The Anatomy of the Thoracic Spinal Canal Investigated with Magnetic Resonance Imaging

BACKGROUND: We investigated, with magnetic resonance imaging, the distance of the dura mater to the spinal cord in patients without spinal or medullar disease at the 2nd, 5th, and 10th thoracic segments.METHODS: Fifty patients in the supine position underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Medial sagittal slices of the 2nd, 5th, and 10th thoracic segments were measured for the relative distances using the 1.5-T superconducting system (Gyroscan Intera, Philips Medical Systems, Best, the Netherlands). In 10 patients, the angles relative to the tangent at the insertion point on the skin were measured.RESULTS: The posterior dural-spinal cord distance is significantly greater at the midthoracic region (5th thoracic = 5.8 +/- 0.8 mm) than at the upper (2nd thoracic = 3.9 +/- 0.8 mm) and lower thoracic levels (10th thoracic = 4.1 +/- 1.0 mm) (P < 0.015). There were no differences between interspaces T2 and 110. There was no correlation between age and the measured distance between the dura mater and the spinal cord. The entry angle of the needle at T2 was 9.0 degrees +/- 2.5 degrees; at T5, 45.0 degrees +/- 7.4 degrees; and at T10, 9.50 degrees +/- 4.2 degrees.CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that there is greater depth of the posterior subarachnoid space at the T2, T5, and T10 levels. Simultaneous Recording of Shadowgrams and Schlieren Images for the Study of Plasma Assisted Aerodynamics

This work describes an optical device for the simultaneous recording of shadowgrams and schlieren images, and some results are presented concerning its application to the study of plasma assisted flow control in airfoil models. This approach offers many advantages in comparison to other methods, specially because the use of tracer particles (like smoke in wind tunnels) is not required for the experiments, thus avoiding contaminations in the electric discharges or air flows. Besides, while schlieren images reveal the refractive index gradients in the area of study, shadowgrams detect the second order spatial derivatives of the refractive indexes. Therefore, the simultaneous recording of these different images may give interesting information about the phenomena under study.

Chemical composition and antioxidants potential of extracts of yellow melon seeds in Soybean oil

The aim of this work was to characterize the yellow melon seeds, hybrid variety, as for their proximate composition, and to evaluate the antioxidant potential of extracts of seed in soybean oil. The extract of melon seeds (EM), obtained by extraction using ethanol: water (95:5), was applied in soybean oil at three different concentrations (500; 750 and 1000 mg kg(-1)) and submitted to Shaal oven method at 60 degrees C for 20 days. Oil samples were evaluated for peroxic a value in periods of five days. The antioxidant activity of the extract was compared to the BHT (butyl-hydroxytoluene) activity. The melon seeds showed a high nutrition value, containing high percentages of lipids (25.2%), proteins (20.1%) and fiber (30.0%). All these treatments retarded lipid oxidation in soybean oil; however the natural extracts were less effective than BHT after 10 days in the oven. The antioxidant activities of different treatments tested in this study followed the order: BHT > EM 1000 mg kg(-1) = EM 750 mg kg(-1) > EM 500 mg kg(-1)> control.

Structure of 2-keto-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconate (KDPG) aldolase from Pseudomonas putida

2-Keto-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconate (KDPG) aldolase from Pseudomonas putida is a key enzyme in the Entner-Doudoroff pathway which catalyses the cleavage of KDPG via a class I Schiff-base mechanism. The crystal structure of this enzyme has been refined to a crystallographic residual R = 17.1% (R-free = 21.4%). The N-terminal helix caps one side of the torus of the (betaalpha)(8)-barrel and the active site is located on the opposite, carboxylic side of the barrel. The Schiff-base-forming Lys145 is coordinated by a sulfate (or phosphate) ion and two solvent water molecules. The interactions that stabilize the trimer are predominantly hydrophobic, with the exception of the cyclically permuted bonds formed between Glu132 OE1 of one molecule and Thr129 OG1 of a symmetry-equivalent molecule. Except for the N-terminal helix, the structure of KDPG aldolase from P. putida closely resembles the structure of the homologous enzyme from Escherichia coli.

The CMS experiment at the CERN LHC

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is described. The detector operates at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It was conceived to study proton-proton (and lead-lead) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV (5.5 TeV nucleon-nucleon) and at luminosities up to 10(34)cm(-2)s(-1) (10(27)cm(-2)s(-1)). At the core of the CMS detector sits a high-magnetic-field and large-bore superconducting solenoid surrounding an all-silicon pixel and strip tracker, a lead-tungstate scintillating-crystals electromagnetic calorimeter, and a brass-scintillator sampling hadron calorimeter. The iron yoke of the flux-return is instrumented with four stations of muon detectors covering most of the 4 pi solid angle. Forward sampling calorimeters extend the pseudo-rapidity coverage to high values (vertical bar eta vertical bar <= 5) assuring very good hermeticity. The overall dimensions of the CMS detector are a length of 21.6 m, a diameter of 14.6 m and a total weight of 12500 t.

An Intelligent Controller Design for Magnetorheological Damper Based on a Quarter-car Model

This paper presents the control strategies of nonlinear vehicle suspension using a magnetorheological (MR) damper. We used two different approaches for modeling and control of the mechanical and electrical parts of the suspension systems with the MR damper. First, we have formulated and resolved the control problem in order to design the linear feedback dumping force controller for a nonlinear suspension system. Then the values of the control dumping force functions were transformed into electrical control signals by the application of a fuzzy logic control method. The numerical simulations were provided in order to show the effectiveness of this method for the semi-active control of the quarter-car suspension.
