Four binuclear copper (II) complexes Cu(oxpn)Cu(B)](2+) (2-5) bridged by N, N'-bis3-(methylamino) propyl] oxamide (oxpn), where, B is N, N-donor heterocyclic bases (viz. 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy, 2), 1,10-phenathroline (phen, 3), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq, 4) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz, 5) are synthesized, characterized by different spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray data technique. The phen (3) and dpq (4) complexes were structurally characterized by X-ray data analysis. Their DNA binding, oxidative cleavage and antibactirial activities were studied. The dpq (4) and dppz (5) complexes are avid binders to the Calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA). The phen (3), dpq (4) and dppz (5) complexes show efficient oxidative cleavage of supercoiled DNA (SC DNA) through hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot) pathway in the presence of Mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). A facile synthetic route for a new class of organoborane compounds (Mes)(2)B-arene-acacH and (Mes)(2)Barene-acacBF2 (Mes = mesityl and arene = C6H4 or C6Me4) is reported. The new dyads exhibit intriguing photophysical properties. A small structural change in spacer connecting the two chromophores leads to fine tuning of photophysical properties. The dyad containing 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl phenyl spacer acts as a selective ``turn-on'' chemodosimetric sensor for cyanide ion. Steric crowding around the boron centre significantly alters anion binding events. From NMR titration studies it is established that fluoride and cyanide follow different binding mechanisms which lead to intriguing optical properties in the reported probes.

Mono- and trinuclear copper(II) complexes with 2-1-(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-ethyl]-phenol (HL) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The mononuclear complex Cu(L)(H2O)(ONO2)] (1) crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2(1) /n with a square pyramidal Cu(II) center coordinated by the tridentate Schiff base (L) and a water ligand in the equatorial plane and an oxygen atom from nitrate in the axial position. The trinuclear complex (CuL)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (2) crystallizes in hexagonal space group P6(3); all three copper atoms are five-coordinate with square pyramidal geometries. The interactions of these complexes with calf-thymus DNA have been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. The mononuclear complex binds more strongly than the trinuclear complex. The DNA cleavage activity of these complexes has been studied on double-stranded pBR 322 plasmid DNA by gel electrophoresis experiments in the absence and in the presence of added oxidant (H2O2). The trinuclear complex cleaves DNA more efficiently than the mononuclear complex in the presence of H2O2.

Glucose-appended photocytotoxic iron(III) complexes of a tridentate Schiff base phenolate ligand Fe(bpyag) (L)] (NO3) (1-3), where bpyag is N,N-bis(2- pyridylmethyl)-2-aminoethyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside and H2L is 3-(2-hydroxyphenylimino)-1-phenylbutan-1-one (H(2)phap) in 1, 3-(2-hydroxyphenylimino)-9-anthrylbutan-1-one (H(2)anap) 2, and 3- (2-hydroxyphenylimino)-1-pyrenylbutan-1-one (H(2)pyap) in 3, were synthesized and characterized. The complex Fe(dpma)(anapn(NO3) (4), having bis-(2-pyridylmethyl)benzylamine (dpma), in which the glucose moiety of bpyag is substituted by a phenyl group, was used as a control, and the complex Fe(dpma)(anap)](PF6) (4a) was structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The structure shows a FeN4O2 core in a distorted octahedral geometry. The high-spin iron(III) complexes with magnetic moment value of similar to 5.9 mu(B) showed a low-energy phenolate-to-Fe(III) charge-transfer (CT) absorption band as a shoulder near 500 nm with a tail extending to 700 nm and an irreversible Fe(III)-Fe(II) redox couple near -0.6 V versus saturated calomel electrode. The complexes are avid binders to calf thymus DNA and showed photocleavage of supercoiled pUC19 DNA in red (647 nm) and green (532 nm) light. Complexes 2 and 3 displayed significant photocytotoxicity in red light, with an IC50 value of similar to 20 mu M in HeLa and HaCaT cells, and no significant toxicity in dark. The cell death is via an apoptotic pathway, by generation of reactive oxygen species. Preferential internalization of the carbohydrate-appended complexes 2 and 3 was evidenced in HeLa cells as compared to the control complex 4. A 5-fold increase in the cellular uptake was observed for the active complexes in HeLa cells. The photophysical properties of the complexes are rationalized from the density functional theory calculations.

Synthesis and characterization of cis, trans-RuH(eta(2)-H-2)(PPh3)(2)(N-N)]OTf] (N-N = 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy) 1a, 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) 2a; OTf = trifluoromethane sulfonate (CF3SO3)) complexes are reported. The cis-H-2/hydride ligands are involved in H-atom site exchange between the two moieties. This dynamics was investigated by variable temperature NMR spectral studies based on which the mechanism of the exchange process was deduced. The Delta G(#) for the exchange of H-atoms between the eta(2)-H-2 and hydride ligands was determined to be around 8 and 13 kJ mol(-1), respectively, for 1a and 2a. The H-H distances (d(HH), A) in complexes 1a and 2a have been calculated from the T-1(minimum) and (1)J(H, D) and are found to be 1.07 A (slow) and 0.95 A for 1a and 1.04 A (slow) and 0.94 A for 2a, respectively. The molecular structure of 1a was determined by X-ray crystallography.

Effects of fluctuations in habitat temperature (18-30 degrees) on mitochondrial respiratory behavior and oxidative metabolic responses in the euryhaline ectotherm Scylla serrate are not fully understood. In the present study, effects of different temperatures ranging from 12 to 40 degrees C on glutamate and succinate mediated mitochondrial respiration, respiratory control ratio (RCR), ATP generation rate, ratio for the utilization of phosphate molecules per atomic oxygen consumption (P/O), levels of lipid peroxidation and H2O2 in isolated gill mitochondria of S. serrata are reported. The pattern of variation in the studied parameters was similar for the two substrates at different temperatures. The values recorded for RCR ( >= 3) and P/O ratio (1.4-2.7) at the temperature range of 15-25 degrees C were within the normal range reported for other animals (3-10 for RCR and 1.5-3 for P/O). Values for P/O ratio, ATP generation rate and RCR were highest at 18 degrees C when compared to the other assay temperatures. However, at low and high extreme temperatures, i.e. at 12 and 40 degrees C, states III and IV respiration rates were not clearly distinguishable from each other indicating that mitochondria were completely uncoupled. Positive correlations were noticed between temperature and the levels of both lipid peroxidation and H2O2. It is inferred that fluctuations on either side of ambient habitat temperature may adversely influence mitochondria respiration and oxidative metabolism in S. serrata. The results provide baseline data to understand the impacts of acute changes in temperature on ectotherms inhabiting estuarine or marine environments. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Reaction of cobalt(II) perchlorate hexahydrate with a potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand, HL (2-methoxy-6-(2-diethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol) in presence of sodium azide and sodium thiocyanate yields two complexes Co( L)( HL)(N-3)]center dot ClO4 ( 1) and Co( L)( HL)(NCS)] center dot ClO4 ( 2); both being characterized by different physicochemical methods. Crystal structure of 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction while that of 2 was reported earlier. In 1, the central cobalt(III) adopts slightly distorted octahedral geometry with same donor set to that of 2. Catalytic efficacy of the complexes towards epoxidation of different alkenes under aerobic condition were investigated in homogeneous medium which reveals that 1 is better catalyst than 2 with respect to alkene oxidation, reflected from the turn over frequencies (TOF) measured at an optimum temperature of 60 degrees C in acetonitrile. Oxidovanadium(IV) complexes VO(py-aebmz)(B)]Cl (1, 2) and VO(napth-py-aebmz)(cur)]Cl 3; py-aebmz = 2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)ethanamine, HB = acetylacetone (Hacac, 1) and curcumin (Hcur, 2), napth-py-aebmz = naphthalimide conjugated to py-aebmz ] have been prepared, characterized and their photoinduced DNA cleavage activities and photocytotoxicities studied. Complexes 1-3 each exhibited an irreversible cyclic voltammetric response of the V-IV/V-III redox couple at around -0.85 V versus SCE in dmf/0.1 M tbap. The complexes showed DNA photocleavage activity in visible light of 454, 530 and 647 nm through hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen pathways. Fluorescence microscopy data suggest mitochondrial localization of complex 3 bearing a naphthalimide with a two-fold increase in photocytotoxicity in HaCaT cells with an IC50 value of 6.3 M and a three-fold increase in MCF-7 cells with an IC50 of 5.4 M compared with complex 2. Both 2 and 3 were non-toxic in the dark.

Co-crystal screening of the anti-HIV drug lamivudine was carried out with dicarboxylic acids as co-formers, and three of the resulting crystalline solids, two salts and a co-crystal, were studied with SCXRD, PXRD and FTIR spectroscopy. Salts of cytosine, a molecule that incorporates critical structural features of lamivudine, with the same co-formers, were taken as model systems for IR spectroscopic studies of the synthons in the salts of lamivudine. It is shown that different systems with the same synthon show very similar spectral signatures in the regions corresponding to the synthon absorptions. This reveals again the modular nature of the supramolecular synthon.
