Diastereomers (SRu,Sc)-1a and (RRu,Sc)-1b, in a ratio of 85: 15 and formulated as [Ru(η-MeC6H4Pri-p)Cl(L*)], have been prepared by treating [{Ru(η-MeC6H4Pri-p)Cl2}2] with the sodium salt of (S)-α-methylbenzylsalicylaldimine (HL*) in tetrahydrofuran at –70 °C. The reaction of 1(1a+1b) with AgClO4 in acetone followed by an addition of PPh3 or 4-methylpyridine (4Me-py) leads to the formation of adducts [Ru(η-MeC6H4Pri-p)(PPh3)(L*)]ClO42[(SRu,Sc)2a, (FRu,Sc)2b] and [Ru(η-MeC6H4Pri-p)(4Me-py)(L*)]ClO43[(SRu,Sc)3a, (RRu,Sc)3b] in the diastereomeric ratios (SRu,Sc) : (RRu,Sc) of 2 : 98 and 76 : 24, respectively. Complex 1 crystallises with equal numbers of 1a and 1b molecules in an asymmetric unit of monoclinic space group P21 with a= 10.854(1), b= 17.090(1), c= 12.808(4)Å, β= 110.51(1)°, and Z= 4. The structure was refined to R= 0.0552 and R′= 0.0530 with 2893 reflections having I[gt-or-equal] 1.5σ(I). The absolute configurations of the chiral centres in the optically pure single crystal of the PPh3 adduct have been obtained from an X-ray study. Crystals of formulation [Ru(η-MeC6H4Pri-p)-(PPh3)(L*)]2[ClO4][PF6]·1.5 CHCl3, obtained in presence of both ClO4 and PF6 anions, belong to the non-centric triclinic space group P1 with a= 10.852(2), b= 14.028(1), c= 15.950(2)Å, α= 91.51(1), β= 105.97(1), γ= 106.11(1)°, and Z= 2. The final residuals were R= 0.0713, R′= 0.0752 with 7283 reflections having I[gt-or-equal] 2.5σ(I). The crystal structures of 1a,1b, and the PPh3 adduct (2b,2b′) consist of a ruthenium(II) centre bonded to a η-p-cymene, a bidentate chelating Schiff base, and a unidentate ligand (Cl or PPh3). The chirooptical properties of the complexes have been studied using 1H NMR and CD spectral data. The presence of a low-energy barrier for the intermediate involved in these reactions, showing both retention as well as inversion of the metal configuration, is discussed.

The higher substrate and chiral auxiliary concentration is a pre-requisite to obtain efficient separation of H-1 NMR signals of enantiomers. The higher concentration of chiral lanthanide shift reagents provides broadened spectral lines resulting in a severe loss of resolution between the enantiomer resonances. In order to circumvent such difficulties, herein we present the application and the usefulness of a selective F-1 decoupled correlation (COSY) experiment which yields proton decoupled proton spectra in the indirect dimension. The potentiality of the experiment is demonstrated on several chiral compounds possessing different functional groups, employing either a lanthanide shift reagent or a solvating reagent as chiral auxiliaries. Lamination-dependent shear corrective terms in the analysis of bending of laminated plates are derived from a priori assumed linear thicknesswise distributions for gradients of transverse shear stresses by using CLPT inplane stresses in the two in-plane equilibrium equations of elasticity in each ply. In the development of a general model for angle-ply laminated plates, special cases like cylindrical bending of laminates in either direction, symmetric laminates, cross-ply laminates, antisymmetric angle-ply laminates, homogeneous plates are taken into consideration. Adding these corrective terms to the assumed displacements in (i) Classical Laminate Plate Theory (CLPT) and (ii) Classical Laminate Shear Deformation Theory (CLSDT), two new refined lamination-dependent shear deformation models are developed. Closed form solutions from these models are obtained for antisymmetric angle-ply laminates under sinusoidal load for a type of simply supported boundary conditions. Results obtained from the present models and also from Ren's model (1987) are compared with each other.

Lamination-dependent shear corrective terms in the analysis of flexure of laminates are derived from a priori assumed linear thicknesswise distributions for gradients of transverse shear stresses and using them in the two in-plane equilibrium equations of elasticity in each ply. Adding these corrective terms to (i) Classical Laminate Plate Theory (CLPT) displacements and (ii) Classical Laminate Shear Deformation Theory (CLSDT) displacements, four new refined lamination-dependent shear deformation models for angle-ply laminates are developed. Performance of these models is evaluated by comparing the results from these models with those from exact elasticity solutions for antisymmetric 2-ply laminates and for 4-ply [15/-15](s) laminates. In general, the model with shear corrective terms based on CLPT and added to CLSDT displacements is sufficient and predicts good estimates, both qualitatively and quantitatively, for all displacements and stresses.

We investigate a model containing two species of one-dimensional fermions interacting via a gauge field determined by the positions of all particles of the opposite species. The model can be salved exactly via a simple unitary transformation. Nevertheless, correlation functions exhibit nontrivial interaction-dependent exponents. A similar model defined on a lattice is introduced and solved. Various generalizations, e.g., to the case of internal symmetries of the fermions, are discussed. The present treatment also clarifies certain aspects of Luttinger's original solution of the "Luttinger model."

The physics potential of e(+) e(-) linear colliders is summarized in this report. These machines are planned to operate in the first phase at a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV, before being scaled up to about 1 TeV. In the second phase of the operation, a final energy of about 2 TeV is expected. The machines will allow us to perform precision tests of the heavy particles in the Standard Model, the top quark and the electroweak bosons. They are ideal facilities for exploring the properties of Higgs particles, in particular in the intermediate mass range. New vector bosons and novel matter particles in extended gauge theories can be searched for and studied thoroughly. The machines provide unique opportunities for the discovery of particles in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the spectrum of Higgs particles, the supersymmetric partners of the electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons, and of the matter particles. High precision analyses of their properties and interactions will allow for extrapolations to energy scales close to the Planck scale where gravity becomes significant. In alternative scenarios, i.e. compositeness models, novel matter particles and interactions can be discovered and investigated in the energy range above the existing colliders lip to the TeV scale. Whatever scenario is realized in Nature, the discovery potential of e(+) e(-) linear colliders and the high precision with which the properties of particles and their interactions can be analyzed, define an exciting physics program complementary to hadron machines. We show by numerical simulations that discretized versions of commonly studied continuum nonlinear growth equations (such as the Kardar-Parisi-Zhangequation and the Lai-Das Sarma-Villain equation) and related atomistic models of epitaxial growth have a generic instability in which isolated pillars (or grooves) on an otherwise flat interface grow in time when their height (or depth) exceeds a critical value. Depending on the details of the model, the instability found in the discretized version may or may not be present in the truly continuum growth equation, indicating that the behavior of discretized nonlinear growth equations may be very different from that of their continuum counterparts. This instability can be controlled either by the introduction of higher-order nonlinear terms with appropriate coefficients or by restricting the growth of pillars (or grooves) by other means. A number of such ''controlled instability'' models are studied by simulation. For appropriate choice of the parameters used for controlling the instability, these models exhibit intermittent behavior, characterized by multiexponent scaling of height fluctuations, over the time interval during which the instability is active. The behavior found in this regime is very similar to the ''turbulent'' behavior observed in recent simulations of several one- and two-dimensional atomistic models of epitaxial growth.

A two-time scale stochastic approximation algorithm is proposed for simulation-based parametric optimization of hidden Markov models, as an alternative to the traditional approaches to ''infinitesimal perturbation analysis.'' Its convergence is analyzed, and a queueing example is presented.

Non-exponential electron transfer kinetics in complex systems are often analyzed in terms of a quenched, static disorder model. In this work we present an alternative analysis in terms of a simple dynamic disorder model where the solvent is characterized by highly non-exponential dynamics. We consider both low and high barrier reactions. For the former, the main result is a simple analytical expression for the survival probability of the reactant. In this case, electron transfer, in the long time, is controlled by the solvent polarization relaxation-in agreement with the analyses of Rips and Jortner and of Nadler and Marcus. The short time dynamics is also non-exponential, but for different reasons. The high barrier reactions, on the other hand, show an interesting dynamic dependence on the electronic coupling element, V-el.

The problem of spurious patterns in neural associative memory models is discussed, Some suggestions to solve this problem from the literature are reviewed and their inadequacies are pointed out, A solution based on the notion of neural self-interaction with a suitably chosen magnitude is presented for the Hebb learning rule. For an optimal learning rule based on linear programming, asymmetric dilution of synaptic connections is presented as another solution to the problem of spurious patterns, With varying percentages of asymmetric dilution it is demonstrated numerically that this optimal learning rule leads to near total suppression of spurious patterns. For practical usage of neural associative memory networks a combination of the two solutions with the optimal learning rule is recommended to be the best proposition.

It is well-known that the senses (or the handedness) of the helical assemblies formed from compressed monolayers and bilayers of chiral amphiphiles are highly specific about the chirality of the monomers concerned. We present here a molecular approach that can successfully predict the senses of such helical morphologies. The present approach is based on a reduced tractable description in terms of an effective pair potential (EPP) which depends on the distance of separation and the relative orientations of the two amphiphiles. This approach explicitly considers the pairwise intermolecular interactions between the groups attached to the chiral centers of the two neighboring amphiphiles. It is found that for a pair of the same kind of enantiomers the minimum energy configuration favors a twist angle between molecules and that this twist from neighbor to neighbor gives rise to the helicity of the aggregate. From the known twist angles at the minimum energy configuration the successive arrangement of an array of molecules can be predicted. Therefore, the sense of the helicity can be predicted from the molecular interactions. The predicted senses of the helical structures are in complete agreement with all known experimental results.

The soil moisture characteristic (SMC) forms an important input to mathematical models of water and solute transport in the unsaturated-soil zone. Owing to their simplicity and ease of use, texture-based regression models are commonly used to estimate the SMC from basic soil properties. In this study, the performances of six such regression models were evaluated on three soils. Moisture characteristics generated by the regression models were statistically compared with the characteristics developed independently from laboratory and in-situ retention data of the soil profiles. Results of the statistical performance evaluation, while providing useful information on the errors involved in estimating the SMC, also highlighted the importance of the nature of the data set underlying the regression models. Among the models evaluated, the one possessing an underlying data set of in-situ measurements was found to be the best estimator of the in-situ SMC for all the soils. Considerable errors arose when a textural model based on laboratory data was used to estimate the field retention characteristics of unsaturated soils.

A range of novel chiral tellurium compounds having an azomethine functional group in the position ortho to tellurium has been synthesized by the reaction of the tellurium-containing aldehydes bis(o-formylphenyl) telluride (1) and o-(butyltelluro)benzaldehyde (4) with chiral amines (R)-(+)-(1-pheylethylamine) and (1R,2S)-(-)-norephedrine, respectively. The precursor aldehydes were prepared by using a reported procedure with slight but advantageous modifications. During the preparation of o-(butyltelluro)benzaldehyde, interesting side products, namely bis(o-formylphenyl) ditelluride ethylene acetal 5, bis(o-formylphenyl) tritelluride (6), and bis(o-formylphenyl) ditelluride (7) were isolated in moderate yields. The ditelluride 7 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The liquid Schiff bases 10 and 11 were further characterized by derivatizing with liquid bromine. The title compound was obtained in excellent yield by reacting the Schiff base 11 with elemental bromine. Detailed NMR studies indicated the presence of a rigid environment for the hydroxyl group. Single-crystal X-ray determinations of the crystals obtained from the different batches indicated. the presence of the two pseudopolymorphic forms 13a and 13b, respectively. In the case of 13a there is one molecule of CH3CN as solvent of crystallization, whereas in 13b half a molecule of CH3CN per molecule of the title compound lies along the 2-fold axis. In 13a the hydroxyl hydrogen is hydrogen-bonded to the nitrogen of the solvent molecule, whereas in 13b it is hydrogen-bonded to the bromine of the neighboring molecule.
