The effect of irradiation (UV-visible light) on a nematic liquid crystal doped with a photoactive azobenzene derivative was investigated. The selective irradiation results in either an E implies Z or Z implies E isomerization of the azobenzene unit. The effect of the isomerization is to cause a reversible depression of the liquid crystal to isotropic (LC implies l) phase transition temperature of the doped mixture, which can be monitored optically as an isothermal phase transition. This depression also results in a biphasic liquid crystal+isotropic region which is discussed. The authors investigate the cause and magnitude of the phase depression as a function of the amount of doped 4-butyl-4'-methoxyazobenzene (photoactive unit) in 4-cyano-4'-n-pentylbiphenyl (liquid crystal unit), and as a function of the percentage conversion of E implies Z (caused by isomerization) in the azobenzene. The photostationary state of the doped mixtures achieved by Z implies E isomerization is considered and its effect upon the transition temperature of the mixture and response time of the system is discussed. They discuss the implications of the photostationary state with regards to the reversibility of the photo-induced phase transition and hence potential applications.

The synthesis of photochemical properties of a range of arylpropenoates are described and their suitability as photoactive units for the reversible manipulation of polymer properties assessed. The Z and E isomers of the 1-naphthyl-, 1-(4-methoxynaphthyl)- and 9-phenanthryl- derivatives have sufficiently different absorption characteristics to allow their selective exciation to give photostationary states having high concentrations of each isomer. Incorporation of the photoactive units into methacrylate based polymers changes the photostationary state concentrations of the Z and E isomers but the effect on the 1-(4-methoxynaphthyl)-derivative is small and here the photointerconversion is not accompanied by fatigue. The 9-anthryl derivative undergoes facile (4π + 4π) photodimerization and this may have potential as a reversible crosslinking mechanism.

The development of the real estate swap market offers many opportunities for investors to adjust the exposure of their portfolios to real estate. A number of OTC transactions have been observed in markets around the world. In this paper we examine the Japanese commercial real estate market from the point of view of an investor holding a portfolio of properties seeking to reduce the portfolio exposure to the real estate market by swapping an index of real estate for LIBOR. This paper explores the practicalities of hedging portfolios comprising small numbers of individual properties against an appropriate index. We use the returns from 74 properties owned by Japanese Real Estate Investment Trusts over the period up to September 2007. The paper also discusses and applies the appropriate stochastic processes required to model real estate returns in this application and presents alternative ways of reporting hedging effectiveness. We find that the development of the derivative does provide the capacity for hedging market risk but that the effectiveness of the hedge varies considerably over time. We explore the factors that cause this variability.

A glyconucleoside containing a thioglycoside linkage, namely 1-(3-S-beta-D-ribofuranosyl-2,3-dideoxy-3-thio-beta-D-ribofuranosyl)-thy mine, has been prepared through condensation of a suitably protected derivative of 3'-thiothymidine with an activated ribose sugar. NMR has been used to study the conformation of the S-disaccharide and the unmodified O-disaccharide. A full pseudorotational analysis showed that for the S-disaccharide, the ribose and deoxy ribose sugars have a preference for the south and north pucker, respectively; which is the reverse of what is seen for the O-disaccharide. This paper surveys numerical techniques for the regularization of descriptor (generalized state-space) systems by proportional and derivative feedback. We review generalizations of controllability and observability to descriptor systems along with definitions of regularity and index in terms of the Weierstraß canonical form. Three condensed forms display the controllability and observability properties of a descriptor system. The condensed forms are obtained through orthogonal equivalence transformations and rank decisions, so they may be computed by numerically stable algorithms. In addition, the condensed forms display whether a descriptor system is regularizable, i.e., when the system pencil can be made to be regular by derivative and/or proportional output feedback, and, if so, what index can be achieved. Also included is a a new characterization of descriptor systems that can be made to be regular with index 1 by proportional and derivative output feedback.
