Building secure systems is difficult for many reasons. This paper deals with two of the main challenges: (i) the lack of security expertise in development teams, and (ii) the inadequacy of existing methodologies to support developers who are not security experts. The security standard ISO 14508 (Common Criteria) together with secure design techniques such as UMLsec can provide the security expertise, knowledge, and guidelines that are needed. However, security expertise and guidelines are not stated explicitly in the Common Criteria. They are rather phrased in security domain terminology and difficult to understand for developers. This means that some general security and secure design expertise are required to fully take advantage of the Common Criteria and UMLsec. In addition, there is the problem of tracing security requirements and objectives into solution design, which is needed for proof of requirements fulfilment. This paper describes a security requirements engineering methodology called SecReq. SecReq combines three techniques: the Common Criteria, the heuristic requirements editorHeRA, andUMLsec. SecReqmakes systematic use of the security engineering knowledge contained in the Common Criteria and UMLsec, as well as security-related heuristics in the HeRA tool. The integrated SecReq method supports early detection of security-related issues (HeRA), their systematic refinement guided by the Common Criteria, and the ability to trace security requirements into UML design models. A feedback loop helps reusing experiencewithin SecReq and turns the approach into an iterative process for the secure system life-cycle, also in the presence of system evolution.

The electron and hole mobility of nickel-bis(dithiolene) (NiDT) are determined in a metal– insulator–semiconductor (MIS)structure using admittance spectroscopy. The relaxation times found in the admittance spectra are attributed to the diffusion time of carriers to reach the insulator interface and via Einstein’s relation this yields the mobility values. In this way, an electron mobility of 1:9 104 cm2=Vs and a hole mobility of 3:9 106 cm2=Vs were found. It is argued that the low mobility is caused by an amphoteric mid-gap trap level. The activation energy for electrons and holes from these traps is found to be 0.46 eV and 0.40 eV, respectively.

ATP binding cassette (ABC) and solute carrier (SLC) transporters are responsible for the majority of the transcellular movement of various substrates, including drugs, among epithelial cells. Despite the well characterized regulation of influx (SLC) and efflux (ABC) transporters by endogenous mediators, such as inflammatory cytokines, little is known about how changes in oxygen levels may affect expression of these transporters. In this study we showed that the expression of SLC22A4, SLC22A5, SLC22A1, SLC02B1, SLC10A2, ABCC2 and ABCC3 transporters is upregulated by hypoxia in HT29 colon carcinoma cells, but not in HepG2 hepatocarcinoma cells. Moreover, OCTN1 (SLC22A4), OCT1 (SLC22A1) and OATP-B (SLC02B1) transporter expression is also induced by inflammatory cytokines but in a smaller extent than in hypoxia. Furthermore our experiments indicate that there is no cross talk between HIF-1 and NF-κB pathways in HT-29 cells, but these two pathways act simultaneously activating common genes, such as, some SLC and ABC transporters. Our preliminary results from studies with an in vivo murine model of colitis, suggest that HIF-1is stabilized and OCTN1 is strongly induced during severe inflammation, which can be relevant for a recovery from the inflammatory process. We have also been interested in the distribution of HIF-1α variants among different ethnic groups as well as their contribution for cancer risk. Thus, we have demonstrated that there is an ethnicity-related variation in the frequency of the C1772T (P582S) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the HIF-1α gene. Furthermore, we performed a case-control study in a breast cancer population and our results suggest that there is no association between this SNP or the rare G1790A (A588T) SNP and the incidence of breast cancer. Taken together, the results obtained in this study contribute to a better knowledge of drug influx and efflux during hypoxia and inflammation as well as to the understanding of the pharmacogenetic variability of the HIF-1.

The decoupling of CAP payments leads production decisions and resources allocation to be more dependent on market prices and competitive advantages. The objective of this paper is to assess the effects of CAP trends on the montado/dehesa traditional ecosystem of Mediterranean regions in terms of farm income, land, labour and capital. A positive mathematical supply model disaggregated by the montado agro-forestry production systems of the Alentejo region in southern Portugal is developed. The results show that decoupling payments of CAP have negative economic effects on agricultural activities and resource use. Agricultural income increases with single farm payments but the foreseen increases in prices do not compensate the loss of the Agenda 2000 area payments in terms of competitiveness. These results reinforce the need to promote alternative agricultural and non-agricultural activities and policies in Mediterranean rural European areas and regions.
