We report on neutron diffraction study of a new form of conducting amorphous carbon up to Q similar to 14.5 Angstrom(-1). The bond distances from first two peaks in g(r) are 1.45 and 2.49 Angstrom, very similar to those in sputtered truly amorphous carbon films (Li and Lannin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 65 (1990) 1905). The first coordination number is 3.1 (+/- 0.1) indicating predominantly sp(2) hybridisation (ideal no. = 3). However, S(Q) itself shows vestiges of (0 0 2), (1 0) and (1 1) peaks, typical of glassy carbon (Mildner, J. Non-Cryst. Solids 47 (1982) 391). (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In order to understand the translational and rotational motion in dense molecular liquids, detailed molecular dynamics simulations of Lennard-Jones ellipsoids have been carried out for three different values of the aspect ratio kappa. For ellipsoids with an aspect ratio equal to 2, the product of the translational diffusion coefficient (D-T) and the average orientational correlation time of the l-th rank harmonics (tau(lR)), converges to a nearly constant value at high density. Surprisingly, this density independent value of D-T tau(lR) is within 5% of the hydrodynamic prediction with the slip boundary condition. This is despite the fact that both D-T and tau(lR) themselves change nearly by an order of magnitude in the density range considered, and the rotational correlation function itself is strongly nonexponential. For small aspect ratios (kappa less than or equal to 1.5), the rotational correlation function remains largely Gaussian even at a very large density, while for a large aspect ratio (kappa greater than or equal to 3), the transition to the nematic liquid-crystalline phase precludes the hydrodynamic regime. Thus, the rotational dynamics of ellipsoids show great sensitivity to the aspect ratio. At low density, tau(lR) goes through a minimum value, indicating the role of interactions in enhancing the rate of orientational relaxation. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics. The aim of logic synthesis is to produce circuits which satisfy the given boolean function while meeting timing constraints and requiring the minimum silicon area. Logic synthesis involves two steps namely logic decomposition and technology mapping. Existing methods treat the two as separate operation. The traditional approach is to minimize the number of literals without considering the target technology during the decomposition phase. The decomposed expressions are then mapped on to the target technology to optimize the area, Timing optimization is carried out subsequently, A new approach which treats logic decomposition and technology maping as a single operation is presented. The logic decomposition is based on the parameters of the target technology. The area and timing optimization is carried out during logic decomposition phase itself. Results using MCNC circuits are presented to show that this method produces circuits which are 38% faster while requiring 14% increase in area.

It is proposed that singlet dioxygen reacting with guanosine or deoxyguanosine part of nucleotides does not, by itself, cause DNA cleavage. The strand break originates at the endoperoxide stage whenever this link evolves into a O-centered radical. The O-centered radical is then in a good spatial position to abstract an hydrogen intramolecularly from the ribose or desoxyribose part of the nucleotide. The carbon centered radical thus formed on the sugar part may lead to strand break either by a p-scission mechanism or by an homolytically induced solvolysis. High pH could also induce cleavage after the endoperoxide stage via a base catalyzed ring chain protomerism.

A detailed investigation of viscosity dependence of the isomerization rate is carried out for continuous potentials by using a fully microscopic, self-consistent mode-coupling theory calculation of both the friction on the reactant and the viscosity of the medium. In this calculation we avoid approximating the short time response by the Enskog limit, which overestimates the friction at high frequencies. The isomerization rate is obtained by using the Grote-Hynes formula. The viscosity dependence of the rate has been investigated for a large number of thermodynamic state points. Since the activated barrier crossing dynamics probes the high-frequency frictional response of the liquid, the barrier crossing rate is found to be sensitive to the nature of the reactant-solvent interaction potential. When the solute-solvent interaction is modeled by a 6-12 Lennard-Jones potential, we find that over a large variation of viscosity (eta), the rate (k) can indeed be fitted very well to a fractional viscosity dependence: (k similar to eta(-alpha)), with the exponent alpha in the range 1 greater than or equal to alpha >0. The calculated values of the exponent appear to be in very good agreement with many experimental results. In particular, the theory, for the first time, explains the experimentally observed high value of alpha even at the barrier frequency, omega(b). similar or equal to 9 X 10(12) s(-1) for the isomerization reaction of 2-(2'-propenyl)anthracene in liquid eta-alkanes. The present study can also explain the reason for the very low value of vb observed in another study for the isomerization reaction of trans-stilbene in liquid n-alkanes. For omega(b) greater than or equal to 2.0 X 10(13) s(-1), we obtain alpha similar or equal to 0, which implies that the barrier crossing rate becomes identical to the transition-state theory predictions. A careful analysis of isomerization reaction dynamics involving large amplitude motion suggests that the barrier crossing dynamics itself may become irrelevant in highly viscous liquids and the rate might again be coupled directly to the viscosity. This crossover is predicted to be strongly temperature dependent and could be studied by changing the solvent viscosity by the application of pressure. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. We show analytically that in dilute solutions of high molecular weight polymers, a collapse transition of the chain can be induced by proximity to the critical point of the solvent. The transition is driven by the fluctuations in the medium, which lead to an effective attractive interaction of long range between different parts of the polymer. At the critical point itself, however, the chain adopts the same average conformations that characterize its size in the off-critical limit. In other words, on approach to the critical point, the polymer is found first to contract and collapse, and then subsequently to return to its original dimensions. This behavior has recently been observed in simulations of polymer-solvent mixtures near the lower critical solution temperature of the system, and it is also known to be characteristic of solutions of polymers in bicomponent solvent mixtures near the critical consolute point of the two solvents. Background: Duration of seizure by itself is an insufficient criterion for a therapeutically adequate seizure in ECT. Therefore, measures of seizure EEG other than its duration need to be explored as indices of seizure adequacy and predictors of treatment response. We measured the EEG seizure using a geometrical method-fractal dimension (FD) and examined if this measure predicted remission. Methods: Data from an efficacy study on melancholic depressives (n = 40) is used for the present exploration. They received thrice or once weekly ECTs, each schedule at two energy levels - high or low energy level. FD was computed for early-, mid- and post-seizure phases of the ictal EEG. Average of the two channels was used for analysis. Results: Two-thirds of the patients (n = 25) were remitted at the end of 2 weeks. As expected, a significantly higher proportion of patients receiving thrice weekly ECT remitted than in patients receiving once weekly ECT. Smaller post-seizure FD at first ECT is the only variable which predicted remission status after six ECTs. within the once weekly ECT group too, smaller post-seizure FD was associated with remission status. Conclusions: Post-seizure FD is proposed as a novel measure of seizure adequacy and predictor of treatment response. Clinical implications: Seizure measures at first ECT may guide selection of ECT schedule to optimize ECT. Limitations: The study examined short term antidepressant effects only. The results may not be generalized to medication-resistant depressives. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) powered using harvested energies is limited in its operation by instantaneous power. Since energy availability can be different across nodes in the network, network setup and collaboration is a non trivial task. At the same time, in the event of excess energy, exciting node collaboration possibilities exist; often not feasible with battery driven sensor networks. Operations such as sensing, computation, storage and communication are required to achieve the common goal for any sensor network. In this paper, we design and implement a smart application that uses a Decision Engine, and morphs itself into an energy matched application. The results are based on measurements using IRIS motes running on solar energy. We have done away with batteries; instead used low leakage super capacitors to store harvested energy. The Decision Engine utilizes two pieces of data to provide its recommendations. Firstly, a history based energy prediction model assists the engine with information about in-coming energy. The second input is the energy cost database for operations. The energy driven Decision Engine calculates the energy budgets and recommends the best possible set of operations. Under excess energy condition, the Decision Engine, promiscuously sniffs the neighborhood looking for all possible data from neighbors. This data includes neighbor's energy level and sensor data. Equipped with this data, nodes establish detailed data correlation and thus enhance collaboration such as filling up data gaps on behalf of nodes hibernating under low energy conditions. The results are encouraging. Node and network life time of the sensor nodes running the smart application is found to be significantly higher compared to the base application.

Parallel execution of computational mechanics codes requires efficient mesh-partitioning techniques. These mesh-partitioning techniques divide the mesh into specified number of submeshes of approximately the same size and at the same time, minimise the interface nodes of the submeshes. This paper describes a new mesh partitioning technique, employing Genetic Algorithms. The proposed algorithm operates on the deduced graph (dual or nodal graph) of the given finite element mesh rather than directly on the mesh itself. The algorithm works by first constructing a coarse graph approximation using an automatic graph coarsening method. The coarse graph is partitioned and the results are interpolated onto the original graph to initialise an optimisation of the graph partition problem. In practice, hierarchy of (usually more than two) graphs are used to obtain the final graph partition. The proposed partitioning algorithm is applied to graphs derived from unstructured finite element meshes describing practical engineering problems and also several example graphs related to finite element meshes given in the literature. The test results indicate that the proposed GA based graph partitioning algorithm generates high quality partitions and are superior to spectral and multilevel graph partitioning algorithms.

We develop an optimal, distributed, and low feedback timer-based selection scheme to enable next generation rate-adaptive wireless systems to exploit multi-user diversity. In our scheme, each user sets a timer depending on its signal to noise ratio (SNR) and transmits a small packet to identify itself when its timer expires. When the SNR-to-timer mapping is monotone non-decreasing, timers of users with better SNRs expire earlier. Thus, the base station (BS) simply selects the first user whose timer expiry it can detect, and transmits data to it at as high a rate as reliably possible. However, timers that expire too close to one another cannot be detected by the BS due to collisions. We characterize in detail the structure of the SNR-to-timer mapping that optimally handles these collisions to maximize the average data rate. We prove that the optimal timer values take only a discrete set of values, and that the rate adaptation policy strongly influences the optimal scheme's structure. The optimal average rate is very close to that of ideal selection in which the BS always selects highest rate user, and is much higher than that of the popular, but ad hoc, timer schemes considered in the literature.

This is the first report on the study carried out on high-pressure free-radical initiated oxidated copolymerization of styrene (STY) with alpha-methylstyrene (AMS) at various temperatures (45-65degreesC) at constant pressure (100 psi) and then at various pressures (50-300 psi) keeping the temperature (50degreesC) constant. The compositions of the copolyperoxides obtained from the H-1 NMT spectra were utilized to determine the reactivity ratios of the monomers. The reactivity ratios indicate that STY forms an ideal copolyperoxide with AMS and the copolyperoxide is richer in AMS. The effect of temperature and oxygen pressure in the reactivity ratios of the monomers was studied. The rates of copolymerization (R-p) were used to determine the overall activation energies (E-a) and activation volume (DeltaV(#)) of copolymerization. The unusually higher values of the DeltaV(#) may be due to the pressurizing fluid oxygen which itself is a reactant in the copolymerization, the side reactions, and the chain-transfer reactions occuring during copolymerizations.

CDS/ISIS is an advanced non-numerical information storage and retrieval software developed by UNESCO since 1985 to satisfy the need expressed by many institutions, especially in developing countries, to be able to streamline their information processing activities by using modern (and relatively inexpensive) technologies [1]. CDS/ISIS is available for MS-DOS, Windows and Unix operating system platforms. The formatting language of CDS/ISIS is one of its several strengths. It is not only used for formatting records for display but is also used for creating customized indexes. CDS/ISIS by itself does not facilitate in publishing its databases on the Internet nor does it facilitate in publishing on CD-ROMs. However, numbers of open source tools are now available, which enables in publishing CDS/ISIS databases on the Internet and also on CD-ROMs. In this paper, we have discussed the ways and means of integrating CDS/ISIS databases with GSDL, an open source digital library (DL) software.

Examines the possible magnitude of suction in compacted states of clayey soils. From the test results, it is concluded that suction is zero in monotonically loaded unsaturated states. This implies that suction in compacted states should be equal to the compaction stress itself. However, as data previously reported in literature have often shown - suction is strongly related to the water content and not much affected by the compaction stress.

Structures of monohydrogen squarates of methylamine, ethylenediamine, 1,3-diaminopropane, 1,4-diaminobutane, 1,5-diaminopentane, N,N'-diemethylpiperazine and N,N,N,N-tetramethylguanidine have been studied in detail. The supramolecular hydrogen-bonded molecular networks are formed by the monoanion of squaric acid by itself or in association with the parent acid. Three types of hydrogen-bonded motifs are observed in these compounds, namely a liner chain, a cyclic dimer and a cyclic tetramer. These hydrogen-bonded motifs formed by the squaric acid species interact with the amine through N-H...O hydrogen-bonding and give rise to predominantly layered structures, while some of them also exhibit three-dimensional structures. Two of the monohydrogen squarate structures also exhibit pi-pi interactions between two squarate rings. The various hydrogen-bonding parameters in the amine squarates are discussed at length.
