Power transformations in correspondence analysis

Power transformations of positive data tables, prior to applying the correspondence analysis algorithm, are shown to open up a family of methods with direct connections to the analysis of log-ratios. Two variations of this idea are illustrated. The first approach is simply to power the original data and perform a correspondence analysis this method is shown to converge to unweighted log-ratio analysis as the power parameter tends to zero. The second approach is to apply the power transformation to thecontingency ratios, that is the values in the table relative to expected values based on the marginals this method converges to weighted log-ratio analysis, or the spectral map. Two applications are described: first, a matrix of population genetic data which is inherently two-dimensional, and second, a larger cross-tabulation with higher dimensionality, from a linguistic analysis of several books.

É de conhecimento de todos, ou pelo menos daqueles que estão mais atentos às questões de natureza económica, que um dos grandes desafios das empresas nos dias que correm, é garantirem a sua sustentabilidade financeira no longo prazo. Nesse sentido, são várias as estratégias elaboradas pelos responsáveis das diversas empresas, e decisores políticos, no sentido colmatar esta dificuldade. Cabo Verde, como país de Desenvolvimento Médio, muito dependente do exterior, apresenta muitas dificuldades em gerar recursos que garantam a sustentabilidade da sua economia. Como forma de reestruturar e dinamizar a economia e o tecido empresarial nacional, foi reaberta em 2005 a Bolsa de Valores de Cabo Verde. E para retratar o impato positivo da sua reabertura, referir que nesse mesmo ano, a Sociedade Caboverdiana de Tabacos, S.A., realizou na Bolsa de Valores de Cabo Verde, uma Oferta Pública de Venda, que segundo os analístas, foi muito superior a oferta, deixando assim, uma ideia clara de que este, com mais incentivo, tem margem de crescimento. Este trabalho visa numa primeira parte caraterizar o mercado de capitais em Cabo Verde, onde está inserida a Bolsa de Valores Local. Num segundo momento, pretendese fazer uma resenha bibliográfica dos principais métodos de avaliação das empresas e de seguida procurar-se, através de um estudo de caso, a Sociedade Cabo-verdiana de Tabacos, identificar algumas possíveis vantagens provenientes da sua entrada na Bolsa de Valores, mediante a avaliação de alguns indicadores de desempenho da empresa. It is known to all, or at least to those who are more attentive to the matters of economic issues, that one of the biggest problems facing companies today is to ensure their financial sustainability. Accordingly, there are several strategies drawn up by leaders of various companies in order to face this difficulty. Cape Verde, as a medium-developed country, is very dependent on other countries‟ help and has great difficulty in generating resources that guarantee a good and healthy economy. As a way to restructure the economy and minimize some financial problems, in 2005 the Stock Exchange of Cape Verde was reopened, to remedy this deficiency. For one to have a clear idea of the importance of this reopening, we can look at the example of Sociedade Caboverdiana de Tabacos – tobacco national company – that, still in this year, has made a bid on Stock Exchange, which, according to specialists, demonstrated an offer a lot greater than the demand, clearly a sign that this company, has a great margin for growth, if it has more financial incentives. This paper seeks to demonstrate and characterize the capital market of Cape Verde, where we will find the National Stock Exchange. Secondly, we intend to make a bibliographical research of the main assessment methods companies use here, to finally, through a case study, at SCT, identify possible advantages that might come from being listed in the Stock Exchange, through the analysis of some performance indicators from this company.

Iowa Budget Report, Building on our Progress: Protecting our Priorities, 2009

To Members of the 82nd General Assembly, As we begin the second year of our Administration, we are pleased to submit the Fiscal Year 2009 budget for the State of Iowa pursuant to Iowa Code Section 8.21 and our constitutional authority. This budget recognizes the progress that we began last year with improvements in education, economic development, energy independence, and health care; provides funding for new policy initiatives in these areas; and is based on fiscally sound budget practices. Building on last year’s accomplishments, our Fiscal Year 2009 General Fund budget proposes an additional $75 million for increasing teachers’ salaries as part of our goal to move Iowa closer to the national average. We lay the foundation for student achievement by recommending $32.1 million for pre-school education, and we also propose $177.5 million in total for community colleges and $726.2 million in total for Regents universities. To make our State more energy independent, our General Fund budget appropriates the second-year funding of $25 million for the new Iowa Power Fund. The newly established Office of Energy Independence will soon start making awards from the Power Fund. Apart from the budget, we will be making several proposals to implement the new State energy plan. We have pledged to expand the number of Iowans who have health-care coverage. As a result, we are recommending additional funding for enrollment growth in the State Children Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). These additional funds will help the State provide coverage for another 25 percent of children who are eligible but not yet enrolled in hawk-i and the Iowa Medicaid Program. To protect the safety of Iowans, we are recommending issuance of revenue bonds for approximately $260 million in net proceeds to build a new state penitentiary in Ft. Madison, renovate and expand the Women’s Correctional Institution at Mitchellville, upgrade kitchen facilities at the Rockwell City and Mt. Pleasant Correctional Institutions, and expand Community-Based Correctional Facilities in Ottumwa, Sioux City, Waterloo, and Des Moines. Additionally, we are including funding for developing a prototype program for providing parolees and low-risk offenders with mental health and drug abuse treatment and educational services to help them make a crime-free re-entry into our communities. As part of this Capitals Budget, we also propose using $20 million for the State’s matching share for building new facilities at the Iowa Veterans Home. Iowa Budget Report iv Fiscal Year 2009 Importantly, our budget continues to fully fund our State’s Reserve Funds to help buffer Iowa from any future economic downturn. We recommend reimbursing $78.2 million to the Property Tax Credit Fund as part of our multi-year proposal to correct bad budgeting practices and eventually restore $160.0 million to this Fund. To provide more transparency, we are transferring operational expenditures in the Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Fund to the General Fund and expenditures from the Endowment for Healthy Iowans and Healthy Iowans Tobacco Trust Funds to the General Fund. We believe that Iowa has charted a new course of becoming energy independent, providing quality pre-school education, recognizing the importance of our teachers, and providing greater health coverage for children. Our Fiscal Year 2009 budget and policy priorities reflect our continuing faith in Iowa’s ability to be the best state in the nation. Should possible recurrence of disease contraindicate liver transplantation in patients with end-stage alveolar echinococcosis? A 20-year follow-up study.

Liver transplantation (LT) is currently contraindicated in patients with residual or metastatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE) lesions. We evaluated the long-term course of such patients who underwent LT and were subsequently treated with benzimidazoles. Clinical, imaging, serological, and therapeutic data were collected from 5 patients with residual/recurrent AE lesions who survived for more than 15 years. Since 2004, [(18) F]-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) images were available, and the levels of serum antibodies (Abs) against Echinococcus multilocularis-recombinant antigens were evaluated. Median survival time after LT was 21 years. These patients were from a prospective cohort of 23 patients with AE who underwent LT: 5 of 8 patients with residual/recurrent AE and 4 of 9 patients without residual/recurrent AE were alive in September 2009. High doses of immunosuppressive drugs, the late introduction of therapy with benzimidazoles, its withdrawal due to side effects, and nonadherence to this therapy adversely affected the prognosis. Anti-Em2(plus) and anti-rEm18 Ab levels and standard FDG-PET enabled the efficacy of therapy on the growth of EA lesions to be assessed. However, meaningful variations in Ab levels were observed below diagnostic cutoff values; and in monitoring AE lesions, images of FDG uptake taken 3 hours after its injection were more sensitive than images obtained 1 hour after its injection. In conclusion, benzimidazoles can control residual/recurrent AE lesions after LT. Using anti-rEm18 or anti-Em2(plus) Ab levels and the delayed acquisition of FDG-PET images can improve the functional assessment of disease activity. The potential recurrence of disease, especially in patients with residual or metastatic AE lesions, should not be regarded as a contraindication to LT when AE is considered to be lethal in the short term.

L'individu confronté au diagnostic de cancer subit un bouleversement brutal de ses repères et de ses habitudes. La maladie représente une menace pour son équilibre de vie et sa stabilité sociale. Sa capacité à faire face et à opérer différents remaniements dans sa façon d'être au monde et d'envisager l'avenir est en partie déterminée par ses ressources personnelles. Toutefois, le soutien émotionnel peut également représenter un moyen privilégié de donner du sens à cette expérience singulière qu'est la maladie. La reconstruction narrative dans un cadre soutenant, caractérisé par une écoute bienveillante, offre au patient la possibilité de reconnaître sa souffrance comme partie intégrante de lui-même. Un récit de vie qui intègre la maladie lui permet de se réapproprier son histoire. Cette démarche nécessite de la part du thérapeute une disponibilité psychique et temporelle et la capacité de soutenir le patient dans un processus de liaison à travers les différentes étapes de la maladie. The individual facing the diagnosis of cancer is subjected to abrupt changes with regard to his inner world, his life, habits and social relationships. The patient's capacity to cope, to integrate changes in the way of living and to face the future is determined by his personal resources. However, psychological support may also be an important mean to search for and find sense to the singular experience of the illness. The narrative reconstruction within a supportive setting provides the patient a possibility to recognise his sufferance as an integral part of himself. A life narrative, which integrates the illness, allows the patient to re-appropriate his history again. Such a therapeutic project necessitates from the therapist a psychological and temporal disponibility and a capacity to create links all along the different stages of the disease.

Evolution in subdivided plant populations: concepts, recent advances and future directions.

SUMMARY: Research into the evolution of subdivided plant populations has long involved the study of phenotypic variation across plant geographic ranges and the genetic details underlying that variation. Genetic polymorphism at different marker loci has also allowed us to infer the long- and short-term histories of gene flow within and among populations, including range expansions and colonization-extinction dynamics. However, the advent of affordable genome-wide sequences for large numbers of individuals is opening up new possibilities for the study of subdivided populations. In this review, we consider what the new tools and technologies may allow us to do. In particular, we encourage researchers to look beyond the description of variation and to use genomic tools to address new hypotheses, or old ones afresh. Because subdivided plant populations are complex structures, we caution researchers away from adopting simplistic interpretations of their data, and to consider the patterns they observe in terms of the population genetic processes that have given rise to them; here, the genealogical framework of the coalescent will continue to be conceptually and analytically useful.

Running versus strength-based warm-up : acute effects on isometric knee extension function

This study investigated the influence of two warm-up protocols on neural and contractile parameters of knee extensors. A series of neuromuscular tests including voluntary and electrically evoked contractions were performed before and after running- (R (WU); slow running, athletic drills, and sprints) and strength-based (S (WU); bilateral 90 degrees back squats, Olympic lifting movements and reactivity exercises) warm ups (duration ~40 min) in ten-trained subjects. The estimated overall mechanical work was comparable between protocols. Maximal voluntary contraction torque (+15.6%; P < 0.01 and +10.9%; P < 0.05) and muscle activation (+10.9 and +12.9%; P < 0.05) increased to the same extent after R (WU) and S (WU), respectively. Both protocols caused a significant shortening of time to contract (-12.8 and -11.8% after R (WU) and S (WU); P < 0.05), while the other twitch parameters did not change significantly. Running- and strength-based warm ups induce similar increase in knee extensors force-generating capacity by improving the muscle activation. Both protocols have similar effects on M-wave and isometric twitch characteristics.
