Política e identidade cultural na América Latina

O volume é o resultado de um seminário internacional realizado na UNESP no âmbito de um programa de formação redes de historiadores latino-americanos. O conteúdo se desenvolve em torno de duas questões fundamentais: as identidades culturais e a política latino-americana durante o século XX. A identidade cultural é tratada sob diversos ângulos, que vão do exame das representações da nação e do continente latino-americano, ao estudo da produção artística e dos meios de comunicação de massa. Por sua vez, os fenômenos políticos, as relações internacionais e a economia são estudados em conexão com o problema das identidades coletivas na America Latina. Os textos encontram-se organizados em três partes: Intelectuais e Identidades; Cultura Visual e Produção de Imaginários; Processo Político e Relações Internacionais no Cone Sul

De palanque: as crônicas de Artur Azevedo no diário de Notícias (1885/1886)

Esequiel Gomes da Silva reúne neste livro vários textos jornalísticos do maranhense Artur Azevedo, considerado o primeiro grande dramaturgo brasileiro. O período focado por Silva foi um dos mais fecundos na carreira jornalística do escritor, que através de suas crônicas traçou, com verve e simpático distanciamento, um amplo painel da sociedade e da vida política e cultural do Rio de Janeiro, a efervescente capital imperial. O livro traz, além das crônicas publicadas nesse período - transcritas integralmente, com ortografia atualizada - uma percuciente análise sobre a produção intelectual de Artur Azevedo, enfatizando, porém, sua atuação enquanto crítico de jornais. A obra ainda oferece uma caracterização geral das crônicas e se debruça sobre o processo de elaboração formal e sobre os recursos de comicidade utilizados pelo escritor. O trabalho também possibilita compreender como essas crônicas serviram de ferramenta de intervenção artística, cultural, política e social, terminando por mostrar um Artur Azevedo surpreendentemente engajado nos assuntos do país e empenhado no fortalecimento da cultura brasileira

Evaluation of the Capillary Blood Glucose Self-monitoringProgram

OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the structure, process and results of the Capillary Blood Glucose Self-monitoring Program in a Brazilian city. METHOD: epidemiological, cross-sectional study. The methodological framework of Donabedian was used to construct indicators of structure, process and outcome. A random sample (n = 288) of users enrolled and 96 health professionals who worked in the program was studied. Two questionnaires were used that were constructed for this study, one for professionals and one for users, both containing data for the evaluation of structure, process and outcome. Anthropometric measures and laboratory results were collected by consulting the patients' health records. The analysis involved descriptive statistics. RESULTS: most of the professionals were not qualified to work in the program and were not knowledgeable about the set of criteria for patient registration. None of the patients received complete and correct orientations about the program and the percentage with skills to perform conducts autonomously was 10%. As regards the result indicators, 86.4% of the patients and 81.3% of the professionals evaluated the program positively. CONCLUSION: the evaluation indicators designed revealed that one of the main objectives of the program, self-care skills, has not been achieved.

A tradução de Invisible Man, de Ralph Ellison: o jogo entre racialidade e integracionismo

Relating the surface of a translated text to discourse is one of the focuses in the connection between Translation Studies and African- -American literature. In this respect, “Invisible Man”, by Ralph Ellison, and its Brazilian translation, by Márcia Serra, present themselves as material for analyzing contexts which evoke a sense of community and racial identity. Therefore, this paper centers precisely upon nuances in meaning of the linguistic displays of bonding and race. It could be noticed that these aspects were less marked in the translation, whereas the integrationist project featured in the novel was to a certain extent rewritten in words that called forth a sense of racial dichotomy. Thus, the translation displays at once the non-racialized perspective peculiar to the Brazilian view of race and assumptions in regard to the perspective of the African-American Other on race relations.

The Invisible Blackness of Harryette Mullen's Poetry: Writing, Miscegenation, and What Remains to Be Seen

This essay addresses the poetics of Harryette Mullen, an awarded African-American female poet whose work questions the boundaries that shape the expectations for accessible intelligibility in African-American literature. Mullen’s poems skirt the edges of intelligibility by going beyond the expectations for a visible/intelligible form of language that would embrace the experience of blackness. I argue that writing in Mullen’s poetry works as process of miscegenation by playing on the illegibility of blackness, beyond a visible line of distinction between what is or should be considered part of blackness itself, which engages new forms of reflection on poetry as a politically meaningful tool for rethinking the role of the black (female) poet within the black diaspora.
