Silicoflagellates are described from Sites 588 (middle Eocene), 591 (middle Miocene to lower Pliocene), and 594 (middle Miocene to Quaternary) in the southwest Pacific. At Sites 591 and 594 a detailed silicoflagellate zonation is possible, although there are some obvious differences arising from the latitudinal position of the sites in the silicoflagellate assemblages. Comparison between the sequences recovered at Sites 591 and 206 (Leg 21) revealed two hiatuses in the latter, but helped to establish a zonation for this area from the lower Miocene to the Pleistocene and a correlation to standard nannoplankton zones. The stratigraphic implications of the taxonomy used by various authors and the species concept presented here are discussed in detail. Special reference is made to types described by Ehrenberg and to later synonyma, because the Ehrenberg collection is the base for all subsequent descriptions and evaluations of silicoflagellate taxa. Two new genera (Neonaviculopsis, Paramesocena), two new subspecies (Dictyocha fibula subsp. asymmetrica, Neonaviculopsis neonautica subsp. praenautica), and three new forms (Dictyocha perlaevis f. pentaradiata, Distephanus speculum subsp. speculum f. nonarius, and Mesocena ? hexalitha f. heptalitha) are described from the southwest Pacific Neogene and Pleistocene. Associated sponge spicules were noted and will be described in detail in a later paper, but some are documented on Plate 13.

Although sulfur is an essential element for marine primary production and critical for climate processes, little is known about the oceanic pool of non-volatile dissolved organic sulfur (DOS). We present a basin-scale distribution of solid phase extractable DOS in the East Atlantic Ocean and the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. While molar DOS versus dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) ratios of 0.11 ± 0.024 in Atlantic surface water resembled phytoplankton stoichiometry (S/N ~ 0.08), increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) versus DOS ratios and decreasing methionine-S yield demonstrated selective DOS removal and active involvement in marine biogeochemical cycles. Based on stoichiometric estimates, the minimum global inventory of marine DOS is 6.7 Pg S, exceeding all other marine organic sulfur reservoirs by an order of magnitude.

Software architectural evaluation is a key discipline used to identify, at early stages of a real-time system (RTS) development, the problems that may arise during its operation. Typical mechanisms supporting concurrency, such as semaphores, mutexes or monitors, usually lead to concurrency problems in execution time that are difficult to be identified, reproduced and solved. For this reason, it is crucial to understand the root causes of these problems and to provide support to identify and mitigate them at early stages of the system lifecycle. This paper aims to present the results of a research work oriented to the development of the tool called ‘Deadlock Risk Evaluation of Architectural Models’ (DREAM) to assess deadlock risk in architectural models of an RTS. A particular architectural style, Pipelines of Processes in Object-Oriented Architectures–UML (PPOOA) was used to represent platform-independent models of an RTS architecture supported by the PPOOA –Visio tool. We validated the technique presented here by using several case studies related to RTS development and comparing our results with those from other deadlock detection approaches, supported by different tools. Here we present two of these case studies, one related to avionics and the other to planetary exploration robotics. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

ABSTRACT The objective of this project is to create a model for managing and controlling the well integrity. It is based on the monitoring of the operation and the analysis of its design and construction. Therefore a technological tool is designed; to allow having the necessary information and to manage it according to international standards. At the beginning of the project, a literature review of the most relevant studies on well integrity was performed. It was made to enter into context and to analyze the history of the models and available similar tools. It included texts from the association SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers), universities from Norway and Mexico, and companies like ECOPETROL. Secondly there has been a study of the databases. It began with an analysis of PPDM (The Professional Petroleum Data Management Association) standards; about which, the tool is made. After the analysis, Access was considered the best option because it is easily accessible and incorporates the reporting module. In order to create the solution a data model was designed. It was conditioned by the requirements of integrity of wells, in the Norwegian standards and in the NORSOK D010 recommendations guide for well integrity of the Norwegian oil and gas Association. This model was performed by a database in the Access platform, and using Access language, combined with SQL programming. Once the data model is defined and built, it is possible to create a layer of data visualization. A report of this well is defined to create it. This report will be visible for the user according to their roles and responsibilities.

= Coupling shop floor software system (SFS) with the set of production equipment (SPE) becomes a complex task. It involves open and proprietary standards, information and communication technologies among other tools and techniques. Due to market turbulence, either custom solutions or standards based solutions eventually require a considerable effort of adaptation. Loose coupling concept has been identified in the organizational design community as a compensator for organization survival. Its presence reduces organization reaction to environment changes. In this paper the results obtained by the organizational de sign community are identified, translated and organized to support the SFS-SPE integration problem solution. A classical loose coupling model developed by organizational studies community is abstracted and translated to the area of interest. Key aspects are identified to be used as promoters of SFS-SPE loose coupling and presented in a form of a reference scheme. Furthermore, this reference scheme is proposed here as a basis for the design and implementation of a generic coupling solution or coupling framework, that is included as a loose coupling stage between SFS and SPE. A validation example with various sets of manufacturing equipment, using different physical communication media, controller commands, programming languages and wire protocols is presented, showing an acceptable level of autonomy gained by the SFS.
