Sporobolus stapfianus Gandoger, one of ~40 known ‘anabiotic’grass species (i.e. ‘able to regain vital activity from a state of latent life’), is the most versatile tool for research into desiccation tolerance in vegetative grass tissue. Current knowledge on this species is presented, including the features that suit it for investigations into the plant’s ability to survive dehydration of its leaf protoplasm. The main contributors to desiccation tolerance in S. stapfianus leaves appear to be: accumulation during dehydration of protectants of membranes and proteins; mechanisms limiting oxidative damage; a retention of protein synthetic activity in late stages of drying that is linked with changes in gene expression and in the proteomic array; and an ability to retain net synthesis of ATP during drying. S. stapfianus exemplifies an advanced stage of an evolutionary trend in desiccation tolerant plants towards increased importance of the dehydration phase (for induction of tolerance, for synthesis of protectants and for proteomic changes).

On July 26–29, 2010 the 13th International Myopia Conference was held in Tübingen, Germany and included 17 separate symposia, each with 3–5 presentations. Here, in a single paper, the chairs of those Symposia describe the scientific advances noted at the conference and include the full abstracts of the individual myopia papers presented in each symposium along with the authors and their institutions. The 17 Symposia covered 7 topics: Why Study the Mechanisms of Myopia?; Novel Approaches to Risk Factors; Signaling Eye Growth- How Could Basic Biology Be Translated into Clinical Insights?; Where Are Genetic and Proteomic Approaches Leading?; How Does Visual Function Contribute to and Interact with Ametropia?; Does Eye Shape Matter?; Why Ametropia at All?

This paper summarizes the views, obtained via a survey instrument created by the authors and reported in studies by Stout and Wygal, of 22 accounting educator teaching exemplars from Australia. Each of these individuals has been cited for teaching excellence through receipt of one or more formal teaching awards. The paper responds to calls in Australia for increased attention to the dimensions of teaching effectiveness and to initiatives in the United States calling for a broader sharing of information among members of the academy regarding the characteristics of teaching effectiveness. Little direct evidence from the field of accounting education is available to date regarding such characteristics or antecedents of teaching effectiveness in the student learning environment. Our research therefore extends in a fundamental way the work of Stice and Stocks and Stout and Wygal. Specifically, perceptions from a sample of award-winning non-US faculties regarding the ‘drivers of teaching effectiveness’ in accounting education are recorded and analyzed. In decreasing order of perceived importance, drivers of teaching effectiveness are: having a student focus; commitment to teaching (as a profession); high levels of preparation/organization; the ability to link subject matter to the practice environment; and, instructor skills and attributes. This paper adds to our understanding of the drivers of teaching effectiveness and begins the process of creating a worldwide knowledge base in accounting education. The paper should be of interest to accounting faculty members interested in improving their teaching effectiveness and/or mentoring junior faculty members.

This researcher enhances understandings about the psychological and surrounding circumstances, contributing towards older prisoners' treatment by others. Participants completed a questionnaire, interviews, and mention that older prisoners, and themselves as professionals, could be at risk of harm. This is linked to such conditions as budget constraints and other prison conditions.

Correctly determining witness credibility is integral to a fair trial. Assessments of credibility made by the triers of fact are made, amongst other things, by reference to behavioural stereotypes that are commonly thought to be associated with lying and truth-telling. These stereotypes are worthless but pervasive. In this study, potential jurors were given information such as would be given by way of judicial direction and/or expert testimony on those behavioural indicia that are useful in detecting deception. Major changes in perceptions of what does and does not work were found. This has significant implications for the conduct of criminal trials. Recommendations are presented which, it is argued, can be of real, practical, assistance in enabling decision-makers to assess the credibility of witnesses. © 2013 The Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law.

Marine cartilaginous fish retain a high concentration of urea to maintain the plasma slightly hyperosmotic to the surrounding seawater. In adult fish, urea is produced by hepatic and extrahepatic ornithine urea cycles (OUCs). However, little is known about the urea retention mechanism in developing cartilaginous fish embryos. In order to address the question as to the mechanism of urea-based osmoregulation in developing embryos, the present study examined the gene expression profiles of OUC enzymes in oviparous holocephalan elephant fish (Callorhinchus milii) embryos. We found that the yolk sac membrane (YSM) makes an important contribution to the ureosmotic strategy of the early embryonic period. The expression of OUC enzyme genes was detectable in the embryonic body from at least stage 28, and increased markedly during development to hatching, which is most probably due to growth of the liver. During the early developmental period, however, the expression of OUC enzyme genes was not prominent in the embryonic body. Meanwhile, we found that the mRNA expression of OUC enzymes was detected in the extra-embryonic YSM; the mRNA expression of cmcpsIII in the YSM was much higher than that in the embryonic body during stages 28-31. Significant levels of enzyme activity and the existence of mitochondrial-type cmgs1 transcripts in the YSM supported the mRNA findings. We also found that the cmcpsIII transcript is localized in the vascularized inner layer of the YSM. Taken together, our findings demonstrate for the first time that the YSM is involved in urea-based osmoregulation during the early to mid phase of development in oviparous cartilaginous fish.

The origins and actions of gaseous signaling molecules, nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) in the mammalian cardiovascular system have received considerable attention and it is evident that these three "gasotransmitters" perform a variety of homeostatic functions. The origins, actions and disposition of these gasotransmitters in the piscine vasculature are far from resolved. In most fish examined to date, NO or NO donors are generally in vitro and in vivo vasodilators acting via soluble guanylyl cyclase, although there is evidence for NO-mediated vasoconstriction. Injection of sodium nitroprusside into trout causes hypotension that is attributed to a reduction in systemic resistance. Unlike mammals, NO does not appear to have an endothelial origin in fish blood vessels as an endothelial NO synthase has not identified. However, neural NO synthase is prevalent in perivascular nerves and is the most likely source of NO for cardiovascular control in fish. CO is a vasodilator in lamprey and trout vessels, and it, like NO, appears to exert its action, at least in part, via guanylyl cyclase and potassium channel activation. Inhibition of CO production increases resting tone in trout vessels suggestive of tonic CO activity, but little else is known about the origin or control of CO in the fish vasculature. H(2)S is synthesized by fish vessels and its constrictory, dilatory, or even multi-phasic actions, are both species- and vessel-specific. A small component of H(2)S-mediated basal activity may be endothelial in origin, but to a large extent H(2)S affects vascular smooth muscle directly and the mechanisms are unclear. H(2)S injected into the dorsal aorta of unanesthetized trout often produces oscillations in arterial blood pressure suggestive of H(2)S activity in the central nervous system as well as peripheral vasculature. Collectively, these studies hint at significant involvement of the gasotransmitters in piscine cardiovascular function and hopefully provide a variety of avenues for future research.

Nitric oxide is one of the most important signalling molecules involved in the regulation of physiological function. It first came to prominence when it was discovered that the vascular endothelium of mammals synthesises and releases nitric oxide (NO) to mediate a potent vasodilation. Subsequently, it was shown that NO is synthesised in the endothelium by a specific isoform of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) called NOS3. Following this discovery, it was assumed that an endothelial NO/NOS3 system would be present in all vertebrate blood vessels. This review will discuss the latest genomic, anatomical and physiological evidence which demonstrates that an endothelial NO/NOS3 signalling is not ubiquitous in non-mammalian vertebrates, and that there have been key evolutionary steps that have led to the endothelial NO signalling system being a regulatory system found only in reptiles, birds and mammals. Furthermore, the emerging role of nitrite as an endocrine source of NO for vascular regulation is discussed.

This thesis investigated developmental trends in the psychological abilities presumed to underpin the doli incapax presumption in Victoria, Australia. Findings from this study questioned the utility of the doli incapax presumption as it currently stands, and highlighted the need for a purpose-built interview protocol when assessing young people's culpability.
