/92PA00181; Global Biogeochem. Cycles 9 (1995) 289, doi:10.1029/95GB00021; Geomar. Report 38 (1995) 105]. Primary productivity was calculated from these different export productions and compared with measurements of recent primary productivity in the overlying surface waters. Only the primary productions calculated on the basis of the algorithm of [Paleoceanography 7 (1992) 163, doi:10.1029/92PA00181] yield productivity values comparable to those existing in ocean surface waters. This study further reveals that it is not sufficient to use a constant, generally applicable organic carbon/biogenic barium ratio, as is postulated by [Global Biogeochem. Cycles 9 (1995) 289, doi:10.1029/95GB00021]. This ratio has to be assessed regionally. For the sediments of the Cape Basin in the eastern South Atlantic Ocean, a new algorithm is developed which gives plausible primary productivities for the overlying surface waters.

Cretaceous nannofossils of southeast France

The Aptian-lower Albian succession of the Vocontian Basin (SE France) consists of marine hemipelagic sediments including several black shale horizons. The latter are partly of regional and partly of global distribution. This sedimentary succession records the nannoplankton evolution of the Aptian-early Albian interval and thus provides an excellent opportunity to calibrate the calcareous nannofossil record with Tethyan ammonite and planktic foraminiferal biostratigraphy. The calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy presented in this paper supports previous zonations, but it also provides a much higher resolution and thus improves the correlation of different black shale horizons on a supraregional scale. Up to 23 major (supraregionally significant) and minor (regionally significant) first and last occurrences of calcareous nannofossil taxa are recognized. Nannoconid abundances decrease rapidly in the upper Lower Aptian (nannoconid crisis I, NCI) and in the middle Upper Aptian (nannoconid crisis II, NCII). Both decreases correlate with carbonate-platform drowning events. The upper Lower Aptian interval above the NCI is characterized by high abundances of large specimens of Assipetra infracretacea and Rucinolithus terebrodentarius probably of supraregional significance. The uppermost Aptian-Lower Albian is characterized by high abundances of the calcareous nannoplankton taxon Repagulum parvidentatum, reflecting boreal influence on the Tethyan Realm. This suggests a temporary decrease in surface-water temperatures in the Vocontian Basin.

Erprobung von Messtechnik zur Untersuchung und Optimierung strömungsmechanischer und holztechnologischer Abläufe in Refinern

Die Produktion von Holzfasern beinhaltet eine Vielzahl physikalisch-technologischer Prozesse, deren Komplexität vom Holzplatz bis zur Zerfaserung deutlich zunimmt. Da die Wirkungsweise und physikalische Zusammenhänge der Zerfaserung im Refiner zum gegenwärtigen Zeitpunkt nur in geringem Maße beschrieben werden können, kann eine Prozesseinstellung zur definierten und reproduzierbaren Faserqualität nicht durchgeführt werden. Vorhandenes Wissen beruht auf Erfahrungen und empirisch gefundenen Zusammenhängen, nicht aber auf wissenschaftlich fundierten Erkenntnissen. Deshalb soll mit Hilfe verschiedenster Messtechniken versucht werden, Informationen zum Prozess des Faserstofftransportes im Refiner zu erhalten, die anschließend zur Validierung eines CFD Modell des Laborrefiners genutzt werden können. Später sollen – so weit vorhanden – energiebezogene Schwachstellen im CFD Modell des Refiners erkannt und reduziert werden, so dass ein neues energieoptimiertes Refinergehäuse entwickelt werden kann.

Intertextualität und Vergangenheitsarbeit in Judith Hermanns ‚Sommerhaus, später‘

Dieser Beitrag versteht sich als Gegendarstellung zur verbreiteten Einschätzung von Judith Hermann als einer oberflächlichen Lifestyle-Autorin, die eine Auseinandersetzung mit sozio-historischen Zusammenhängen scheut. Es wird gezeigt, wie Hermann sich in deutsche Vergangenheitsdiskurse einschreibt und mithilfe einer komplexen Intertextualität eine deutsche Traditionslinie männlich-hegemonialer und antisemitischer Strukturen vom Kaiserreich über die NS-Zeit zur Berliner Republik nachzeichnet. Hermann demonstriert die Schwierigkeit einer sinnstiftenden Auseinandersetzung mit der deutschen Vergangenheit angesichts der selektiven Tradierung von Erinnerung und des andauernden privaten Schweigens auf Täterseite. Die daraus resultierenden Prozesse der diffizilen Identitätssuche im Nachwende-Deutschland umschreibt die Autorin durch den Einsatz einer polyvalenten Wassermetaphorik, welche die von der Fiktionalisierung der Vergangenheit geprägte Berliner Republik als ein terrain vague historischer und textueller Entwurzelung charakterisiert, das von der Abwesenheit gültiger Deutungsangebote geprägt ist. Durch diese Bewertung der deutschen Historizität heben sich Hermanns Erzählungen sowohl von der Nachkriegsliteratur als auch von den Werken anderer Gegenwartsautoren ab und nehmen im Kontext literarischer Vergangenheitsbewältigung eine noch unerforschte Sonderstellung ein.
