In this article a study of the fracture characteristics of Co66Fe4Mo2Si16B12 amorphous ribbon in the as-quenched state and after relaxation is presented. In the as-quenched state, the morphology of the crack surface shows a 'vein pattern' structure that corresponds to a large amount of plastic flow. After relaxation the surface morphology of the crack shows that when the temperature of the thermal annealing increases the plastic flow involved in the crack decreases. In the as-quenched state dynamic fracture characteristics (crack branching and stress wave induced crack) have been observed. These dynamic characteristics have not been observed in the relaxed samples but in the samples annealed at 250 °C for 20 min apart from the main crack, a crack along the width of the ribbon has been observed. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Two-dimensional MOS device simulation programs such as MINIMOS left bracket 1 right bracket are limited in their validity due to assumptions made in defining the initial two-dimensional source/drain profiles. The two options available to define source/drain regions both construct a two-dimensional profile from one-dimensional profiles normal to the surface. Inaccuracies in forming these source/drain profiles can be expected to effect predicted device characteristics as channel dimensions of the device are reduced. This paper examines these changes by interfacing numerically similated two dimensional source/drain profiles to MINIMOS and comparing predicted I//D-V//D characteristics with 2-D interfacing, 2-D profiles constructed from interfaced 1-D profiles and MINIMOS self generated profiles. Data obtained for simulations of 3 mu m N and P channel devices are presented.

We investigated the UV photoconductivity characteristics of ZnO nanowire field effect transistors (FETs) irradiated by proton beams. After proton beam irradiation (using a beam energy of 10 MeV and a fluence of 10 12 cm -2), the drain current and carrier density in the ZnO nanowire FETs decreased, and the threshold voltage shifted to the positive gate bias direction due to the creation of interface traps at the SiO 2/ZnO nanowire interface by the proton beam. The interface traps produced a higher surface barrier potential and a larger depletion region at the ZnO nanowire surface, affecting the photoconductivity and its decay time. The UV photoconductivity of the proton-irradiated ZnO nanowire FETs was higher and more prolonged than that of the pristine ZnO nanowire FETs. The results extend our understanding of the UV photoconductivity characteristics of ZnO nanowire devices and other materials when irradiated with highly energetic particles. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The potential of palm methyl esters (PME) as an alternative fuel for gas turbines is investigated using a swirl burner. The main air flow is preheated to 623 K, and a swirling spray flame is established at atmospheric pressure. The spray combustion characteristics of PME are compared to diesel and Jet-A1 fuel under the same burner power output of 6 kW. Investigation of the fuel atomizing characteristics using phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) shows that most droplets are distributed within the flame reaction zone region. PME droplets exhibit higher Sautermean diameter (SMD) values than baseline fuels, and thus higher droplet penetration length and longer evaporation timescales. The PME swirl flame presents a different visible flame reaction zone while combusting with low luminosity and produces no soot. NO x emissions per unit mass of fuel and per unit energy are reduced by using PME relative to those of conventional fuels. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

This paper reports a perspective investigation of computational modelling of blood fluid in microchannel devices as a preparation for future research on fluid-structure interaction (FSI) in biofluid mechanics. The investigation is carried out through two aspects, respectively on physical behaviours of blood flow in microchannels and appropriate methodology for modelling. The physics of blood flow is targeted to the challenges for describing blood flow in microchannels, including rheology of blood fluid, suspension features of red blood cells (RBCs), laminar hydrodynamic influence and effect of surface roughness. The analysis shows that due to the hyperelastic property of RBC and its comparable dimension with microchannels, blood fluid shows complex behaviours of two phase flow. The trajectory and migration of RBCs require accurate description of RBC deformation and interaction with plasma. Following on a discussion of modelling approaches, i.e. Eulerian method and Lagrangian method, the main stream modelling methods for multiphase flow are reviewed and their suitability to blood flow is analysed. It is concluded that the key issue for blood flow modelling is how to describe the suspended blood cells, modelled by Lagrangian method, and couple them with the based flow, modelled by Eulerian method. The multiphase flow methods are thereby classified based on the number of points required for describing a particle, as follows: (i) single-point particle methods, (ii) mutli-point particle methods, (iii) functional particle methods, and (iv) fluid particle methods. While single-point particle methods concentrate on particle dynamic movement, multipoint and functional particle methods can take into account particle mechanics and thus offer more detailed information for individual particles. Fluid particle methods provide good compromise between two phases, but require additional information for particle mechanics. For furthermore detailed description, we suggest to investigate the possibility using two domain coupling method, in which particles and base flow are modelled by two separated solvers. It is expected that this paper could clarify relevant issues in numerical modelling of blood flow in microchannels and induce some considerations for modelling blood flow using multiphase flow methods. © 2012 IEEE.
Effect of laser heating temperature on coating characteristics of Stellite 6 deposited by cold spray
Resumo:
Laser-assisted cold spray (LCS) is a new coating and fabrication process which combines some advantages of CS: solid-state deposition, retain their initial composition and high build rate with the ability to deposit materials which are either difficult or impossible to deposit using cold spray alone. Stellite 6 powder is deposited on medium carbon steels by LCS using N 2 as carrier gas pressure. The topography, cross section thickness, structure of the coatings is examined by SEM, optical microscopy, EDX. The results show that thickness and fluctuation of coating are improved with increased deposition site temperature. Porosity of coating is affected by N 2 and deposition site temperature. In this paper, it presents optimal coating using N 2 at a pressure of 3 MPa and temperature of 450°C and deposition site temperature of 1100°C.

In this paper, we report on the realisation of a free space deposition process (FSD). For the first time the use of a moving support structure to deposit tracks of metal starting from a substrate and extending into free space is characterised. The ability to write metal shapes in free space has wide ranging applications in additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping where the tracks can be layered to build overhanging features without the use of fixed support structures (such as is used in selective laser melting (SLM) and stereo lithography (SLA)). We demonstrate and perform a preliminary characterisation of the process in which a soldering iron was used to deposit lead free solder tracks. The factors affecting the stability of tracks and the effect of operating parameters, temperature, velocity, initial track starting diameter and starting volume were measured. A series of 10 tracks at each setting were compared with a control group of tracks; the track width, taper and variation between tracks were compared. Notable results in free space track deposition were that the initial track diameter and volume affected the repeatability and quality of tracks. The standard deviation of mean track width of tracks from the constrained initial diameter group were half that of the unconstrained group. The amount of material fed to the soldering iron before commencing deposition affected the taper of tracks. At an initial volume of 7 mm3 and an initial track diameter of 0.8 mm, none of the ten tracks deposited broke or showed taper > ∼1°. The maximum deposition velocity for free space track deposition using lead-free solder was limited to 1.5 mm s-1. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Non-covalent functionalization of CoMoCAT single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by bovine serum albumin (BSA) was achieved. Photoluminescence spectra for the functionalized nanotubes showed good dispersion by BSA functionalization. Raman spectra were taken for the sonicated SWNT-BSA solution to establish the signal versus concentration correlation. Cellular uptake of functionalized carbon nanotubes by mouse macrophage (RAW264.7) was then investigated using Raman spectroscopy. For a seeding density of 50% confluence in a culture solution containing 10 μg/ml of BSA-SWNTs, uptake of 200 μg/ml by the macrophages was recorded after 23hr incubation, indicating an active uptake of SWNTs. © 2012 IEEE.
