Confirmation: Increasing resource availability for transactional workflows

The notion of compensation is widely used in advanced transaction models as means of recovery from a failure. Similar concepts are adopted for providing transaction-like behaviour for long business processes supported by workflows technology. In general, it is not trivial to design compensating tasks for tasks in the context of a workflow. Actually, a task in a workflow process does not have to be compensatable in the sense that the forcibility of reverse operations of the task is not always guaranteed by the application semantics. In addition, the isolation requirement on data resources may make a task difficult to compensate. In this paper, we first look into the requirements that a compensating task has to satisfy. Then we introduce a new concept called confirmation. With the help of confirmation, we are able to modify most non-compensatable tasks so that they become compensatable. This can substantially increase the availability of shared resources and greatly improve backward recovery for workflow applications in case of failures. To effectively incorporate confirmation and compensation into a workflow management environment, a three level bottom-up workflow design method is introduced. Isoform specific changes in calcium transporters in colon and breast cancer cell lines

Calcium transporters play vital roles in the transport of calcium ions across cells of the mammary gland and the intestine. One such transporter is the plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA), of which there are 4 different genes (PMCA1-4). In these studies we investigated the hypothesis that the expression of PMCA is altered in HT-29 colon cancer cells during sodium butyrate and post-confluence mediated differentiation. We also investigated if PMCA expression is altered in breast cancer cell lines in an isofrom specific manner. Our results indicate isoform specific changes in PMCA mRNA and protein levels in HT-29 cells during differentiation, using real time RT-PCR and western blotting, respectively. We also observed pronounced alterations in the mRNA levels of the PMCA isoform linked to lactation (PMCA2) in a bank of breast cancer cell lines compared to normal cell lines. Changes in other isoforms were less pronounced. To further study the role of specific calcium transporters we have optimised conditions for the reverse transfection of MCF-7 breast cancer cells using NeoFX (Ambion). Using real time RT-PCR we have confirmed gene knockdown for specific isoforms and have studied the time course of knockdown over 96 hours. We see approximately 68 % inhibition at 24 hours increasing to 84 % 96 hours post-reverse transfection. Our studies suggest that the expression of specific calcium transporter isoforms can be significantly altered in cancer cell lines and that isoform specific inhibition of calcium transporters is possible using reverse transfection of siRNA

ESPIRITUALIDADE FETICHISTA PARA O TRABALHO PRECARIZADO: UMA CRÍTICA TEOLÓGICA À ATUAL LINGUAGEM RELIGIOSA DAS EMPRESAS

Esta pesquisa busca investigar a literatura e discurso empresarial acerca da espiritualidade para o trabalho, com vistas a fundamentar a seguinte afirmativa: por representar um dispositivo de subsunção da classe-que-vive-do-trabalho aos imperativos do capital, certas formas de espiritualidade para o trabalho representam um fetiche. Para tanto, partindo dos processos deflagrados contra o mundo do trabalho, em meados dos anos de 1970, indicaremos as transformações ocorridas na engenharia de produção capitalista - especificamente a partir dos anos de 1990 quando os reflexos adjacentes a reestruturação produtiva do capital, chegam ao Brasil. Não obstante, fundamentalmente a partir das contribuições de Ricardo Antunes e Giovanni Alves, nossos esforços concentrar-se-ão em demonstrar que em paralelo a intensificação-precarização do trabalho, há aquilo que a sociologia do trabalho denomina por captura da subjetividade. Deste modo, indicaremos que o capitalismo em sua nova fase global e flexibilizada - tendo em vista a preservação de seu metabolismo social, acaba por ter de lançar mão de novos mecanismos ideológicos específicos voltados para a manutenção-subsunção da força de trabalho vivo. Assim, após uma análise geral do sistema capitalista de produção, voltaremos nossos olhos ao universo das empresas; neste sentido, nosso movimento ocorrerá do macro ao micro. Considerando o atual discurso empresarial, especificamente a partir da literatura voltada à nova cultura organizacional do trabalho, buscaremos sustentar a seguinte hipótese: a fim de perpetuar a exploração da força de trabalho vivo, as empresas hoje lançam mão do discurso religioso, com vistas a instrumentalizar também a espiritualidade dos funcionários. Finalmente, através das contribuições de Marià Corbí e Franz Hinkelammert, que sobretudo sinalizam as transformações do campo religioso, buscar-se-á compreender os meios pelos quais as empresas se apropriam da linguagem religiosa relativa à esfera da espiritualidade, e a transvertem seu conteúdo (processo de fetichização da espiritualidade), de forma a disporem de mais um mecanismo ideológico para motivação de seus funcionários. Sobretudo, procuraremos explicitar que a linguagem religiosa das empresas acerca da espiritualidade para o trabalho, é um fetiche.
