This paper outlines the current literature on what is known about the processes by which individuals utilize the Internet for child sexual abuse. First, three ways in which the Internet is utilized are outlined: (1) by dissemination of sexually abusive images of children for personal and/or commercial reasons; (2) by communication with other individuals with a sexual interest in children: and (3) by maintaining and developing online pedophilic networks. Second, content and availability of abusive images are described, and the difficulties faced by criminal justice agencies in both the definition of abusive images and their prohibition is discussed. Third, the potential for offenders to ‘cross-over’ from online offenses to contact sexual victimization of children is examined and placed within a context of various Internet offender typologies that have been developed. Finally, implications of this body of research for law and public policy are considered.

Purpose: – The purpose of this paper is to document the progress made in a specified period and the experience of managers and staff in sustaining the high performance team approach in a plastics factory.

Design/methodology/approach: – Single-case analysis was conducted on data collected through semi-structured interviews and site observations made with two managers and one team of six in a multinational plastics manufacturer (Visy) headquartered in Australia.

Findings: – Based on the authors' experiences and literature review a successful high performance team requires clear targets and efficiency standards, communication, rules of behaviour, continual input of facts and feedback, and last but not least – recognition of successes.

Research limitations/implications: – The findings are based on observations and interviews conducted in one part of a multinational organization in Australia. No follow-up interviews could be undertaken to track the progress.

Originality/value: – No other similar study had been undertaken in this organisation documenting the experiences of a quality improvement team and its interactions with managers. The findings have practical implications for industrial and other kinds of organisations engaged in implementing quality improvements through enhanced teamwork.

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and B-type NP (BNP) are hormones involved in homeostatic control of body fluid and cardiovascular regulation. Both ANP and BNP have been cloned from the heart of mammals, amphibians, and teleost fishes, while an additional cardiac peptide, ventricular NP, has been found in selected species of teleost fish. However, in chicken, BNP is the primary cardiac peptide identified thus far. In contrast, the types of NP/s present in the reptilian heart are unknown, representing a considerable gap in our understanding of NP evolution. In the present study, we cloned and sequenced a BNP cDNA from the atria of representative species of reptile, including crocodile, lizard, snake, and tortoise. In addition, we cloned BNP from the pigeon atria. The reptilian and pigeon BNP cDNAs had ATTTA repeats in the 3′ untranslated region, as observed in all vertebrate BNP mRNAs. A high sequence homology was evident when comparing reptile and pigeon preproBNP with the previously identified chicken preproBNP. In particular, the predicted mature BNP-29 was identical between crocodile, tortoise, and chicken, with pigeon having a single amino acid substitution; lizard and snake BNP had seven and nine substitutions, respectively. Furthermore, an ANP cDNA could only be cloned from the tortoise atria. Since ANP was not isolated from the heart of any non-chelonian reptile and appears to be absent in birds, we propose that the ANP gene has been lost after branching of the turtles in the amniote line. This data provides new avenues for research on NP function in reptiles.

In desert rodents, the production of concentrated urine is essential for survival in xeric environments in order to conserve water. Reabsorption of water in the kidney is dependent on large osmotic gradients in the renal medulla. This causes the renal cells to be bathed in a hypertonic extracellular fluid that can compromise cellular function. In response to hypertonicity, kidney cells accumulate compatible, non-ionic osmolytes that lower the ionic strength within the cells to isotonic levels by replacing intracellular ionic electrolytes. The tonicity-responsive enhancer binding protein (TonEBP) is a transcription factor that regulates the expression of genes that encode proteins that catalyse the accumulation of compatible osmolytes. We investigated the expression of TonEBP mRNA and protein and compatible osmolyte genes in the Spinifex hopping mouse, Notomys alexis, an Australian desert rodent that produces a highly concentrated urine. TonEBP mRNA expression was unchanged after 3 days of water deprivation but was significantly increased after 7 and 14 days of water deprivation. Immunohistochemistry showed that during water deprivation TonEBP had translocated from the cytoplasm into the nucleus of cells in the renal medulla and papilla. In addition, 3, 7 and 14 days of water deprivation caused a significant increase in aldose reductase (AR), myo-inositol (SMIT), betaine/GABA (BGT-1) and taurine (TauT) transporter mRNA expression, which is indicative of an increase in TonEBP activity. In desert rodents, TonEBP regulation of gene transcription is probably an important mechanism to protect renal cells in the face of the large corticomedullary gradient that is required to concentrate urine and conserve water.

In this study, the role of nitric oxide (NO) in regulation of the pulmocutaneous vasculature of the toad, Bufo marinus was investigated. In vitro myography demonstrated the presence of a neural NO signaling mechanism in both arteries. Vasodilation induced by nicotine was inhibited by the soluble guanylyl cyclase (GC) inhibitor, 1H-(1,2,4)oxadiazolo(4,3-a)quinoxalin-1-one, and the NO synthase (NOS) inhibitor, Nω-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA). Removal of the endothelium had no significant effect on the vasodilation. Furthermore, pretreatment with N5-(1-imino-3-butenyl)-L-ornithine (vinyl-L-NIO), a more specific inhibitor of neural NOS, caused a significant decrease in the nicotine-induced dilation. In the pulmonary artery only, a combination of L-NNA and the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist, CGRP(8-37), completely blocked the nicotine-induced dilation. In both arteries, the vasodilation was also significantly decreased by glibenclamide, an ATP-sensitive K+ (K+ATP) channel inhibitor. Levcromakalim, a K+ATP channel opener, caused a dilation that was blocked by glibenclamide in both arteries. In the pulmonary artery, NO donor-mediated dilation was significantly decreased by pretreatment with glibenclamide. The physiological data were supported by NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry and immunohistochemistry, which demonstrated NOS in perivascular nerve fibers but not the endothelium of the arteries. These results indicate that the pulmonary and cutaneous arteries of B. marinus are regulated by NO from nitrergic nerves rather than NO released from the endothelium. The nitrergic vasodilation in the arteries appears to be caused, in part, via activation of K+ATP channels. Thus, NO could play an important role in determining pulmocutaneous blood flow and the magnitude of cardiac shunting.

The presence of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and role of nitric oxide (NO) in vascular regulation was investigated in the Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri. No evidence was found for NOS in the endothelium of large and small blood vessels following processing for NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry. However, both NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry and neural NOS immunohistochemistry demonstrated a sparse network of nitrergic nerves in the dorsal aorta, hepatic artery, and branchial arteries, but there were no nitrergic nerves in small blood vessels in tissues. In contrast, nitrergic nerves were found in non-vascular tissues of the lung, gut and kidney. Dual-wire myography was used to determine if NO signalling occurred in the branchial artery of N. forsteri. Both SNP and SIN-1 had no effect on the pre-constricted branchial artery, but the particulate guanylyl cyclase (GC) activator, C-type natriuretic peptide, always caused vasodilation. Nicotine mediated a dilation that was not inhibited by the soluble GC inhibitor, ODQ, or the NOS inhibitor, L-NNA, but was blocked by the cyclooxygenase inhibitor, indomethacin. These data suggest that NO control of the branchial artery is lacking, but that prostaglandins could be endothelial relaxing factors in the vasculature of lungfish.

Issue addressed: Walking for transport can contribute significantly to health enhancing physical activity. We examined the associations of stages of motivational readiness for active transport with perceived barriers and incentives to walking to and from university among students. Methods: Mail-back surveys were completed by 781 students in a regional university in southeast Queensland. They identified one of eight options on motivational readiness for active commuting, which were then classified as: pre-contemplation; contemplation-preparation; or, action-maintenance. Open-ended questions were used to identify relevant barriers and incentives. Logistic regressions were used to examine the barriers and incentives that distinguished between those at different stages of motivational readiness. Results: Barriers most frequently reported were long travel distances, inconvenience and time constraints. Incentives most frequently reported were shorter travel distance, having more time, supportive infrastructure and better security. Those not considering active commuting (pre-contemplation) were significantly more likely to report shorter travel distance as an incentive compared to those in contemplation-preparation. Those in contemplation-preparation were significantly more likely to report lack of motivation, inadequate infrastructure, shorter travel distance and inconvenience as barriers; and, having more time, supportive infrastructure, social support and incentive programs as encouragement. Conclusions: Different barriers and incentives to walking to or from university exist for students in the different stages of motivational readiness for active commuting. Interventions targeted specifically to stage of motivational readiness may be potentially helpful in increasing activity levels, through active transport.

This methods paper outlines the overall design of a community-based multidisciplinary longitudinal study with the intent to stimulate interest and communication from scientists and practitioners studying the role of physical activity in preventive medicine. In adults, lack of regular exercise is a major risk factor in the development of chronic degenerative diseases and is a major contributor to obesity, and now we have evidence that many of our children are not sufficiently active to prevent early symptoms of chronic disease. The lifestyle of our kids (LOOK) study investigates how early physical activity contributes to health and development, utilizing a longitudinal design and a cohort of eight hundred and thirty 7–8-year-old (grade 2) school children followed to age 11–12 years (grade 6), their average family income being very close to that of Australia. We will test two hypotheses, that (a) the quantity and quality of physical activity undertaken by primary school children will influence their psychological and physical health and development; (b) compared with existing practices in primary schools, a physical education program administered by visiting specialists will enhance health and development, and lead to a more positive perception of physical activity. To test the first hypothesis we will monitor all children longitudinally over the 4 years. To test the second we will involve an intervention group of 430 children who receive two 50 min physical education classes every week from visiting specialists and a control group of 400 who continue with their usual primary school physical education with their class-room teachers. At the end of grades 2, 4, and 6 we will measure several areas of health and development including blood risk factors for chronic disease, cardiovascular structure and function, physical fitness, psychological characteristics and perceptions of physical activity, bone structure and strength, motor control, body composition, nutritional intake, influence of teachers and family, and academic performance.

Evidence for the presence of a putative egg-laying (ELH) hormone has been previously described in the black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, so a further investigation was carried out to detect its presence in a range of Decapoda crustaceans prior to a full molecular analysis. The crustaceans were represented by the Australian fresh water yabbie, Cherax destructor, the Australian southern rock lobster, Jasus edwardsii, the snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio, and the blue swimmer crab, Portunus pelagicus. Female cerebral ganglia, ventral nerve cords and gonads were investigated in a comparative study of the distribution of the immunoreactive hormone using immunoenzyme and immunofluorescence techniques. Immunoreactivity was detected in all tissues of interest, and the distribution patterns showed similarity within the four species, as well as that of P. monodon reported in the earlier study. There were minor variations. These data indicate that a putative ELH-like neuropeptide is widespread in crustaceans, and supports its previous identification in a range of molluscs and other invertebrates. Elucidation of the molecular structure of the peptide hormone and its encoding gene, as well as its involvement in spawning behaviour of crustaceans, is now fully under investigation.
