Recent experimental data for fully differential cross sections have been compared to various continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state models without much success, despite good agreement with double-differential cross sections. A four-body model is formulated here and results are presented both when the internuclear potential is omitted and when it is included. They are compared with recent experimental data for fully differential cross sections for 3.6 MeV/u Au-P(Z)++He collisions, Z(P)=24,53.

Simple electron capture processes are studied using an orthonormal two state continuum-distorted-wave (CDW) basis. The suitability of the basis set is tested by comparing predictions for total and differential cross sections with available experimental data. Overall good agreement is obtained and the authors conclude that a relatively small CDW basis set may be suitable to model a wide variety of low-energy collisions if the members of this extended set are astutely chosen.

We have measured conductance histograms of atomic point contacts made from the noble-transition-metal alloys CuNi, AgPd, and AuPt for a concentration ratio of 1:1. For all alloys these histograms at low-bias voltage (below 300 mV) resemble those of the noble metals, whereas at high bias (above 300 mV) they resemble those of the transition metals. We interpret this effect as a change in the composition of the point contact with bias voltage. We discuss possible explanations in terms of electromigration and differential diffusion induced by current heating.

Polar photodissociation of a set of bromo-chloro-alkanes in the vicinity of the Br 3d core edge has been observed for the first time. It is shown that negative photoion spectroscopy is a powerful tool for investigating the various decay mechanisms of core-excited molecules. Analysis of these results indicates that the observed polar photodissociation arises from two competing spectator Auger decay processes in which the molecule can dissociate either before or after the core hole relaxation.

Polar photodissociation of CFnCl4-n (n=0-2) has been studied using synchrotron radiation within the energy range 195-217 eV. The first observations of negative photoion fragments from these molecules after core excitation are reported. In addition to observing a number of previously known resonances two additional resonant states, just above the Cl 2p ionization limit, are observed and play an important role in the polar photodissociation process. The difficulties in identifying these above threshold spin-split features using negative photoion spectroscopy are discussed.

Two major signaling pathways, those triggered by estrogen (E(2)) and by the Wnt family, interact in the breast to cause growth and differentiation. The estrogen receptors ER(alpha) and ER(beta) are activated by binding E(2) and act as ligand-dependent transcription factors. The effector for the Wnt family is the Tcf family of transcription factors. Both sets of transcription factors recognize discrete but different nucleotide sequences in the promoters of their target genes. By using transient transfections of reporter constructs for the osteopontin and thymidine kinase promoters in rat mammary cells, we show that Tcf-4 antagonizes and Tcf-1 stimulates the effects of activated ER/E(2). For mutants of the former promoter, the stimulatory effects of ER(alpha)/E(2) can be made to be dependent on Tcf-1, and for the latter promoter the effects of the T cell factors (TCFs) are dependent on ER/E(2). Direct interaction between ERs and Tcfs either at the Tcf/ER(alpha)-binding site on the DNA or in the absence of DNA is established by gel retardation assays or by coimmunoprecipitation/biosensor methods, respectively. These results show that the two sets of transcription factors can interact directly, the interaction between ERs and Tcf-4 being antagonistic and that between ERs and Tcf-1 being synergistic on the activity of the promoters employed. Since Tcf-4 is the major Tcf family member in the breast, it is suggested that the antagonistic interaction is normally dominant in vivo in this tissue.

It is now well established that energetic electron emission, nonsequential ionization, and high harmonic generation, produced during the interaction of intense, femtosecond laser pulses with atoms (and atomic positive ions), can be explained by invoking rescattering of the active electron in the laser field, the so-called rescattering mechanism. In contrast for negative ions, the role of rescattering has not been established experimentally. By irradiating F- ions with ultrashort laser pulses, F+ ion yields as a function of intensity for both linearly and circularly polarized light have been measured. We find that, at intensities well below saturation for F+ production by sequential ionization, there is a small but significant enhancement in the yield for the case of linearly polarized light, providing the first clear experimental evidence for the existence of the rescattering mechanism in negative ions.

Molecules bonded between two metal contacts form the simplest possible molecular devices. Coupled by the molecule, the left and right contact-based states form symmetric and antisymmetric pairs near the Fermi level. We relate the size of the resulting energy splitting DeltaE to the symmetry and degree of delocalization of the coupling molecular orbital. Qualitative trends in molecular conductances are then estimated from the variations in DeltaE. We examine benzenedithiol and other molecules of interest in transport. An analysis on the conductance of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNT's) is presented. Recent experiment indicated that MWNT's are good quantum conductors. Our theory shows that tunneling current between states on different walls of a defect-free, infinitely long MWNT is vanishingly small in general, which leads to the quantization of the conductance of the MWNT's. With a reasonable simple model, we explicitly show that the conductance of a capped MWNT can be determined by the outermost wall for an infinitely long nanotube. We apply the theory to finite MWNT's and estimate the generic interwall conductance to be negligible compared to the intrawall ballistic conductance.

We report calculations of the transport properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes based on a scattering-theoretic approach that takes into account scattering within each tube, between tubes, and at the metal contacts. We find that only the outer tube contributes to the conductance, as has been implied by experiments. Referring to experiments performed with liquid-metal contacts, we also explain why the measured conductance is close to an integer number of conductance quanta, when the tubes are immersed in the liquid metal for several hundreds of nanometers and is not an integer when they are immersed for only a few nanometers. Finally, we propose that the observed conductance of only one quantum
