Bulk chemistry and trace elements data were measured in 72 samples, selected from 5 basement sections, which have been recovered by Leg 60 drilling (Sites 453, 454, 456, 458, and 459). According to analytical results a metagabbro- metabasalt breccia, deposited about 5 Ma at the westernmost flank of the Mariana Trough (Site 453), was derived from an island arc source. Basalts from the Mariana Trough (Sites 454 and 456) are similar in many respects to midoceanic ridge basalts (MORB). Yet rocks of unusual geochemistry, reflecting the possible influence of arc volcanism, were found among the pillow lavas at the easternmost trough (Site 456). The acoustic basement in the Mariana fore-arc region was formed by submarine eruptions of arc tholeiites (Sites 458 and 459) and peculiar high-MgO andesites related to the boninite suite.

In order to validate the use of 238U/235U as a paleoredox proxy in carbonates, we examined the incorporation and early diagenetic evolution of U isotopes in shallow Bahamian carbonate sediments. Our sample set consists of a variety of primary precipitates that represent a range of carbonate producing organisms and components that were important in the past (scleractinian corals, calcareous green and red algae, ooids, and mollusks). In addition, four short push cores were taken in different depositional environments to assess the impact of early diagenesis and pore water chemistry on the U isotopic composition of bulk carbonates. We find that U concentrations are much higher in bulk carbonate sediments (avg. 4.1 ppm) than in primary precipitates (avg. 1.5 ppm). In almost all cases, the lowest bulk sediment U concentrations were as high as or higher than the highest concentrations found in primary precipitates. This is consistent with authigenic accumulation of reduced U(IV) during early diagenesis. The extent of this process appears sensitive to pore water H2S, and thus indirectly to organic matter content. d238/235U values were very close to seawater values in all of the primary precipitates, suggesting that these carbonate components could be used to reconstruct changes in seawater U geochemistry. However, d238/235U of bulk sediments from the push cores was 0.2-0.4 per mil heavier than seawater (and primary precipitates). These results indicate that authigenic accumulation of U under open-system sulfidic pore water conditions commonly found in carbonate sediments strongly affects the bulk U concentrations and 238U/235U ratios. We also report the occurrence of dolomite in a tidal pond core which contains low 234U/238U and 238U/235U ratios and discuss the possibility that the dolomitization process may result in sediments depleted in 238U. From this initial exploration, it is clear that 238U/235U variations in ancient carbonate sediments could be driven by changes in global average seawater, by spatial and temporal variations in the local deposition environment, or subsequent diagenesis. To cope with such effects, proxies for syndepositional pore water redox conditions (e.g., organic matter content, iron speciation, and trace metal distributions) and careful consideration of possible post-deposition alteration will be required to avoid spurious interpretation of 238U/235U data from ancient carbonate sediments.

One hundred and twenty point counts of Oligocene to Recent sands and sandstones from DSDP sites in the Japan and Mariana intraoceanic forearc and backarc basins demonstrate that there is a clear compositional difference between the continentally influenced Japan forearc and backarc sediments, and the totally oceanic Mariana forearc and backarc sediments. Japan forearc sediments average 10 QFL%Q, 0.82 P/F, 2 Framework%Mica, 74 LmLvLst%Lv, and 19 LmLvLst%Lst. In contrast, the Mariana forearc and backarc sediments average 0 QFL%Q, 1.00 P/F, 0 Framework%Mica, 98 LmLvLst%Lv, and 1 LmLvLst%Lst. Sediment compositions in the Japan region are variable. The Honshu forearc sediments average 5 QFL%Q, 0.94 P/F, 1 Framework%Mica, 82 LmLvLst%Lv, and 15 LmLvLst%Lst. The Yamato Basin sediments (DSDP Site 299) average 13 QFL%Q, 0.70 P/F, 3 Framework%Mica, 78 LmLvLst%Lv, and 14 LmLvLst%Lst. The Japan Basin sediments (DSDP Site 301) average 24 QFL%Q, 0.54 P/F, 9 Framework%Mica, 58 LmLvLst%Lv, and 21 LmLvLst%Lst. P/F and Framework%Mica are higher in the Yamato Basin sediments than in the forearc sediments due to an increase in modal potassium content of volcanic rocks from east to west, on the island of Honshu. Site 301 possesses a higher QFL%Q and LmLvLst%Lst, and lower LmLvLst%Lv than Site 299 because it receives sediment from the Asian mainland as well as the island of Honshu. DSDP Site 293 sediments, in the Mariana region, average 0.97 P/F, 1 Framework%Mica, 13 LmLvLst%Lm and 83 LmLvLst%Lv, due to their proximity to the island of Luzon. The remaining Mariana forearc and backarc sediments show a uniform composition.

Detrital modes of middle Miocene sandstone recovered at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 471 on the Magdalena Fan support the hypothesis that the fan has been displaced northward from a source hundreds of kilometers to the south near the present mouth of the Gulf of California. The modes are dissimilar to those of modern sand derived from onshore outcrops of Miocene volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, Neogene sedimentary rocks, and Mesozoic subduction complex. They most closely match sand associated with the mouth of Gulf of California. The overall stratigraphy, sand composition, and diagenesis at Site 471 are consistent with deposition of the Magdalena Fan on young oceanic crust near a spreading ridge at a triple junction.

Pliocene and Pleistocene volcanic glass fragments from Mariana Trough sediments at Sites 453 (16 samples) and 454 (4 samples), located near the western edge of the trough and just west of the spreading axis, respectively, have been analyzed for major elements with an electron microprobe. They derive from volcanic activity on the present Mariana active arc. The glasses from Site 453 are all tholeiitic with a wide range of SiO2 contents. Those less than 2 m.y. old have slightly lower TiO2 and higher K2O contents than the older ones. The glasses from Site 454 are all Pleistocene and resemble the younger glasses at Site 453. Major element compositions of the older basaltic glasses at Site 453 are similar to those of the Mariana Trough basalts drilled on Leg 60. Both older and younger suites of glasses differ from the composition of rocks exposed on the active arc, which are assumed to be younger than any of the samples studied (i.e., about 200,000 y.). A third suite is represented by the arc rocks exposed on the volcanic islands. These have a smaller range of SiO2 contents and contain more A12O3 but less K2O, TiO2, and FeO1 (total Fe as FeO) than the sediment glasses studied. Further, a plot of FeO1 against MgO for the arc rocks does not follow the island arc tholeiite trend of the trough sediment glasses. Using the major element compositions of the arc rocks and sediment glasses, we can recognize three phases of volcanic activity, as indicated. The first evidence of the oldest phase of activity occurs 5 Ma, about 4.5 m.y. after the trough started to form. The second commenced about 2 Ma, and the last, including present-day activity, began within the last 200,000 y. Initially the rocks had major element affinities with the tholeiitic Mariana Trough seafloor, but this influence declined as the trough widened.

Up to now 19 species of Cladocera have been found in ponds of the Varanger Peninsula (Eastern Finnmark, Norway), which are presented here. A comparison with other regions in the northern Holarctic shows, that the limits of distribution of Cladocera mainly run parallel to latitudes. Using the number of Cladocera-species as an indicator, certain regions seem to be either favoured or unfavoured with respect to the climate in inland-waters. The Varanger Peninsula can be reckoned as a favoured region.

Basalts in two holes spaced 200 meters apart at DSDP Site 456 in the Mariana Trough both show a downward sequence of nonoxidative and oxidative zones of alteration, each 10 to 15 meters thick, overlying fresh basalts. Basalts in the nonoxidative zone have been extensively chloritized and have vein and vesicle fillings of quartz, opal, chlorite, calcite, and pyrite. Minor sulfides are chalcopyrite and digenite. Basalts in the oxidative zone have abundant smectites and iron hydroxides and are variably enriched in K, Rb, and Ba, unlike the nonoxidative basalts above them. We propose that the oxidative zone was a zone of mixing between high-temperature, reduced hydrothermal fluids moving horizontally beneath impermeable sediments at the top of the pillowed basement lavas and cold, oxygenated seawater in interpillow voids deeper in the basement. Recrystallized vitric tuffs immediately above the basalts containing authigenic quartz and wairakite, as well as occurrence of chlorite, epidote, and chalcopyrite in the basalts, suggest temperatures of alteration in excess of 200°C.

Neogene stratigraphy of the tropical and subtropical Pacific on radiolaria is studied in the book. A detailed comparison of coeval systems from tropics and subtropics is given. A possibility of use of a uniform zonal scale in these areas is proved. Magnitude of changes of complexes on borders of Neogene zones is studied in detail. Six stages in development of radiolarians are identified in the tropics in Neogene. Stratigraphic levels, where the greatest changes of fauna occurred, are natural boundaries of these stages. 72 species of radiolarians (two of which are new) are described in the book.

The ice-covered Central Arctic Ocean is characterized by low primary productivity due to light and nutrient limitations. It has been speculated that the recent reduction in ice cover could lead to a substantial increase in primary production, but still little is known as to the fate of the ice-associated primary production, and of nutrient supply with increasing warming. This study presents results from the Central Arctic Ocean collected during summer 2012, when sea-ice reached a minimum extent since the onset of satellite observations. Net primary productivity (NPP) was measured in water column, sea ice and melt ponds by 14CO2 uptake at different irradiances. Photosynthesis vs. irradiance (PI) curves were established in laboratory experiments and used to upscale measured NPP to the deep Eurasian Basin (north of 78°N) using the irradiance-based Central Arctic Ocean Primary Productivity model (CAOPP). In addition, new annual production was calculated from the seasonal nutrient drawdown in the mixed layer since last winter. Results show that ice algae can contribute up to 60% to primary production in the Central Arctic at the end of the season. The ice-covered water column had lower NPP rates than open water probably due to light limitation. According to the nutrient ratios in the euphotic zone, nitrate limitation was detected in the Siberian Seas (Laptev Sea area), while silicate was the main limiting nutrient at the ice margin influenced by Atlantic waters. Although sea-ice cover was substantially reduced in 2012, total annual new production in the Eurasian Basin was 17 ± 7 Tg C/yr, which is similar to previous estimates. However, when including the contribution by sub-ice algal filaments, the annual production for the deep Eurasian Basin (north of 78°N) is 16 Tg C/yr higher than estimated before. Our data suggest that sub-ice algae might be responsible for potential local increases in NPP due to higher light availability under the ice, and their ability to benefit from a wider area of nutrients as they drift with the ice.

The tops of the Emperor chain guyots, which were drilled during Leg 55, lie above the carbonate compensation depth (CCD), as well as above the foraminiferal dissolution level, i.e., lysocline. They are therefore the sites of accumulation of pelagic foraminiferal nannofossil ooze, such accumulation having taken place here since the moment of the seamounts' subsidence and the termination of shallow-water carbonate accumulation which was formerly developed on their tops. But the existence of strong bottom currents over the tops and slope scarps limits, and at some places reduces to zero, sedimentation of any pelagic particles. At such areas there are formed thick iron-manganese crusts. The seamounts drilled on Leg 55 are within the northern (Boreal) belt of biogenic silica accumulation, which existed in the northern Pacific throughout the Neogene. This circumstance presupposes a possible enrichment of the relatively fine-grained sediments with biogenic silica - diatoms and radiolarians.

During Leg 65, 15 holes were drilled at four sites located on young crust in the mouth of the Gulf of California. Quaternary to upper Pliocene hemipelagic sediments above and interlayered within the young basaltic basement were cored. The influence of hot lava, high temperature gradients, and hydrothermal activity on the mineralogy and geochemistry of the terrigenous sediments near contacts with basalts might therefore be expected. The purpose of the present study was to determine the mineralogy and inorganic geochemistry of these sediments and to analyze the nature and extent of low temperature alteration. To this end we studied the mineralogy and inorganic geochemistry of 75 sediment samples, including those immediately overlying uppermost basalts and those from layers alternating with basalts within the basement. We separated three size fractions - <2 µm (clay), 2-20 µm (intermediate), and >20 µm (coarse) - and applied the following mineralogical determinations: x-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and optical microscopy (for coarse fractions, using thin sections and smear slides). We calculated the percentages of clay minerals using Biscaye's (1964) method, and used routine wet chemical analyses to determine bulk composition and quantitative spectral analyses for trace elements.

The compositions, mineralogies, and textures of gabbros recovered in polymict breccias in Hole 453 indicate that they are the cumulus assemblages of calc-alkalic crystal fractional on that occurred beneath the West Mariana Ridge. They are among a class of gabbros known only from other calc-alkalic associations (e.g., the Lesser Antilles and the Peninsular Ranges batholith of Southern California) and differ from gabbros of stratiform complexes, ophiolites, and the ocean crust. Particularly abundant in the Hole 453 breccias are olivine-bearing gabbros with extremely calcic Plagioclase (An94-97) but with fairly iron-rich olivines (Fo76-77). Other gabbros contain biotite and amphibole and occur in breccias with fairly high-grade greenschist facies (amphibole-chlorite-stilpnomelane) metabasalts. One unusual gabbro has experienced almost complete subsolidus recrystallization to an assemblage of aluminous magnesio-hornblende, anorthite, and green hercynitic spinel. This reaction, the extremely calcic Plagioclase, the occurrence of biotite and amphibole, and the association with greenschist facies metamorphic rocks suggest that crystallization of the gabbros occurred at elevated P(H2O). Comparisons with other calc-alkalic gabbro suites suggest pressures in excess of 4 kbar (about 12 km depth). The gabbros were exposed by the early stages of opening of the Mariana Trough and imply that considerable uplift may have attended rifting. They were also subjected to hydrothermal alteration after breccia formation, resulting in formation of chlorite, epidote, actinolite, and prehnite. Temperatures of at least 200°C - and probably 350°C - were reached, and most likely could not have been attained without extrusion or intrusion of magmas nearby, even though no such rocks were cored.
