Thiolases are essential CoA-dependent enzymes in lipid metabolism. In the present study we report the crystal structures of trypanosomal and leishmanial SCP2 (sterol carrier protein, type-2)-thiolases. Trypanosomatidae cause various widespread devastating (sub)-tropical diseases, for which adequate treatment is lacking. The structures reveal the unique geometry of the active site of this poorly characterized subfamily of thiolases. The key catalytic residues of the classical thiolases are two cysteine residues, functioning as a nucleophile and an acid/base respectively. The latter cysteine residue is part of a CxG motif. Interestingly, this cysteine residue is not conserved in SCP2-thiolases. The structural comparisons now show that in SCP2-thiolases the catalytic acid/base is provided by the cysteine residue of the HDCF motif, which is unique for this thiolase subfamily. This HDCF cysteine residue is spatially equivalent to the CxG cysteine residue of classical thiolases. The HDCF cysteine residue is activated for acid/base catalysis by two main chain NH-atoms, instead of two water molecules, as present in the CxG active site. The structural results have been complemented with enzyme activity data, confirming the importance of the HDCF cysteine residue for catalysis. The data obtained suggest that these trypanosomatid SCP2-thiolases are biosynthetic thiolases. These findings provide promise for drug discovery as biosynthetic thiolases catalyse the first step of the sterol biosynthesis pathway that is essential in several of these parasites.

Background: Deviated nasal septum (DNS) is one of the major causes of nasal obstruction. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nasal sensor is the new technique developed to assess the nasal obstruction caused by DNS. This study evaluates the PVDF nasal sensor measurements in comparison with PEAK nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) measurements and visual analog scale (VAS) of nasal obstruction. Methods: Because of piezoelectric property, two PVDF nasal sensors provide output voltage signals corresponding to the right and left nostril when they are subjected to nasal airflow. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the voltage signal corresponding to nasal airflow was analyzed to assess the nasal obstruction. PVDF nasal sensor and PNIF were performed on 30 healthy subjects and 30 DNS patients. Receiver operating characteristic was used to analyze the DNS of these two methods. Results: Measurements of PVDF nasal sensor strongly correlated with findings of PNIF (r = 0.67; p < 0.01) in DNS patients. A significant difference (p < 0.001) was observed between PVDF nasal sensor measurements and PNIF measurements of the DNS and the control group. A cutoff between normal and pathological of 0.51 Vp-p for PVDF nasal sensor and 120 L/min for PNIF was calculated. No significant difference in terms of sensitivity of PVDF nasal sensor and PNIF (89.7% versus 82.6%) and specificity (80.5% versus 78.8%) was calculated. Conclusion: The result shows that PVDF measurements closely agree with PNIF findings. Developed PVDF nasal sensor is an objective method that is simple, inexpensive, fast, and portable for determining DNS in clinical practice.

The performance of a two-phase heat transport device such as the loop heat pipe is influenced by the evaporative heat transfer coefficient in the evaporator. From previous experiments with loop heat pipes, it has been observed that fluids with a high heat pipe figure of merit have a high heat transfer coefficient. Considering an evaporating extended thin film, this paper theoretically corroborates this experimental observation by deriving a direct link between the evaporative heat flux at the interface and the fluid figures of merit (namely interline heat flow parameter and heat pipe figure of merit) in the thin film. Numerical experiments with different working fluids clearly show that a fluid with high figure of merit also has a high cumulative heat transfer in the microregion encompassing the evaporating thin film. Thus, a loop heat pipe or heat pipe that uses a working fluid with a high interline heat flow parameter and heat pipe figure of merit will lead to a high evaporative heat transfer coefficient.

Long range, continuous flow of liquid metals occurs upon application of an electric current. Here, we report experimental results elucidating the mechanism of current-induced liquid metal flow, and its dependence on substrate surface condition. It is shown that the observed flow is diffusion-controlled, with the flow-rate depending linearly on applied current density, indicating that it is driven by electromigration. The effective charge number for liquid electromigration, Z*, of several pure metals, such as Al, Bi, Ga, Sn, and Pb, were deduced from the experimental results and were found to be close to the elemental valency. With the exception of liquid Pb, Z* for all liquid metals tested in this study were positive, indicating that: (i) electron wind contributes much less to Z* in liquid metals than in solids, and (ii) with a few exceptions, liquid metals generally flow in the direction of the electric current. On smooth substrates which are wetted well by the liquid metal, flow occurs in a thin, continuous stream. On rough surfaces which are poorly wetted, on the other hand, discrete beads of liquid form, with mass transport between adjacent beads occurring by surface diffusion on the substrate. A rationale for the role of substrate roughness in fostering this observed transition in flow mechanism is presented. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

This paper presents a new voltage stability index based on the tangent vector of the power flow jacobian. This index is capable of providing the relative vulnerability information of the system buses from the point of view of voltage collapse. In an effort to compare this index with a similar index, the popular voltage stability index L is studied and it is shown through system studies that the L index is not a very consistent indicator of the voltage collapse point of the system but is only a reasonable indicator of the vulnerability of the system buses to voltage collapse. We also show that the new index can be used in the voltage stability analysis of radial systems which is not possible with the L index. This is a significant result of this investigation since there is a lot of contemporary interest in distributed generation and microgrids which are by and large radial in nature. Simulation results considering several test systems are provided to validate the results and the computational needs of the proposed scheme is assessed in comparison with other schemes

The ultimate bearing capacity of strip foundations subjected to horizontal groundwater flow has been computed by making use of the stress characteristics method which is well known for its capability in solving quite accurately different stability problems in geotechnical engineering. The numerical solution has been generated both for smooth and rough footings placed on frictional soils. A correction factor (fγ) associated with Nγ term, to account for the existence of ground water flow, has been introduced. The variation of fγ has been obtained as a function of hydraulic gradient (i) for different values of soil frictional angle. The magnitude of fγ reduces continuously with an increase in the value of i.

A droplet introduced in an external convective flow field exhibits significant multimodal shape oscillations depending upon the intensity of the aerodynamic forcing. In this paper, a theoretical model describing the temporal evolution of normal modes of the droplet shape is developed. The fluid is assumed to be weakly viscous and Newtonian. The convective flow velocity, which is assumed to be incompressible and inviscid, is incorporated in the model through the normal stress condition at the droplet surface and the equation of motion governing the dynamics of each mode is derived. The coupling between the external flow and the droplet is approximated to be a one-way process, i.e., the external flow perturbations effect the droplet shape oscillations and the droplet oscillation itself does not influence the external flow characteristics. The shape oscillations of the droplet with different fluid properties under different unsteady flow fields were simulated. For a pulsatile external flow, the frequency spectra of the normal modes of the droplet revealed a dominant response at the resonant frequency, in addition to the driving frequency and the corresponding harmonics. At driving frequencies sufficiently different from the resonant frequency of the prolate-oblate oscillation mode of the droplet, the oscillations are stable. But at resonance the oscillation amplitude grows in time leading to breakup depending upon the fluid viscosity. A line vortex advecting past the droplet, simulated as an isotropic jump in the far field velocity, leads to the resonant excitation of the droplet shape modes if and only if the time taken by the vortex to cross the droplet is less than the resonant period of the P-2 mode of the droplet. A train of two vortices interacting with the droplet is also analysed. It shows clearly that the time instant of introduction of the second vortex with respect to the droplet shape oscillation cycle is crucial in determining the amplitude of oscillation. We report the synthesis as well as structural and physical properties of the bulk polycrystalline FeTe and FeTe0.5Se0.5 compounds. These samples are synthesised by the solid state-reaction method via vacuum encapsulation. Both studied compounds are crystallized in a tetragonal phase with space group P4/nmm. The parent FeTe compound shows an anomaly in resistivity measurement at around 78 K, which is due to the structural change along with a magnetic phase transition. The superconductivity in the FeTe0.5Se0.5 sample at 13 K is confirmed by the resistivity measurements. DC magnetisation along with an isothermal (M-H) loop shows that FeTe0.5Se0.5 possesses bulk superconductivity. The upper critical field is estimated through resistivity rho (T,H) measurements using Gingzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is above 50 T with 50 % resistivity drop criterion. The origin of the resistive transition broadening under magnetic field is investigated by thermally activated flux flow. The magnetic field dependence of the activation energy of the flux motion is discussed.

The recrystallization behaviour of cold-rolled nanocrystalline (nc) nickel has been studied at temperatures between 573 and 1273 K using bulk texture measurements and electron back-scattered diffraction. The texture in nc nickel is different from that of its microcrystalline counterpart, consisting of a strong Goss (G) and rotated Goss (RG) components at 773 K instead of the typical cube component. The texture evolution in nc Ni has been attributed to the prior deformation textures and nucleation advantage of G and RG grains.

The steady mixed convection flow and heat transfer from an exponentially stretching vertical surface in a quiescent Maxwell fluid in the presence of magnetic field, viscous dissipation and Joule heating have been studied. The stretching velocity, surface temperature and magnetic field are assumed to have specific exponential function forms for the existence of the local similarity solution. The coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations governing the local similarity flow and heat transfer have been solved numerically by Chebyshev finite difference method. The influence of the buoyancy parameter, viscous dissipation, relaxation parameter of Maxwell fluid, magnetic field and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer has been considered in detail. The Nusselt number increases significantly with the Prandtl number, but the skin friction coefficient decreases. The Nusselt number slightly decreases with increasing viscous dissipation parameter, but the skin friction coefficient slightly increases. Maxwell fluid reduces both skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number, whereas buoyancy force enhances them.

Ligational behaviour of (E)-2-amino-N'-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene]benzohydrazide (Aheb) towards later 3d metal ionscopper(II), cobalt(II), manganese(II), zinc(II), cadmium(II) and nickel(IV)] has been studied. Their structures have been elucidated on the basis of spectral (IR, H-1 NMR, UV-Vis, EPR and FAB-mass), elemental analyses, conductance measurements, magnetic moments, and thermal studies. During complexation Ni(II) ion has got oxidized to Ni(IV). The changes in the bond parameters of the ligand on complexation has been discussed by comparing the crystal structure of the ligand with that of its Ni(IV) complex. The X-ray single crystal analysis of Ni(aheb)(2)]Cl-2 center dot 4H(2)O has confirmed an octahedral geometry around the metal ion. EPR spectra of the Cu(II) complex in polycrystalline state at room (300 K) and liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) were recorded and their salient features are reported. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. HfO2 thin films deposited on Si substrate using electron beam evaporation, are evaluated for back-gated graphene transistors. The amount of O-2 flow rate, during vaporation is optimized for 35 nm thick HfO2 films, to achieve the best optical, chemical and electrical properties. It has been observed that with increasing oxygen flow rate, thickness of the films increased and refractive index decreased due to increase in porosity resulting from the scattering of the evaporant. The films deposited at low O-2 flow rates (1 and 3 SCCM) show better optical and compositional properties. The effects of post-deposition annealing and post-metallization annealing in forming gas ambience (FGA) on the optical and electrical properties of the films have been analyzed. The film deposited at 3 SCCM O-2 flow rate shows the best properties as measured on MOS capacitors. To evaluate the performance of device properties, back-gated bilayer graphene transistors on HfO2 films deposited at two O-2 flow rates of 3 and 20 SCCM have been fabricated and characterized. The transistor with HfO2 film deposited at 3 SCCM O-2 flow rate shows better electrical properties consistent with the observations on MOS capacitor structures. This suggests that an optimum oxygen pressure is necessary to get good quality films for high performance devices.

In this paper, a numerical investigation is performed to study the mixed convective flow and heat transfer characteristics past a square cylinder in cross flow at incidence. Utilizing air (Pr = 0.71) as an operating fluid, computations are carried out at a representative Reynolds number (Re) of 100. Angles of incidences are varied as, 0 degrees <= alpha <= 45 degrees. Effect of superimposed positive and negative cross-flow buoyancy is brought about by varying the Richardson number (RI) in the range -1.0 <= Ri <= 1.0. The detail features of flow topology and heat transport are analyzed critically for different angles of incidences. The thermo fluidic forces acting on the cylinder during mixed convection are captured in terms of the drag (C-D), lift (C-L), and moment (C-M) coefficients. The results show that the lateral width of the cylinder wake reduces with increasing alpha and the isotherms spread out far wide. In the range 0 degrees < alpha < 45 degrees, C-D reduces with increasing Ri. The functional dependence of C-M with Ri reveals a linear relationship. Thermal boundary layer thickness reduces with increasing angle of incidences. The global rate of heat transfer from the cylinder increases with increasing alpha. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The influence of the flow rule on the bearing capacity of strip foundations placed on sand was investigated using a new kinematic approach of upper-bound limit analysis. The method of stress characteristics was first used to find the mechanism of the failure and to compute the stress field by using the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion. Once the failure mechanism had been established, the kinematics of the plastic deformation was established, based on the requirements of the upper-bound limit theorem. Both associated and nonassociated plastic flows were considered, and the bearing capacity was obtained by equating the rate of external plastic work to the rate of the internal energy dissipation for both smooth and rough base foundations. The results obtained from the analysis were compared with those available from the literature. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.
