As an example for the representation of glaciers using orthophoto maps the new map "Langtaler Ferner 1971" is presented. The orthophoto map shows the glacier "Langtaler Ferner" in the Oetztal Alps (Austria) on August 18, 1971. Apart from a description of the map production and a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of such ortho- photo maps for the representation of glacierized areas, the stage of the "Langtaler Ferner" at the time of the ftight is described. A comparison with some data of previollsly published maps is also included.

The influence of applying European default traffic values to the making of a noise map was evaluated in a typical environment like Palma de Mallorca. To assess these default traffic values, a first model has been created and compared with measured noise levels. Subsequently a second traffic model, improving the input data used for the first one, has been created and validated according to the deviations. Different methodologies were also examined for collecting model input data that would be of higher quality, by analysing the improvement generated in the reduction in the uncertainty of the noise map introduced by the road traffic noise emission

When mapping is formulated in a Bayesian framework, the need of specifying a prior for the environment arises naturally. However, so far, the use of a particular structure prior has been coupled to working with a particular representation. We describe a system that supports inference with multiple priors while keeping the same dense representation. The priors are rigorously described by the user in a domain-specific language. Even though we work very close to the measurement space, we are able to represent structure constraints with the same expressivity as methods based on geometric primitives. This approach allows the intrinsic degrees of freedom of the environment’s shape to be recovered. Experiments with simulated and real data sets will be presented

Precise modeling of the program heap is fundamental for understanding the behavior of a program, and is thus of signiflcant interest for many optimization applications. One of the fundamental properties of the heap that can be used in a range of optimization techniques is the sharing relationships between the elements in an array or collection. If an analysis can determine that the memory locations pointed to by different entries of an array (or collection) are disjoint, then in many cases loops that traverse the array can be vectorized or transformed into a thread-parallel versión. This paper introduces several novel sharing properties over the concrete heap and corresponding abstractions to represent them. In conjunction with an existing shape analysis technique, these abstractions allow us to precisely resolve the sharing relations in a wide range of heap structures (arrays, collections, recursive data structures, composite heap structures) in a computationally efflcient manner. The effectiveness of the approach is evaluated on a set of challenge problems from the JOlden and SPECjvm98 suites. Sharing information obtained from the analysis is used to achieve substantial thread-level parallel speedups.

We study dynamics of the bistable logistic map with delayed feedback, under the influence of white Gaussian noise and periodic modulation applied to the variable. This system may serve as a model to describe population dynamics under finite resources in noisy environment with seasonal fluctuations. While a very small amount of noise has no effect on the global structure of the coexisting attractors in phase space, an intermediate noise totally eliminates one of the attractors. Slow periodic modulation enhances the attractor annihilation.

This paper introduces a road map for ICTs (Information and communication technologies) supporting planning, operation and management of energy systems in smart cities. The road map summarises different elements that form energy systems in cities and proposes research and technical development (RTD) and innovation activities for the development and innovation of ICTs for holistic design, planning and operation of energy systems. In addition, synergies with other ICT systems for smart cities are considered. There are four main target groups for the road map: 1) citizen; 2) building sector; 3) energy sector; and 4) municipality level. As an example for enabling active participation of citizens, the road map proposes how ICT can enable citizens? involvement among others into building design. The building sector roadmap proposes how ICTs can support the planning of buildings and renovations in the future, as well as how to manage building energy systems. The energy sector road map focuses on city?s energy systems and their planning and management, including e.g. demand side management, management of different district level energy systems, energy performance validation and management, energy data models, and smarter use of open energy data. Moreover, the municipality level road map proposes among others ICTs for better integration of city systems and city planning enabling maximised energy efficiency. In addition, one road map section suggests development needs related to open energy data, including among others the use of energy data and the development and harmonisation of energy data models. The road map has been assembled in the READY4SmartCities project (funded by EU 7th Framework Programme), which focuses on the energy system at the city level, consisting of centralised energy systems and connections to the national level energy grids, as well as interconnections to the neighbourhood and building level energy systems.

La tesis se centra en el estudio, descripción y análisis del libro publicado por el arquitecto británico George Edmund Street en 1865, bajo el título Some Account of Gothic Architecture in Spain. ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on the study, description and analysis of the book published by the British architect George Edmund Street in 1865, under the title Some Account of Gothic Architecture in Spain. The book displayed one of the most significant collections of drawings on Spanish Gothic Architecture made in the nineteenth century, and therefore was a first reference for its study, until well into the twentieth century. The book included 107 engravings, the surveying of various types of buildings with perspectives and details, and 25 sheets containing 45 ground plans of churches and cloisters, many of them new and published for the first time. Thanks to several summer campaigns in the north half of the country, the almost unexplored -from a scholar point of view- medieval Spanish architecture was eventually revealed. This fact lead to an intriguing question that is at the origin of this research: how could Street in a few trips lay the foundations of the history of Spanish Gothic that until then Spanish scholars had not been able to define? This thesis begins inscribing this Street's work in his cultural context. A brief review of his biography and professional and theoretical positions has been seen as necessary. Also his debts and relationship with the most representative people involved in the study of Gothic architecture, like Robert Willis, William Whewell, Augustus Pugin, or George G. Scott are discussed. Special attention has been paid, taken into account his relevant role in the Gothic Revival, to understand the significance of his interest in continental Gothic architecture. These preliminary chapters are followed by a review of role of drawing as a tool for Architectural travellers in their Tours in search of the Gothic architecture. The influence of the Royal Academy and its academicians, (among which was Street) and his educational background are here tackled. Eventually this thesis enters into the study of the architectural drawings Street made during his continental architectural journeys, which is followed by a detailed description and analysis of the Spanish ones: his methods, his technique, and the new features which were a novelty in the Spanish context are explored. Also in this thesis is carried out some comparative studies thanks to a previous exhaustive gathering of Street's sketches and original drawings, most of which are preserved in the RIBA archives. Their final versions, drawings of the same buildings from other contemporary draughtsman and pictures of their current state are compared with them. This thesis makes clear why and how Street thanks to his theoretical back-ground and portraying skills could realize what have passed unnoticed by contemporary Spanish scholars (construction, genealogy of forms, dating of periods) allowing him to find the proper place of the Spanish architecture in the history and the map of European Gothic architecture.

Recent studies of corticofugal modulation of auditory information processing indicate that cortical neurons mediate both a highly focused positive feedback to subcortical neurons “matched” in tuning to a particular acoustic parameter and a widespread lateral inhibition to “unmatched” subcortical neurons. This cortical function for the adjustment and improvement of subcortical information processing is called egocentric selection. Egocentric selection enhances the neural representation of frequently occurring signals in the central auditory system. For our present studies performed with the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), we hypothesized that egocentric selection adjusts the frequency map of the inferior colliculus (IC) according to auditory experience based on associative learning. To test this hypothesis, we delivered acoustic stimuli paired with electric leg stimulation to the bat, because such paired stimuli allowed the animal to learn that the acoustic stimulus was behaviorally important and to make behavioral and neural adjustments based on the acquired importance of the acoustic stimulus. We found that acoustic stimulation alone evokes a change in the frequency map of the IC; that this change in the IC becomes greater when the acoustic stimulation is made behaviorally relevant by pairing it with electrical stimulation; that the collicular change is mediated by the corticofugal system; and that the IC itself can sustain the change evoked by the corticofugal system for some time. Our data support the hypothesis.

We have investigated in rat pheochromacytoma PC12 cells the activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinases ERK1 and ERK2 by the mitochondrial uncoupler carbonyl cyanide p-(trifluoromethoxy)phenylhydrazone (FCCP). This treatment slowly decreases ATP levels to 30% of control, whereas the internal calcium level rises very rapidly to 250% of control, derived from internal stores. Tyrosine phosphorylation of ERK1 and ERK2 increases gradually, starting after 5 min of treatment, to reach a maximum at 30 min; the kinase activity reaches 250% when measured after 1 hr of treatment. The drop in ATP levels is slower still. Comparison of the time courses of the rapid rise in cytosolic calcium with the slower increase in ERK1 and ERK2 activation suggests one or more intermediate stages in this pathway. Chelation of cytosolic calcium with dimethyl bis-(o-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid abolished the FCCP-stimulated rise in internal calcium, as well as the tyrosine phosphorylation and the activation of the ERKs. Surprisingly, caffeine, which releases calcium from different internal stores, did not increase the tyrosine phosphorylation and did not activate the ERKs. The FCCP effect on calcium storage may be related to mitochondrial dysfunction in Alzheimer disease, which might result in ineffective buffering of cytosolic calcium that leads to mitogen-activated protein kinase activation and subsequent protein phosphorylations.

This study addresses the extent of divergence in the ascending somatosensory pathways of primates. Divergence of inputs from a particular body part at each successive synaptic step in these pathways results in a potential magnification of the representation of that body part in the somatosensory cortex, so that the representation can be expanded when peripheral input from other parts is lost, as in nerve lesions or amputations. Lesions of increasing size were placed in the representation of a finger in the ventral posterior thalamic nucleus (VPL) of macaque monkeys. After a survival period of 1–5 weeks, area 3b of the somatosensory cortex ipsilateral to the lesion was mapped physiologically, and the extent of the representation of the affected and adjacent fingers was determined. Lesions affecting less than 30% of the thalamic VPL nucleus were without effect upon the cortical representation of the finger whose thalamic representation was at the center of the lesion. Lesions affecting about 35% of the VPL nucleus resulted in a shrinkage of the cortical representation of the finger whose thalamic representation was lesioned, with concomitant expansion of the representations of adjacent fingers. Beyond 35–40%, the whole cortical representation of the hand became silent. These results suggest that divergence of brainstem and thalamocortical projections, although normally not expressed, are sufficiently great to maintain a representation after a major loss of inputs from the periphery. This is likely to be one mechanism of representational plasticity in the cerebral cortex.

The F1 part of the F1FO ATP synthase from Escherichia coli has been crystallized and its structure determined to 4.4-Å resolution by using molecular replacement based on the structure of the beef-heart mitochondrial enzyme. The bacterial F1 consists of five subunits with stoichiometry α3, β3, γ, δ, and ɛ. δ was removed before crystallization. In agreement with the structure of the beef-heart mitochondrial enzyme, although not that from rat liver, the present study suggests that the α and β subunits are arranged in a hexagonal barrel but depart from exact 3-fold symmetry. In the structures of both beef heart and rat-liver mitochondrial F1, less than half of the structure of the γ subunit was seen because of presumed disorder in the crystals. The present electron-density map includes a number of rod-shaped features which appear to correspond to additional α-helical regions within the γ subunit. These suggest that the γ subunit traverses the full length of the stalk that links the F1 and FO parts and makes significant contacts with the c subunit ring of FO.
