Fatigue fracture behavior of Ti-6Al-4V PVD coated

Fatigue, corrosion and wear resistance are important parameters in aircraft components development as landing gear. High strength/weight ratio and effective corrosion resistance make of titanium alloys an alternative choice to replace steel and aluminum alloys. However, titanium alloys have poor tribological properties, which reduce devices performance under friction. PVD coatings tribological systems has been increased due to their attractive mechanical properties as low environmental impact, low friction coefficient, low wear rate and hardness up to 2000 HV.In this study the influence of TiN deposited by PVD on the fatigue strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was evaluated. Comparison of fatigue strength of coated specimens and base material shows also a decrease when parts are coated. It was observed that the influence is more significant in high cycle fatigue tests. Scanning electron microscopy technique (SEM) was used to observe crack origin sites and fracture features. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Postoperative renal function evaluation, through RIFLE criteria, of elderly patients who underwent femur fracture surgery under spinal anesthesia

Introduction. The postoperative acute renal failure (ARF) incidence in different kinds of surgery has rarely been studied. Age, cardiac dysfunction, previous renal dysfunction, intraoperative hypoperfusion, and use of nephrotoxic medications are mentioned as risk factors for ARF at the postoperative period. The postoperative ARF definition was based on the creatinine increase by the RIFLE classification (R = risk, I = injury, F = failure, L = loss, E = end stage), which corresponds to a 1.5 creatinine increase, two to three times, respectively, above the basal value. This study aimed to evaluate the postoperative ARF incidence in elderly patients who underwent femur fracture surgery under subarachnoid anesthesia and stratify it by the RIFLE criteria. Methods. Ninety patients older than 65 years under spinal anesthesia with fixed dosage of 15 mg of 0.5% isobaric bupivacaine associated with morphine 50 g were studied. Immediate postoperative creatinine was considered basal and compared with maximal creatinine evaluated at 24, 48, and 72 postoperative hours. Results. The mean age of the patients was 80.27 years. ARF incidence was 24.44% and stratified this way: R = 21.11% and I = 3.33%. Conclusions. In conclusion, the postoperative ARF incidence after femur fracture surgery in patients over 65 years was 24.44%. By analyzing the stratification based on the RIFLE classification, the incidence was categorized as Risk (R) = 21.11% and Injury (I) = 3.33%.

Reintrodução na natureza do tamanduá-bandeira (Myrmecophaga tridactyla)após osteossíntese de rádio e ulna

A female, adult, 27 kg Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) was directed to the veterinary hospital by the Center ofSelection of Wild Animals (Cetas) of the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), afterit was found on a highway. After clinical and radiologic examination, radius and ulna fractures of the left thoracic memberwere observed. Taking in consideration to the physical status of the animal, its size, the type of fracture and resources availablein the hospital veterinary, internal fixation with Intramedullary Pinning (on the Radius and Ulna) was the treatment methodchosen. About 35 days after the surgery the animal was walking without difficulties and by x-ray it was possible to observeformation of callus. The presence of decurrent bony deformities due to the type of fixation was not found. As the animal presentedno more difficulties in walking, we opted for its reintroduction to its original environment. The aim of the present casestudy is sharing the results of the Intramedullary Pinning implantation technique, widely used in dogs and cats, now used in a Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla).

Fixador esquelético pino-resina acrílica e enxerto ósseo esponjoso no tratamento de complicações secundárias à imobilização inadequada de fratura do rádio e ulna em cães

O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a eficácia do fixador esquelético pino-resina, configuração tipo II, coadjuvado pelo enxerto ósseo esponjoso autólogo, no tratamento das complicações secundárias à imobilização inadequada de fraturas do rádio e ulna em 10 cães, com peso entre 1,8 e 33,6 kg. Detectou-se não-união (n=4), osteomielite (n=1), má-união (n=1), falência ou quebra de implante (n=4), sendo 60% das lesões referente ao uso prévio de pino intramedular no rádio. A montagem do fixador foi realizada com transfixação de pinos lisos em sua maioria angulados, cujas extremidades excedentes foram dobradas e estabilizadas com resina acrílica. em todos os casos, utilizou-se enxerto esponjoso autólogo fresco, após debridamento do foco de fratura. O tempo de permanência do aparelho variou entre 45 dias e 5 meses e a maior complicação foi o afrouxamento dos pinos transfixantes. A consolidação das fraturas ocorreu por formação de calo periosteal de mínimo a moderado, indicando boa rigidez da montagem.

Use of an osteoconductive compound as an aid in the management of a maxillary fracture in a boa constrictor

A boa constrictor was presented with a short oblique compound fracture of the rostral third of the right maxilla. The fracture was reduced and biomaterial was placed around the fracture. A computed tomography scan at 1.5 mo post-surgery showed that the fracture had healed with slight displacement of the bone fragments.
