The developments at international level in the debate on what intellectual property (IP) lawyers refer to as traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) have to be seen in the context of the decolonisation movements after the Second World War. Post-war developments saw the formation of the United Nations (UN) and the emphasis on human rights in the UN Charter. With this emphasis came development programmes for indigenous peoples and the recognition of indigenous rights in the ILO Convention No. 107 of the 1957 Concerning the Protection and Intergration of Indigenous and Other Tribal and Semi-Tribal Populations in the Independant Countries. The decolonisation movements also initiated or renewed a parallel debate about the repatriation of items of cultural heritage. There was a remarkable shift in this discussion from 'cultural heritage of mankind' to cultural particularism and an emphasis on 'cultural property' ....

Purpose – The application of “Google” econometrics (Geco) has evolved rapidly in recent years and can be applied in various fields of research. Based on accepted theories in existing economic literature, this paper seeks to contribute to the innovative use of research on Google search query data to provide a new innovative to property research.

Design/methodology/approach – In this study, existing data from Google Insights for Search (GI4S) is extended into a new potential source of consumer sentiment data based on visits to a commonly-used UK online real-estate agent platform (Rightmove.co.uk). In order to contribute to knowledge about the use of Geco's black box, namely the unknown sampling population and the specific search queries influencing the variables, the GI4S series are compared to direct web navigation.

Findings – The main finding from this study is that GI4S data produce immediate real-time results with a high level of reliability in explaining the future volume of transactions and house prices in comparison to the direct website data. Furthermore, the results reveal that the number of visits to Rightmove.co.uk is driven by GI4S data and vice versa, and indeed without a contemporaneous relationship.

Originality/value – This study contributes to the new emerging and innovative field of research involving search engine data. It also contributes to the knowledge base about the increasing use of online consumer data in economic research in property markets.

This article traces the development of the jurisprudence surrounding compulsory acquisition of property with a particular focus on the application of s 51(xxxi) of the Australian Constitution to statutory property. The examination reveals a clearly articulated methodology developed by the High Court that is principled, transparent and logically consistent with the purpose of the provision. This is contrasted with two recent decisions of the High Court, ICM Agriculture Pty Ltd v Commonwealth and Phonographic Performance Company of Australia Ltd v Commonwealth which indicate a concerning development to move away from such methodology and introduce new factors for consideration. It is argued that such development threatens to undermine the principled and transparent application of s 51(xxxi) and may reintroduce unnecessary methodological uncertainty.

Axisymmetric forward spiral extrusion (AFSE) accumulates large strains in its sample while extruding it through a die with engraved spiral grooves. A three-dimensional finite element model of AFSE has been developed using ABAQUS to investigate the deformation mode in detail, including the effect of groove geometry and the heterogeneity of plastic deformation. The numerical results demonstrated that the strain distribution in the AFSE sample cross section is linear in the radial direction within a concentric core while the distribution, outside the core, in the vicinity of the grooves is non-linear and non-axisymmetric. Mechanical properties and grain structure changes of the deformed sample were investigated. Improvements of mechanical properties in the processed samples can be attributed to the domination of the shear deformation mode in a plane normal to the extrusion axis and consequently the elongation of grains in the tangential direction

Virtual worlds have become highly popular in recent years with reports of over a billion people accessing these worlds and the virtual goods market growing to near $50 US billion dollars. An undesirable outcome to this popularity and market value is thriving criminal activity in these worlds.  The most profitable transgression at the moment in virtual worlds is named Virtual Property Theft.  The aim of this study is to gain insight using an online survey, as to how thieves in these synthetic worlds conduct their criminal activities.  This survey asked questions on: thief profiling, how theft was conducted, times of criminal activity, which items are stolen and distributed, victim targeting and criminal profiteering.  This survey is the first to report an insight into the criminal mind of virtual thieves.  The results of this study will provide a pathway for designing an effective anti-theft mechanism capable of abolishing this criminal enterprise.

The pharmaceutical industry in Pakistan is worth around US$ l.18 billion, with annual growth in 2010 approaching 10 per cent (Khan, 2012). There are more than 650 registered companies, including 31 multinationals, which in 2006 had a market share in value terms of 53.3 per cent, with national firms controlling the remaining 46.7 per cent (IMS Health, 2007). In 2007 medicines worth about US$100 million were exported. Medicines are a vital component of healthcare, and Pakistan spends around three-quarters of its healthcare budget on medicines (WHO, 2004). This chapter provides an overview, from a public health perspective, of the national pharmaceutical market and the development of drug policies and regulation. Pakistan adopted a Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) compliant patent regime in 2000, and the intersection between patents and public health is a central policy challenge. This chapter highlights key issues related to intellectual property, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), and production and access to medicines.

Even though the importance of the local monotonicity property for function approximation problems is well established, there are relative few investigations addressing issues related to the fulfillment of the local monotonicity property in Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) modeling. We have previously conducted a preliminary study on the local monotonicity property of FIS models, with the assumption that the extrema point(s) (i.e., the maximum and/or minimum point(s)) is either known precisely or totally unknown. However, in some practical situations, the extrema point(s) can be known imprecisely (as an interval or a fuzzy set). In this paper, the imprecise information is exploited to construct an FIS model that fulfills the local monotonicity property. A procedure to estimate the extrema point(s) of a function is devised. Applicability of the findings to a datadriven modeling problem is further demonstrated.
