Mrs. J. Palmer Lockwood Journal - Accession 34 - M10 (20)

The Mrs. J. Palmer Lockwood Journal consists of a 76 page journal kept by Mrs. J. Palmer (Leize) Lockwood concerning how the poem Carolina by Henry Timrod became the South Carolina state song. There is also a description of how Mrs. Lockwood worked to popularize the song, three copies of Timrod’s poem, and a copy of a poem titled “Carolina” by Mary Frances Wickliffe, Winthrop faculty member from 1895 to 1919.

The Leila Russell Papers consist of a journal kept by Russell which formed the basis for a report to the Southern Education Board, describing conditions at various school houses in Anderson County, South Carolina. There are also photographs of school houses in Anderson and Marion Counties.

Bessie Harper Radio Talk Records - Accession 26 - M8 (18)

The Bessie Harper Radio Talk records consist of a draft of a radio talk on "Family Finance" that was broadcast over WIS, Columbia, South Carolina on Monday, January 25th, 1932. Bessie Harper served as chairman of the American Home Department of the South Carolina Federation of Women's Club (SCFWC). The aim of the talk is to educate families how to budget their finances and to plan their expenses which was particularly important when this talk was given in 1932 during the Great Depression. This talk offers a glimpse into families' attempts to cope with the new economic reality of life during the Great Depression.

William Joseph Miller Civil War Reminiscence - Accession 41 - M16 (26)

The collection consists of a photocopy of a typescript account of William Joseph Miller’s experiences as a soldier in the Confederate army, 12th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers detailing his role in campaigns in South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. Also included is a genealogy of William Joseph Miller’s family with his dates of birth and death and a photograph of Miller.

Battle Of King's Mountain History - Accession 44 - M19 (29)

Written by Helen Deane Chandler, the history describes the battle fought in York County, South Carolina on October 7, 1780, gives brief accounts of previous celebrations of the battle, contains illustrations showing the battlefield and monuments, and has information concerning the 150th anniversary celebration that took place in 1930.

Alexander Samuel Salley Letters - Accession 45 - M20 (30)

The Alexander Samuel Salley Letters consist of a 1930 letter concerning Salley’s comments on the exchange between South and North Carolina of two strips of land that led to the King’s Mountain becoming a part of South Carolina in 1772, eight years before the battle and a 1921 letter in which Salley addresses various historical songs of South Carolina and his reputation as an historian.

Miller Family Papers - Accession 204 - M90 (115-116)

The Miller Family Papers consist of notes on the Miller, Cathcart, and Roddey families, genealogical data on the Lindsay, Stewart, and McCaughrin families, and an American Civil War reminiscence of William Joseph Miller entitled, “My Experience as a Soldier in the Confederate Army. Written at the Request of Barnette, My Only Living Daughter.” Miller served in the 12th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers of the Confederate Army.

The Thomas Spratt Memoir consists of a typescript account titled Recollections of the Spratt Family, detailing the history of the Spratt family of York County, South Carolina from the arrival in America of Thomas Spratt from County Down, Ireland, in 1740 to 1876.

The Susie Norwood McKeown Papers consist of correspondence, lists, statements and other papers mainly concerned with her work on the nominating executive committees of South Carolina Library Association.

Marion Allan Wright Papers - Accession 197

The Marion Allan Wright Papers consist of correspondence, a journal, autobiographical writings, bibliographies, biographical data, essays, speeches, book reviews, short stories, poems, letters to the editor, oral history transcripts and other papers. Subjects include the death penalty, the civil rights movement, civil liberties, libraries in South Carolina and politics. Correspondents include R. Beverly Herbert, L. Mendel Rivers, J, William Fulbright, Sam Ervin, Jr., Reverend James P. Dees, Preston Wright (Wright's brother) and other relatives. The City of Aiken Postcards collection consists of five unused and undated postcards depicting scenes from Aiken, SC including Hitchcock Woods, Polo at Aiken, The Race Tracks at Aiken, Thoroughbred Trials, and the residence of Mrs. W.R. Grace, Barnard Road.

Rock Hill Fire Department Records - Accession 242 - M102 (131)

The Rock Hill Fire Department Records consist correspondence from W.H. Wylie, for whom Lake Wylie is named, to prominent Rock Hillian Mr. W.T. Roddey and to the Rock Hill Fire Department. Also included is a program book for the 33rd Annual Convention of South Carolina State Firemen’s Association held in Rock Hill in 1928. The program book lists officers of the Association, committee appointments, fire chiefs, in SC, Rock Hill city officials with brief biographical sketches and sketches of the history of SC State Firemen’s Association, city of Rock Hill and Winthrop College.

Women's Club of Rock Hill Records - Accession 219

The Women's Club of Rock Hill's mission is to further the cultural, educational, and social interest of its members and to promote interest in Rock Hill’s civic development and welfare. The Women's Club of Rock Hill Records consist of constitutions and bylaws, histories, minutes, reports, correspondence, memoranda, program notes, brochures, newsletters, membership lists, yearbooks, questions, certificates, awards, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The records also relate to the thirteen affiliated clubs comprising the Woman’s Club of Rock Hill: Amateur Arts, Arts Appreciation, Book Discussion, Book Lovers, Crafts, Hearthstone, Hermitage, Home Study, Lantern, Literary, Outlook, Palmetto, and Politeia, and to other records for the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Club and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Records of various organizations not directly related to the Woman’s Club of Rock Hill are also included, such as the Tri-County Parents Without Partners, the Rock Hill Community Council, the Rock Hill Model Cities Commission, the Rock Hill Senior Center, and the South Carolina Conference on the Status of Women.

Fellowship of the Concerned Reports - Accession 40 - M15 (25)

The Fellowship of the Concerned Reports consist of two reports presented before the Fellowship in Atlanta, with one report by Marion Allan Wright describing the civil rights situation in South Carolina and the other by Father Maurice Shean of the Oratory in Rock Hill describing the work of the Rock Hill Council on Human Relations to better race relations in the city. The Fellowship was founded in 1949 and dissolved in 1970. It was an organization of southern women affiliated with the Southern Regional Council and concerned with promoting civil rights.

The Dora Dee Walker Papers consist of biographical sketches and data sheets, a letter, photographs, a newspaper clipping and a copy of the history of extension work in Allendale County, all relating to Dora Walker, pioneering State leader in extension work in South Carolina.
