Research in business dynamics has been advancing rapidly in the last years but the translation of the new knowledge to industrial policy design is slow. One striking aspect in the policy area is that although research and analysis do not identify the existence of an specific optimal rate of business creation and business exit, governments everywhere have adopted business start-up support programs with the implicit principle that the more the better. The purpose of this article is to contribute to understand the implications of the available research for policy design. Economic analysis has identified firm heterogeneity as being the most salient characteristic of industrial dynamics, and so a better knowledge of the different types of entrepreneur, their behavior and their specific contribution to innovation and growth would enable us to see into the ‘black box’ of business dynamics and improve the design of appropriate public policies. The empirical analysis performed here shows that not all new business have the same impact on relevant economic variables, and that self-employment is of quite a different economic nature to that of firms with employees. It is argued that public programs should not promote indiscriminate entry but rather give priority to able entrants with survival capacities. Survival of entrants is positively related to their size at birth. Innovation and investment improve the likelihood of survival of new manufacturing start-ups. Investment in R&D increases the risk of failure in new firms, although it improves the competitiveness of incumbents.

Motivated by the modelling of structured parasite populations in aquaculture we consider a class of physiologically structured population models, where individuals may be recruited into the population at different sizes in general. That is, we consider a size-structured population model with distributed states-at-birth. The mathematical model which describes the evolution of such a population is a first order nonlinear partial integro-differential equation of hyperbolic type. First, we use positive perturbation arguments and utilise results from the spectral theory of semigroups to establish conditions for the existence of a positive equilibrium solution of our model. Then we formulate conditions that guarantee that the linearised system is governed by a positive quasicontraction semigroup on the biologically relevant state space. We also show that the governing linear semigroup is eventually compact, hence growth properties of the semigroup are determined by the spectrum of its generator. In case of a separable fertility function we deduce a characteristic equation and investigate the stability of equilibrium solutions in the general case using positive perturbation arguments.

The specific interactions of the pairs laminin binding protein (LBP)-purified tick-borne encephalitis viral surface protein E and certain recombinant fragments of this protein, as well as West Nile viral surface protein E and certain recombinant fragments of that protein, are studied by combined methods of single-molecule dynamic force spectroscopy (SMDFS), enzyme immunoassay and optical surface waves-based biosensor measurements. The experiments were performed at neutral pH (7.4) and acid pH (5.3) conditions. The data obtained confirm the role of LBP as a cell receptor for two typical viral species of the Flavivirus genus. A comparison of these data with similar data obtained for another cell receptor of this family, namely human αVβ3 integrin, reveals that both these receptors are very important. Studying the specific interaction between the cell receptors in question and specially prepared monoclonal antibodies against them, we could show that both interaction sites involved in the process of virus-cell interaction remain intact at pH 5.3. At the same time, for these acid conditions characteristic for an endosome during flavivirus-cell membrane fusion, SMDFS data reveal the existence of a force-induced (effective already for forces as small as 30-70 pN) sharp globule-coil transition for LBP and LBP-fragments of protein E complexes. We argue that this conformational transformation, being an analog of abrupt first-order phase transition and having similarity with the famous Rayleigh hydrodynamic instability, might be indispensable for the flavivirus-cell membrane fusion process. The pharmacological activities of a water extract (WE) of Ageratum conyzoides L, a plant populary known for its analgesic and anti-inflamatory properties, were studied in vivo and in vitro preparations. Oral administration (p.o.) of the water extract (WE, 0.1 to 5 g/Kg) to rats and mice induced quietness and reduced the spontaneous motility. the sleeping time induced by sodium pentobarbital (50 mg/Kg, i.p.) in mice was not altered by previous treatment with We (2 g/Kg, p.o.). The same treatment did not influence the paw edema induced by carrageenan or dextran, nor did it reduce the chronic paw edema induced by complete Freund's adjuvant or formaldehyde in rats. The tail flick response in immersion test and writhings induced by 0.8%acetic acid in mice were not altered by WE either. In isolated guinea-pig ilea WE (0.4 to 4 mg/ml) did not alter the EC50 values of histamine or acetylcholine, but reduced the maximal response to the agonists by 20 to 50%. We (0.01 to 10 mg/ml) produced tonic contractions of the ileal smooth muscle proportional to the doses, reaching a maximum of 75% relatively to the maximum obtained with histamine. Those contractions were blocked by diphenhydramine (10 nM) and reduced by 32% in presence of atropine (10 nM). The results indicated that oral treatment of rodents with A. conyzoides L neither reduced the inflammatory edema nor did it decrease the reaction to pain stimuli. In vitro the extract presented an unexpected histamine-like activity characteristic of a partial agonist. The results did not confirm the popular medicinal indications of the plant.

Practice guidelines recommend outpatient care for selected patients with non-massive pulmonary embolism (PE), but fail to specify how these low-risk patients should be identified. Using data from U.S. patients, we previously derived the Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (PESI), a prediction rule that risk stratifies patients with PE. We sought to validate the PESI in a European patient cohort. We prospectively validated the PESI in patients with PE diagnosed at six emergency departments in three European countries. We used baseline data for the rule's 11 prognostic variables to stratify patients into five risk classes (I-V) of increasing probability of mortality. The outcome was overall mortality at 90 days after presentation. To assess the accuracy of the PESI to predict mortality, we estimated the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values for low- (risk classes I/II) versus higher-risk patients (risk classes III-V), and the discriminatory power using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Among 357 patients with PE, overall mortality was 5.9%, ranging from 0% in class I to 17.9% in class V. The 186 (52%) low-risk patients had an overall mortality of 1.1% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.1-3.8%) compared to 11.1% (95% CI: 6.8-16.8%) in the 171 (48%) higher-risk patients. The PESI had a high sensitivity (91%, 95% CI: 71-97%) and a negative predictive value (99%, 95% CI: 96-100%) for predicting mortality. The area under the ROC curve was 0.78 (95% CI: 0.70-0.86). The PESI reliably identifies patients with PE who are at low risk of death and who are potential candidates for outpatient care. The PESI may help physicians make more rational decisions about hospitalization for patients with PE.

Brucellosis has become a rare entity in many industrialised countries, because of animal vaccination programs. We report a first case in the literature of Brucella abscess in the hip region observed in Switzerland in a subject without any clear risk factor, leading us to conclude that abscess formation can be a rare manifestation of brucellosis. Because it can present in many different forms and locations without having characteristic clinics, a high index of suspicion is needed for the diagnosis even if the patient is a healthy athlete with no clear way of obvious route for contamination, and this even more if all the common causes of athletic hip pain have been ruled out.

Un seuil de positivité de 9 pg/mg permettait de détecter les consommateurs à risque.SUMMARYChronic and excessive alcohol consumption is associated with a significant increase of morbidity and mortality. The identification of a reliable biomarker to detect chronic and excessive alcohol consumers would be valuable to prevent alcohol's harmful effects. The combined analysis of 2 or more hepatic biomarkers, which are known to be increased following sustained alcohol consumption, is usually applied to enhance the diagnostic performance in identifying chronic and excessive alcohol consumers. However, their diagnostic value is often limited by their lack of sensitivity and / or specificity and their combination is generally recommended to improve diagnosis. To date, there are no reliable biomarkers available for diagnosing chronic and excessive alcohol consumption. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the relevance of EtG, a direct alcohol metabolite, as a biomarker of chronic and excessive alcohol consumption, thanks to its characteristic to incorporate into hair. First, a review of literature on the use of EtG was carried out. EtG demonstrated strong potential in detecting chronic and excessive alcohol consumption. However, the lack of reliable cutoff and the unawareness of factors that affect the EtG incorporation into hair were stressed. To investigate these points, two studies have been conducted: (1) a nonclinical study in rats to determine the factors affecting the incorporation of EtG into hair as well as to investigate the relationship between the amount of alcohol administered and the EtG concentration measured in hair; and (2) a clinical study to determine the diagnostic performance of EtG as a biomarker for the identification of chronic and excessive alcohol consumers. A sensitive and specific Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry coupled to tandem Mass Spectrometry method has been developed and applied to hair EtG analysis.Bloodstream seemed to play a major role in the EtG incorporation into hair. EtG incorporation into rat hair was not affected by hair pigmentation. EtG concentration in rat hair appeared to reflect the EtG concentration in blood. Besides, EtG demonstrated strong diagnostic performance in detecting both heavy alcohol consumption and at-risk alcohol consumption, and clearly outperformed diagnostic performance of hepatic biomarkers. In contrast with hepatic biomarkers, EtG was not associated with age, gender or body mass index. A reliable cutoff value of 25 pg/mg allowed to detect heavy drinkers; a reliable cutoff value of 9 pg/mg allowed to detect at-risk drinkers.

? Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi colonize the roots of most monocotyledons and dicotyledons despite their different root architecture and cell patterning. Among the cereal hosts of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, Oryza sativa (rice) possesses a peculiar root system composed of three different types of roots: crown roots; large lateral roots; and fine lateral roots. Characteristic is the constitutive formation of aerenchyma in crown roots and large lateral roots and the absence of cortex from fine lateral roots. Here, we assessed the distribution of colonization by Glomus intraradices within this root system and determined its effect on root system architecture. ? Large lateral roots are preferentially colonized, and fine lateral roots are immune to arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization. Fungal preference for large lateral roots also occurred in sym mutants that block colonization of the root beyond rhizodermal penetration. ? Initiation of large lateral roots is significantly induced by G. intraradices colonization and does not require a functional common symbiosis signaling pathway from which some components are known to be needed for symbiosis-mediated lateral root induction in Medicago truncatula. ? Our results suggest variation of symbiotic properties among the different rice root-types and induction of the preferred tissue by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Furthermore, signaling for arbuscular mycorrhizal-elicited alterations of the root system differs between rice and M. truncatula.

Limiting dilution analysis was used to quantify Trypanosoma cruzi in the lymph nodes, liver and heart of Swiss and C57 B1/10 mice. The results showed that, in Swiss and B1/10 mice infected with T. cruzi Y strain, the number of parasites/mg of tissue increased during the course of the infection in both types of mice, although a grater number of parasites were observed in heart tissue from Swiss mice than from B1/10. With regard to liver tissue, it was observed that the parasite load in the initial phase of infection was higher than in heart. In experiments using T. cruzi Colombian strain, the parasite load in the heart of Swiss and B1/10 mice increased relatively slowly, although high levels of parasitization were nonetheless observable by the end of the infection. As for the liver and lymph nodes, the concentration of parasites was lower over the entire course of infection than in heart. Both strains thus maintained their characteristic tissue tropisms. The limiting dilution assay (LDA) proved to be an appropriate method for more precise quantification of T. cruzi, comparing favorably with other direct microscopic methods that only give approximate scores.

The diagnosis of tick-borne diseases such as babesiosis still depends on observing the parasite in the infected erythrocyte. Microscopic observation is tedious and often problematic in both early and carrier infections. Better diagnostic methods are needed to prevent clinical disease, especially when susceptible cattle are being moved into disease enzootic areas. This study evaluates two techniques for early diagnosis of Babesia bovis infections in cattle, DNA probes specific for the organism and fluorescent probes specific nucleic acid. The radioisotopically labeled DNA probes are used in slot blot hybridizations whith lysed blood samples, not purified DNA. Thusfar, the probe is specific for B. bovis and can detect as few as 1000 B. bovis parasites in 10µl of blood. The specificity of the fluorescent probe depends on the characteristic morphology of the babesia in whole blood samples, as determined microscopically. The fluorescent probe detects as afew as 10,000 B. bovis parasites in 10*l as blood. The application of each method for alboratory and field use is discussed.
