Background: The aim of this work was to study the new bone tissue formation after bone morphogenetic protein type 2 (rhBMP-2) and P-1 application, using 5 and 10 mu g of each, combined to a material carrier, in critical bone defects. Methods: It was used 70 Wistar rats (male, similar to 250 g) that were divided in 10 groups with seven animals on each. Groups are the following: critical bone defect only, pure monoolein gel, 5 mu g of pure P-1, 5 mu g of pure rhBMP-2, 5 mu g of P-1/monoolein gel, 5 mu g of rhBMP-2/monoolein gel, 10 mu g of pure P-1, 10 mu g of pure rhBMP-2, 10 mu g of P-1/monoolein gel, 10 mu g of rhBMP-2/monoolein gel. Animals were sacrificed after 4 weeks of the surgical procedure and the bone samples were submitted to histological, histomorphometrical, and immunohistochemical evaluations. Results: Animals treated with pure P-1 protein, in both situations with 5 mu g and 10 mu g, had no significant difference (P > 0.05) for new bone formation; other groups treated with 10 mu g were statistically significant (P < 0.05) among themselves and when compared with groups in which it was inserted the monoolein gel or critical bone defect only (P < 0.05). In the group involving the 10 mu g rhBMP-2/monoolein gel association, it was observed an extensive bone formation, even when compared with the same treatment without the gel carrier. Conclusion: Using this experimental animal model, more new bone tissue was found when it was inserted the rhBMP-2, especially when this protein was combined to the vehicle, and this process seems to be dose dependent. Once rare, septic shock (SS) due to disseminated fungal infections has been increasingly reported due to a growing number of immunocompromised patients, but remains rare in non-immune-compromised individuals. In paracoccidioidomycosis, it has been described in only three patients with the severe, acute form of the disease. We describe the development of a refractory, fatal septic shock due to a severe disseminated chronic form of paracoccidioidomycosis in an older woman without any other microbial insults. A striking event in the evolution of her case was the severe depletion of lymphocytes from the peripheral blood and lymphoid organs. Lymphocyte depletion due to apoptosis is described in the late phase of sepsis and can contribute both to immunosuppression and the progression of SS. The possible mechanisms involved in the induction of SS in the chronic form of paracoccidioidomycosis are discussed.

To report the radiological abnormalities of osteoarticular involvement in paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM). After institutional board approval, the medical records and conventional radiology findings of 19 patients with osseous PCM were retrospectively reviewed. Number, distribution, and lesion characteristics were evaluated in consensus by two experienced musculoskeletal radiologists. The mean age of patients was 16.1 years (range 4-49 years), 11 male and eight female. MSK involvement was the only or the primary presentation of the disease in eight of 19 patients (42.1%). In total, 51 focal bone lesions were detected, being 41 in long bones. In long bones lesions, 19 of 41 (46.4%) were metaphyseal, 12 of 41 (29.3%) meta-epiphyseal, and 12 of 41 (29.3%) diaphyseal. The most common presentation was a geographic osteolytic bone lesion (62.7%), without marginal sclerosis (82.4%) and without periosteal reaction (90.2%). Articular involvement was present in six of 19 patients (31.6%), being two cases of primary arthritis. All encountered bone lesions were osteolytic. Metaphyseal or meta-epiphyseal osteomyelitis of a long bone was the most prevalent osteoarticular manifestation of paracoccidioidomycosis. PCM osteoarticular involvement could be solitary or multifocal, occurs almost exclusively in the acute/subacute clinical form, and it is more common in children and in juvenile patients. Axial skeleton involvement, arthritis, or a disseminated osseous pattern of infection may occasionally occur in this fungal disease.

Background: In sites with diminished bone volume, the osseointegration of dental implants can be compromised. Innovative biomaterials have been developed to aid successful osseointegration outcomes. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the osteogenic potential of angiogenic latex proteins for improved bone formation and osseointegration of dental implants. Materials and Methods: Ten dogs were submitted to bilateral circumferential defects (5.0 x 6.3 mm) in the mandible. Dental implant (3.3 x 10.0 mm, TiUnite MK3 (TM), Nobel Biocare AB, Goteborg, Sweden) was installed in the center of the defects. The gap was filled either with coagulum (Cg), autogenous bone graft (BG), or latex angiogenic proteins pool (LPP). Five animals were sacrificed after 4 weeks and 12 weeks, respectively. Implant stability was evaluated using resonance frequency analysis (Osstell Mentor T, Osstell AB, Goteborg, Sweden), and bone formation was analyzed by histological and histometric analysis. Results: LPP showed bone regeneration similar to BG and Cg at 4 weeks and 12 weeks, respectively (p >= 3.05). Bone formation, osseointegration, and implant stability improved significantly from 4 to 12 weeks (p <= 2.05). Conclusion: Based on methodological limitations of this study, Cg alone delivers higher bone formation in the defect as compared with BG at 12 weeks; compared with Cg and BG, the treatment with LPP exhibits no advantage in terms of osteogenic potential in this experimental model, although overall osseointegration was not affected by the treatments employed in this study.

The present study provided information extending the known geographical distribution of three species of majoid crabs, the epialtids Acanthonyx dissimulatus Coelho, 1993, Epialtus bituberculatus H. Milne Edwards, 1834, and E. brasiliensis Dana, 1852. Specimens of both genera from different carcinological collections were studied by comparing morphological characters. We provide new data that extends the geographical distributions of E. bituberculatus to the coast of the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina (Brazil), and offer new records from Belize and Costa Rica. Epialtus brasiliensis is recorded for the first time in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), and A. dissimulatus is reported from Quintana Roo, Mexico. The distribution of A. dissimulatus, previously known as endemic to Brazil, has a gap between the states of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. However, this restricted southern distribution is herein amplified by the Mexican specimens.

This study presents new information on the feeding habits of the Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis, in the Western South Atlantic. Nine stomach contents of S. frontalis incidentally caught in fishing operations conducted by the gillnet fleet based on main harbour of Cananéia (25°00'S; 47°55'W), southeastern Brazil, were analyzed. These specimens were captured between 2005 and 2007. A total of 1 422 cephalopod beaks, 147 otoliths and three crustaceans were recovered from the stomach contents. The dolphins assessed preyed on at least eight different fish species of the families Trichiuridae, Carangidae, Sparidae, Merluccidae, Engraulidae, Sciaenidae, Congridae and Scombridae, five cephalopod species of the families Loliginidae, Sepiolidae, Tremoctopodidae and Thysanoteuthidae, and one shrimp species of the Penaeidae family. Based on the analysis of the Index of Relative Importance (IRI), the Atlantic cutlassfish, Trichiurus lepturus, was the most important fish species represented. Of the cephalopods, the squid Doryteuthis plei was by far the most representative species. Several items were reported for the first time as prey of the S. frontalis: Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, Tremoctopus violaceus, Semirossia tenera, Merluccius hubbsi, Pagrus pagrus and Paralonchurus brasiliensis. S. frontalis presented teuthophagous and ichthyofagous feeding habits, with apparent predominance of the first, and preyed mainly on pelagic and demersal items.
