Recent years have seen the development and implementation of a range of multi-disciplinary and partnership approaches to managing risk in known sex offenders, involving collaboration between justice and human services agencies. Potential barriers to the development of effective multidisciplinary practices arise when participating professionals hold different attitudes about those they are responsible for managing. This paper examines differences in attitudes towards sex offenders in two professional groups – police officers and allied health workers. The results suggest that police officers tend to hold more negative views than those who deliver treatment and support services. They are more likely to believe that offenders cannot change their behaviour and should be subject to more punitive sanctions. These findings are discussed in relation to judgements of both risk and dangerousness and associated decisions about the appropriate management of sex offenders in multi-agency and multi-disciplinary working forums.

The treatment alliance is the arena in which psychopharmacological and other therapeutic interventions occur. The nature and quality of the treatment alliance may affect adherence to treatment and the realization of the benefits of effective pharmacological treatment in clinical practice. It is an area that has attracted little systematic study, despite the available evidence suggesting that it plays a measurable role in clinical outcomes.

Aim: This article outlines the development and implementation of a collaborative feeding care plan (FCP) for stroke patients in an acute stroke ward. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the impact of an ecological intervention to improve eating independence in an acute stroke ward environment. Methods: An action research approach comprising seven stages—determine the initial problem, develop the care plan, act, reflect and monitor progress, evaluate, reflect, and refine plan—was used to track environmental changes during the development and implementation of the FCP in an acute stroke ward in an Australian regional hospital. During the evaluation phase, six allied health staff completed a survey on the FCP. The staff also completed an observation assessment integrating the Eating Disability Scale, Functional Independence Measure and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure with 12 participants with acute stoke (participants with FCP=6; participants without FCP=6). Results: The FCP group showed significant improvements in upper limb independence (p=0.046), when comparing mean admission scores (3.5±0.97) with discharge scores (4.17±2.14). Clinically significant improvements in levels of collaboration between health professionals were also demonstrated. Conclusions: The changes in team collaboration and the patient’s upper limb independence indicate how environmental change can influence acute stroke patient outcomes. It is recommended that this study be expanded to further explore the effect of ecological interventions and change.

Business intelligence (BI) offers opportunities for managers to master vast data resources for operational and strategic gains, and allows BI-based organizations to generate significant business value. While several researchers emphasized the importance of BI to assist making quality decisions, no study explored the use of BI for improved understanding of business before such decisions are made and assessing the impact of the actions derived from these decisions. To fill this gap we use the theory of organizational sensemaking. The presented research uses hermeneutic phenomenology to study the experiences of decision-makers in using BI-generated insights to guide their actions while altering business processes, structures and information. The study emphasizes the necessity of using BI in the creation and maintenance of individual and organizational identity, as well as, enactment of this identity on the business and its environment, which need to be molded in response to changing circumstances.

As a popular technique in recommender systems, Collaborative Filtering (CF) has been the focus of significant attention in recent years, however, its privacy-related issues, especially for the neighborhood-based CF methods, cannot be overlooked. The aim of this study is to address these privacy issues in the context of neighborhood-based CF methods by proposing a Private Neighbor Collaborative Filtering (PNCF) algorithm. This algorithm includes two privacy preserving operations: Private Neighbor Selection and Perturbation. Using the item-based method as an example, Private Neighbor Selection is constructed on the basis of the notion of differential privacy, meaning that neighbors are privately selected for the target item according to its similarities with others. Recommendation-Aware Sensitivity and a re-designed differential privacy mechanism are introduced in this operation to enhance the performance of recommendations. A Perturbation operation then hides the true ratings of selected neighbors by adding Laplace noise. The PNCF algorithm reduces the magnitude of the noise introduced from the traditional differential privacy mechanism. Moreover, a theoretical analysis is provided to show that the proposed algorithm can resist a KNN attack while retaining the accuracy of recommendations. The results from experiments on two real datasets show that the proposed PNCF algorithm can obtain a rigid privacy guarantee without high accuracy loss. © 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V. As pharmaceutical firms try to market their products and reduce costs, vertically integrated structureshamper innovation processes. Yet, pharmaceutical firms must innovate to compete. Outsourcing knowledgeintensive activities to knowledge process organizations (KPOs) serves to reduce innovation process obstacles.Grounded in diffusion theory and strategic management literature, this conceptual paper explores fourinterrelated strategic concepts: core competencies, economies of scale and scope, knowledge sharing,and learning. This paper claims that (a) accumulated core competencies of multinational pharmaceuticalcompanies (MPCs) erode over time and these companies become dependent on KPOs (b) MPCs mustunderstand how KPOs manage core competencies (c) economies of scope benefit KPOs enabling them tosustain competitive advantages for their MPC partners, meanwhile the benefits from economies of both scaleand scope shift from MPCs to KPOs (d) KPOs need to monitor their rate of learning to remain competitive.The paper identifies implications for industrial managers and directions for future research.

Requirements engineering (RE) often needs creativity in a form where interactions among stakeholders are particularly important: collaborative creativity. However, few studies have explicitly concentrated on understanding collaborative creativity in RE, resulting in a lack of well-founded advice for practitioners on how to support this aspect of RE. Through an online survey, this paper seeks empirical validation for a framework of factors characterising collaborative creative processes in RE. Within the limits of the validity of the study, the results show support for the utility of the framework: collaborative creativity seems to be a linear function of the mean score to all factors in the framework. Factors can be grouped, and the specific impact of each group on collaboration, value and novelty can be assessed.

Obesity in our childbearing population has increased to epidemic proportions in developed countries; efforts to address this issue need to focus on prevention. The Health in Preconception, Pregnancy and Postbirth (HIPPP) Collaborative - a group of researchers, practitioners, policymakers and end-users - was formed to take up the challenge to address this issue as a partnership. Application of systems thinking, participatory systems modelling and group model building was used to establish research questions aiming to optimise periconception lifestyle, weight and health. Our goal was to reduce the burden of maternal obesity through systems change.
