A common approach to nature conservation is to identify and protect natural 'assets’ such as ecosystems and threatened species. While such actions are essential, protection of assets will not be effective unless the ecological processes that sustain them are maintained. Here, we consider the role of ecological processes and the complementary perspective for conservation arising from an emphasis on process. Many kinds of ecological processes sustain biodiversity: including climatic processes, primary productivity, hydrological processes, formation of biophysical habitats, interactions between species, movements of organisms and natural disturbance regimes. Anthropogenic threats to conservation exert their influence by modifying or disrupting these processes. Such threats extend across tenures, they frequently occur offsite, they commonly induce non-linear responses, changes may be irreversible and the full consequences may not be experienced for lengthy periods. While many managers acknowledge these considerations in principle, there is much scope for greater recognition of ecological processes in nature conservation and greater emphasis on long time-frames and large spatial scales in conservation planning. Practical measures that promote ecological processes include: monitoring to determine the trajectory and rate of processes; incorporating surrogates for processes in conservation and restoration projects; specific interventions to manipulate and restore processes; and planning for the ecological future before options are foreclosed. The long-term conservation of biodiversity and the wellbeing of human society depend upon both the protection of natural assets and maintaining the integrity of the ecological processes that sustain them.

The aim of this project was to investigate the effects of oral contraceptives on the nutrient composition of breast milk. The design of the study also allowed the effects of stage of lactation and maternal diet on milk composition to be observed. A prospective study was designed to measure maternal dietary intake and vitamin and trace element concentration in milk and plasma. Vitamin A, ascorbic acid and iron, copper, zinc, manganese, selenium, cobalt, chromium, rubidium and caesium were measured. Two groups of women participated, oral contraceptive users and controls. Fasting milk and blood samples and 24-hour food records were collected from the women once a week for 20 weeks commencing 3-8 weeks post-partum, and 1-2 weeks before they began to take oral contraceptives. Fifteen women participated in the study; 5 took progestogen-only oral contraceptives, 1 took an oestrogen-progestogen oral contraceptive and 9 acted as controls. Progestogen-only oral contraceptives did not affect the milk or plasma concentration of the vitamins and trace elements measured. As only 1 subject took an oestrogen-progestogen preparation no conclusion could be drawn as to its effect. The mean milk and plasma concentration of all nutrients studied did not change significantly with the progression of lactation, with the exception of iron and zinc. The mean milk iron concentration was significantly higher at 16 weeks post-partum than at 8 and 23 weeks post-partum. The mean milk zinc concentration was significantly lower at 23 weeks post-partum than at 8 and 16 weeks post-partum. The infants1 mean estimated daily intakes of ascorbic acid and vitamin A from breast milk were above the U.S. and British Recommended Dietary Allowance for those vitamins. However, their mean estimated intakes of iron, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium were well below the U.S. recommendations. Effects of the maternal dietary intake on milk and plasma composition were variable. Implications of these findings have been discussed.

he prominence of global warming as an environmental issue has illustrated the close relationship between natural resources, ecosystems and global security. Whilst environmental decision making often uses techniques such as economic valuation and risk management, the security component is often not considered, at least not from a security analyst’s perspective. Yet environmental security considerations can be global, regional and/or national in impact. Environmental change and policy can effect human health and well being as well as initiating conflict; it can affect the existence of life itself. These aspects are firmly in the domain of the security discipline although the protection of the global ecosystem has not traditionally been considered by those who create security policy. The idea of environmental/ecological security ranges from the eco-centric approach which examines the impact of human activities that impact on the security of the natural systems to the more traditional anthropocentric perspectives that look at varied issues such as conflict caused by natural resource competition and environmental degradation, and the greening of military operations. This paper will assert that the inclusion of the security factor in policy creation and environmental assessments is essential to give richer solutions to these complex socio-economic and ecological situations. Systems theory over the last few decades has emphasised the inclusion of as many perspectives on messy problems as possible to provide truly systemic outcomes. It is posited that the addition of such concepts as threat analyses will produce more effective and sustainable outcomes.

In this study, the finite element modeling and comparison of the stress and strain analyses were carried out for three different structures that are intact bone, stemless implant and stemmed one. Currently proposed stemless design studied here is the generic concept of stemless implant. This generic stemless implant reconstruction was numerically compared to the conventional stemmed implant and also to the intact bone as control solution. Two loading conditions were applied to the most proximal part of the models, while the most distal part was fixed for all degrees of freedom. The models were divided into two regions and studied along two paths of medial and lateral aspect. The results of this study showed that the stemless implant had less deviation from the control solution of the bone in all regions and in both loading conditions, comparing to the large deviation of the stemmed implant from the intact bone. However, it was shown that the fixation of this type of implant and its effect on sub-trochanter region must be carefully considered for designing the final product of any specific design of stemless implant.

In the paper, two novel 2-D hybrid special finite elements each containing an interfacial edge crack, which lies along or vertical to the interface between two materials, are developed. These proposed elements can assure the high precision especially in the vicinity of crack tip and provide a better description of its singularity with only one hybrid element surrounding one interfacial crack, thus, the numerical modeling of fracture analysis on bi-material crack can be greatly simplified. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the validity and versatility of the proposed method.

This paper employed a systematic analysis using a 2-D hybrid special finite element containing an edge crack in order to describe the fracture behavior of spot-welds in automotive structures. The 2-D hybrid special finite element is derived form a mixed formulation with a complex potential function with the description of the singularity of a stress field. The hybrid special finite element containing an edge crack can give a better description of its singularity with only one hybrid element surrounding one crack. The advantage of this special element is that it can greatly simplify the numerical modeling of the spot welds. Some numerical examples demonstrate the validity and versatility of the present analysis method. The lap-shear, lap-tension and angle-clip specimens are analyzed and some useful fracture parameters such as the stress intensity factor and the initial direction of crack growth are obtained simultaneously.

Based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and Timoshenko's laminated composite beam functions, a simple displacement-based 4-node, 24-dof quadrilateral laminated plate element is proposed in this paper for linear analysis of thin to moderately thick laminates. The deflection and rotation functions of the element boundary are obtained from the Timoshenko's laminated composite beam functions, hence convergence to the thin plate solution can be achieved theoretically and shear-locking problem is avoided naturally. The in-plane displacement functions of a quadrilateral plane element with drilling degrees of freedom are taken as the in-plane displacements of the proposed quadrilateral element. Some numerical examples of linear analysis of composite laminated plates are calculated, and the results show that the proposed element is convergent, shear-locking free, efficient, accurate and not sensitive to mesh distortion.

The 4-node, 24-dof quadrilateral displacement-based element (Zhang et al. 2004), which have been developed successfully for linear analysis of thin to thick laminated composite plates, is extended further for geometrically nonlinear analysis in this paper. The proposed element is based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and von-Karman's large deflection theory, and the total Lagrangian approach is employed to formulate the element. The deflection and rotation functions of the element boundary are obtained from Timoshenko's laminated composite beam functions. The developed element is simple in formulation, free from shear-locking, and include conventional engineering degrees of freedom. Numerical examples demonstrate that the element is accurate and efficient for large deformation, small rotation geometrically nonlinear analysis of thin to moderately thick laminated composite plates.

In romantic love, the link with transgression is made very frequently indeed, so frequently that we cannot simply be dealing with a way of construing as real an obstacle that is imagined because the actual satisfaction is prohibited. Rather, the fact that access to the object is seen as transgressive must be due to the fact that the object itself has something that prevents the relationship from occurring. That is, it is not the case that the object is merely imagined to be inaccessible when in actual fact there is no obstacle to satisfaction by means of it. Rather, the relationship to the object as source of love is also and at the same time a perverse relationship that, at least for a neurotic, causes anxiety.
