Analytical Measures of Learners' Written Interlanguage

This paper aims at reconsidering some analytical measures to best encapsulate the interlanguage, in writing, of young beginner learners of English as a foreign language in the light of previous and work-in-progress research conducted within the BAF project, and in particular, whether clause and sentence length should be best viewed as a fluency or syntactic complexity measusre or as part of a different construct. In the light of a factor analysis (Navés, forthcoming) and multivariate and correlation studies (Navés et al. 2003, Navés, 2006, Torres et al. 2006) it becomes clear that the relationship between different analytical measures is also dependent on learner¿s cognitive maturity (age) and proficiency (amount of instruction). Finally, clause and sentence length should not be viewed as either a fluency or sytactic complexity measure but as part of a different construct. It is concluded that further research using regression analysis and cluster analysis is neeed in order to identify and validate the constructs of the writing components and their measurements.

Aplicación de ácido giberélico en alcaucil

En el Cinturón Hortícola de Rosario (33º 1' L.S y 60º 59' L.O.) la producción de alcaucil (Cynara scolymus L.) se concentra desde agosto a octubre. Para incrementar la rentabilidad debería adelantarse la fecha de cosecha a los meses de mayores precios, lo que podría lograrse con la pulverización exógena de ácido giberélico (AG3). Se evaluó el comportamiento de cultivares agrupadas según su precocidad frente a la aplicación de AG3 y su efecto sobre el ingreso bruto. Se utilizó un diseño en bloques completos aleatorizados con dos repeticiones. Se aplicaron 50 ppm de AG3 en abril más 25 ppm en mayo de 1994 y 1995. El número de alcauciles por ha, peso promedio, diámetro y altura, rendimiento, peso medio del capítulo de primer rango, días a cosecha y días de cosecha, fueron analizados a través de un análisis de variancia a dos criterios de clasificación por año y en un análisis combinado de años. La aplicación de AG3 en 1994 anticipó la producción en 52 días para el Grupo I, 6 días para el II y sólo 3 días para el III, ampliándose los días de cosecha en 60, 8 y 3 respectivamente, mostrándose igual tendencia en 1995. No se produjeron modificaciones significativas en el resto de las variables para los dos años de ensayo. La aplicación de AG3 generó un ingreso bruto superior dependiendo su magnitud de los años evaluados y del grupo analizado.

Les llengües en els òrgans centrals de l'Estat espanyol (un balanç de 25 anys de la CE)

L'article de Boix fa un balanç de les llengües en els òrgans centrals de l'Estat espanyol al llarg de 25 anys de la Constitució espanyola. L'article està bastit a partir de dos blocs: el primer és una presentació històrica de la relació entre l'Estat i les llengües, i el segon és una valoració per part del propi autor sobre les necessitats actuals de la política lingüística estatal. Floods of July 19-25, 1999, in the Wapsipinicon and Cedar River Basins, Northeast Iowa, HR-140

Severe flooding occurred during July 19-25, 1999, in the Wapsipinicon and Cedar River Basins following two thunderstorms over northeast Iowa. During July 18-19, as much as 6 inches ofrainfall was centered over Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Mitchell, and Worth Counties. During July 20-21, a second storm occurred in which an additional rainfall of as much as 8 inches was centered over Chickasaw and Floyd Counties. The cumulative effect of the storms produced floods with new maximum peak discharges at the following streamflow-gaging stations: Wapsipinicon River near Tripoli, 19,400 cubic feet per second; Cedar River at Charles City, 31,200 cubic feet per second (recurrence interval about 90 years); Cedar River at Janesville, 42,200 cubic feet per second (recurrence interval about 80 years); and Flood Creek near Powersville, 19,000 cubic feet per second. Profiles of flood elevations for the July 1999 flood are presented in this report for selected reaches along the Wapsipinicon, Cedar, and Shell Rock Rivers and along Flood Creek. Information about the river basins, rain storms, and flooding are presented along with information on temporary bench marks and reference points in the Wapsipinicon and Cedar River Basins.
