Remote sensing instruments are key players to map land surface temperature (LST) at large temporal and spatial scales. In this paper, we present how we combine passive microwave and thermal infrared data to estimate LST during summer snow-free periods over northern high latitudes. The methodology is based on the SSM/I-SSMIS 37 GHz measurements at both vertical and horizontal polarizations on a 25 km × 25 km grid size. LST is retrieved from brightness temperatures introducing an empirical linear relationship between emissivities at both polarizations as described in Royer and Poirier (2010). This relationship is calibrated at pixel scale, using cloud-free independent LST data from MODIS instruments. The SSM/I-SSMIS and MODIS data are synchronized by fitting a diurnal cycle model built on skin temperature reanalysis provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The resulting temperature dataset is provided at 25 km scale and at an hourly time step during the ten-year analysis period (2000-2011). This new product was locally evaluated at five experimental sites of the EU-PAGE21 project against air temperature measurements and meteorological model reanalysis, and compared to the MODIS LST product at both local and circumpolar scale. The results giving a mean RMSE of the order of 2.2 K demonstrate the usefulness of the microwave product, which is unaffected by clouds as opposed to thermal infrared products and offers a better resolution compared to model reanalysis.

This is to analyzes the operational behavior and technical progress among Philippine domestic banks, using micro-level data on individual banks. First, we summarize their major business activities and gain insight on how the structure is changing. Then, we formally estimate the cost function of Philippine domestic banks using panel data covering a seven-year period (1990-96). The presence of economies of scale and economies of scope is investigated and technical progress in the banking industry is measured. In addition, the results of analysis for the Philippines are compared with those of similar studies on Thailand conducted by the author previously.

Introduction : Triggered by the Asian currency crisis, Indonesia plunged into the times of violent change. With the downfall of the long-standing Soeharto rule in May 1998, changes of the state order started with great magnitude and rapidity under a new banner of “reformasi” (reform). What changes have occurred in this reformasi period? What do these changes signify? To answer these questions, it would be better to have a certain yardstick to allow us comparison. One possibility is to use a yardstick of history. What picture will emerge if we see the current array of changes in long-term historical perspectives is a main question of this paper. This paper intends to provide a bird’s-eye picture illustrating where in the Indonesian history the current restructuring of the state order is located. Rather than focusing on a specific area, I here attempt to broaden our outlook on Indonesia’s political, economic and social arenas in order to identify what are happening in these arenas, how they are mutually related, and what those events signify in the Indonesia’s historical context.

This paper investigates the relationship between access to micro-credit and temporary seasonal migration, an issue which is largely ignored in the standard rural-urban migration literature. Seasonal migration due to agricultural downturns is a common phenomenon in developing countries. Using primary data from a cross-sectional household survey from the northwest part of Bangladesh, this study quantifies the factors that influence such migration decisions. Among other results, we find that network effects play a significant role in influencing the migration decision, with the presence of kinsmen at the place of destination having considerable impact. Seasonal migration is a natural choice for individual suffering periodic hardship; however the strict weekly loan repayment rules of Micro-credit Institutes can have an adverse effect on this process, reducing the ability of borrowers to react to a shock. Our result suggests that poor individuals prefer the option of not accessing the micro-credit and opt for temporal seasonal migration during the lean period. The results have numerous potential policy implications, including the design of typical micro-credit schemes.

Pakistan's knitwear exports had been struggling since the quota phase-out until 2009. A particular feature of Pakistan's garment industry is that hiring more male sewing operators at piece rates. Recently, a few surviving knitwear factories have adopted a strategy of shifting from male piece-rate operators to salaried female operators. In Pakistan, female participation in general workforce is very limited and hiring salaried female operators requires management effort and expertise. However, even in the factories with such management skills, household factors prevent females from working outside because Pakistani culture disrespects women working in factories. Our survey reveals that financial motives compel female household members to work outside their homes and that female operators contribute substantially to their households' finances.

This article aims to quantify the efficiency of mobile operators in Spain and other European countries such as France and Germany. The period considered is from 2002 to 2008. Linear regression is used to analyze the relationship between growth in revenue and gross operating margin (EBITDA) generated by the relevant operators and the aggregate industry in each country. At the industry level, it is shown that (i) there is a strong correlation between revenue and margin; and (ii) this correlation weakens when competitive intensity grows. At the operator level, those which achieved larger increases in revenues did not sacrifice their margins, but offset the additional investments and costs required to achieve said growth through economies of scale.

A multivariate analysis on flood variables is needed to design some hydraulic structures like dams, as the complexity of the routing process in a reservoir requires a representation of the full hydrograph. In this work, a bivariate copula model was used to obtain the bivariate joint distribution of flood peak and volume, in order to know the probability of occurrence of a given inflow hydrograph. However, the risk of dam overtopping is given by the maximum water elevation reached during the routing process, which depends on the hydrograph variables, the reservoir volume and the spillway crest length. Consequently, an additional bivariate return period, the so-called routed return period, was defined in terms of risk of dam overtopping based on this maximum water elevation obtained after routing the inflow hydrographs. The theoretical return periods, which give the probability of occurrence of a hydrograph prior to accounting for the reservoir routing, were compared with the routed return period, as in both cases hydrographs with the same probability will draw a curve in the peak-volume space. The procedure was applied to the case study of the Santillana reservoir in Spain. Different reservoir volumes and spillway lengths were considered to investigate the influence of the dam and reservoir characteristics on the results. The methodology improves the estimation of the Design Flood Hydrograph and can be applied to assess the risk of dam overtopping

The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of game timeouts on basketball teams? offensive and defensive performances according to momentary differences in score and game period. The sample consisted of 144 timeouts registered during 18 basketball games randomly selected from the 2007 European Basketball Championship (Spain). For each timeout, five ball possessions were registered before (n?493) and after the timeout (n?475). The offensive and defensive efficiencies were registered across the first 35 min and last 5 min of games. A k-means cluster analysis classified the timeouts according to momentary score status as follows: losing ( ?10 to ?3 points), balanced ( ?2 to 3 points), and winning (4 to 10 points). Repeated-measures analysis of variance identified statistically significant main effects between pre and post timeout offensive and defensive values. Chi-square analysis of game period identified a higher percentage of timeouts called during the last 5 min of a game compared with the first 35 min (64.999.1% vs. 35.1910.3%; x ?5.4, PB0.05). Results showed higher post timeout offensive and defensive performances. No other effect or interaction was found for defensive performances. Offensive performances were better in the last 5 min of games, with the least differences when in balanced situations and greater differences when in winning situations. Results also showed one interaction between timeouts and momentary differences in score, with increased values when in losing and balanced situations but decreased values when in winning situations. Overall, the results suggest that coaches should examine offensive and defensive performances according to game period and differences in score when considering whether to call a timeout.

Is it profitable for an investor, from a risk-return perspective, to acquire a stake in a quoted company when a capital increase is announced? This paper analyses the return obtained from the investment in equity issues with cash contribution and pre-emptive rights, aimed at funding corporate activities: acquisitions, investments in new facilities and/or strengthening the balance sheet of the companies undertaking the equity issue. During the 16 years covered by the study, the results show a negative average excess risk-adjusted return of almost 5%, from the moment that the equity offer is announced until the completion of the preferential subscription period. To obtain this excess return, the difference between the nominal Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and the expected return, using the CAPM, is computed for each equity issue. The intention behind this method is to eliminate the effects of time and any other possible effect on the stock price during the period of the analysis. The results from this article are consistent with the Pecking Order theory for the Spanish Stock Market also six months after the preferential subscription period. However, there is a positive return after three months.

ABSTRACT When work for a doctorate degree began, the project was about public-private financing of sports clubs Madrid. At point one of the first index, concerned the origin of the sports club in Madrid ( Keep in mind that the territory was modified, which were towns before today are districts and what was once the province is now Community Autonomous of Madrid, our territorial area of study). When reading the authoritative doctrine which coincided entirely in the first sports clubs were of English origin (Huelva Recreation Club, 1889) and remember about questions and concerns raised during the undergraduate research became awkward, if not reckless. Why it had to be limited to collecting the ideas of a doctrine certainly prestigious now and then, when it was thought that this theory could not be British origin, albeit within a framework? It did not seem to make sense that there had been associations in Spain before the arrival of British companies, but especially in Madrid, always busy in terms of citizen participation, for several reasons; and indigenous games were popular sports before the football do the locals are not associated to compete with other?, Goya was wrong to paint pictures of popular games?, Why then was no Associations Act, 1887, clearly previous Huelva Recreation Club (1889)? The laws are developed in response to a social need or a past practice, or both. No one thought of being a source of law practice with the law and the general principles? No, being so close? No one appearing in Article 1 of the Civil? Thus the rationale and objectives of the research turned back, it was necessary to try logic or anything. Only documentary evidence was needed that provide light and were tangible to the legal arguments. Thus, among the rules of the legal rule, jurisprudence and doctrine, the theoretical framework of this work develops, we need to know how legislation affects sports clubs at present to understand the similarities with clubs works pioneers, we must understand that a law is never isolated from others, they are all related, intersections are inevitably unlimited and the immense results. It has made an analysis of a complex reality that transcends the legal and sports. Regarding the material and method, no references to studies were compared, from the legal point of view, of the Statute of the first Madrid sports clubs, or name them until early 2013 digitized at the National Library of the Institute of Regulation Gymnastics, Riding and Fencing (Villalobos, 1842); the documentary evidence that was sought to support the theory was already tangible. Then they find others to add to the sample and further supporting documentation. There was also no work on the documentation issued by the Public Administration, which have been studied administrative records and their comparison with the contemporary legislation and the current, allowing more concrete form and type of the first sports legal forms. Search for documentation we have turned to libraries, archives and even deposits that were not rated bundles, had suffered flooding and decay in the basement of Madrid and even fire some looked askance. The found documents have enabled us to live with the characters that inhabited the early clubs in the first addresses; real stories with its own soundtrack. And the birth of the Madrid sports associations could not have been gestated at a better time ; during the Romantic period , or in a better place ; at the crossroads of the nearby narrow streets of the great arteries of the Capital; a walk along the Libertad, Barbieri, Minas, Hortaleza and Montera. The research results confirm the theory that the first Madrid sports club had nothing to do with the clubs that later came in the luggage of British companies, nor in time; They predate, or rather; Madrid, or in the form; the comparison with a British club denotes the time differences or rather shortcomings, but more than anything in the background; the Madrid club had a nature that reflect the sentiments of the first members and the spirit of the Capital; charity, show, citizen participation and teamwork. It is also shown in the results and discussion the particularities of the first locals clubs in their relationship with the press, teaching, media, sports facilities always shared with the culture and terminology and the kits, but all the special relationship with the inherent right of assembly; hard to think at first that the test of habit were in the theater posters, and a program of a sports competition hide Statutes for centuries.

ABSTRACT The research that we present has as the main objective to collect, record, analyzed and reflection on a time, that was little studied from the architectural field. It is the period between the two laws of most relevance to the protection of Spanish Historical Heritage of the last century. We refer to the Law on the Protection and Conservation of National Heritage of 1933 and Law 16/1985 of Spanish Historical Heritage. Through this research, it aims to provide a comprehensive view of the stage from the architectural approach, basing it on the development of methodological guidelines. The investigation was initiated by the bibliography and documentary for further analysis. After this initial phase, we have identified the common links between existing studies on the Spanish architectural heritage prior to the Civil War and dedicated research into the history of the late twentieth century. Thus, we have tried to draw a documental bridge, with which virtually transpose the gap that has existed. Historically, professionals from diverse disciplines have been worried and busy of the protection of the built and urban heritage. They have undertaken the daunting task of understanding and explaining the historical and legal difficulties, which have marked its evolution. This concern has generated an enormous and diverse literature, from formal and precise protection, in the framework of conservation historiographical trends and nineteenth-century theories. Also, they have studied the impact of urban planning in the protection of heritage, including the competences and administrative juxtapositions. They have generated a lot of documents of all kinds and scientific depth. The title of this document, in itself, circumscribes the matter that has been analyzed during this research process, the Monumental Architectural Heritage. The basal studio is located in the historical buildings, which, in turn, hold the declaration of cultural interest, and thus belong to the Spanish Historical Heritage. The work methodology was developed concentrically from general aspects of the protection of monuments, such as the legal framework that predates the enactment of the 1933 Act, and the previous state of the monuments that should be preserved. We recognize in the legislative sphere, the organic base that regulates and directs the tutelage of Spanish heritage and conservative action. The situation scheme emerged from the previous analysis, and we detected the key factors in the transition to the Spanish Historical Heritage Act; the conceptual evolution of the Heritage as a generic assessment, and witness this progress through historical, artistic and cultural values. This research paper consists of a first phase, corresponding to Chapter 1, which has developed from the legal regulation governing the Spanish Historical Heritage, through laws, decrees, orders and related provisions, supplemented the bibliography dedicated to the historical review of the legal process of protecting historical and artistic heritage. While it was not our intention to conduct a detailed study of the legal and historical volume preceding the 1933 Act, and that started the study period of this investigation, yes he has been focusing on the production of an extract from those elements of the doctrine with greater relevance and impact on the protection of Spanish art-historical and / or architectural heritage. Throughout our study we have seen what some jurists had already raised, about the scattering, branching and diversification of efforts, both in specific law and in urban law. This disaggregation has been extended to the field of recognition measures characterized by the development of multiple catalogs and inventories, with varying significance, scope and usefulness. The result has been a division of efforts, blurring the objective and turning the action of the recognition in multiple attempts little consequence. Our research advances in the analysis of heritage protection, as globalization concept in the Chapter 2, which includes a number of direct and indirect mechanisms that individually, often lack the effective force that many of monuments have required to survive the test of time and circumstances. First, in this second chapter we focused specifically on the mechanism regulated by the Spanish Historical Heritage Act, and the general protection regime implemented since its enactment in 1985 . In particular, we consider the declaration of cultural interest as maximum protection and protection of cultural assets, and their subsequent entry in the relevant General Register under the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports . This mechanism is the instrument par excellence that condenses the powers of state care about a cultural asset, and which represents the cohesion of the historical, artistic, social values , etc. Secondly, we analyzed the Urban Planning, as a unifying cultural value in the city and as a container for the effects caused by man from its interaction with the environment in which he lives and relates. Thirdly, we have collected and studied the origin of catalogs, as generic notion of protection. For centuries, this genre has been defined as a tool to intervene in the protection of historical heritage, although difficult to quantify, through the identification, enumeration and description of a particular typology of monuments, and that contributing to the recognition of qualitative values contained therein. The third chapter analyzes the direct mechanism of protection performed by the Administration in the monuments with the statement of Cultural asset and inclusion in the General Protection Register. The theoretical and legal protection of a monument is as necessary as puerile if they are not followed by intervention. For this type of architectural heritage, any action which has the aim to safeguard the values implicit in the cultural asset involves protection compliance. Finally, the fourth chapter becomes the highlight, because it treated of the end process of the cultural heritage protection, the consummation of the intervention. The theory, the criticism, the rules and even the radical doctrines on the protection of cultural heritage, are meaningless if they do not take place the facts, the action, in antithesis to the omission. The history of the architectural heritage has given eloquent proof by itself. A lot of vestiges have been lost, in many times, for the destruction, through indolence or unknowledge. For this reason, and to be consistent with our thesis, we have collected and analyzed the projects documentation of three monuments (the Burgos Cathedral, the Aljafería Palace-Castle in Zaragoza and the Wall of Lugo). Sometimes, some researchers have suspected that there had not been planning. They suspect that the projects have been the result of different emergency situations. In opposition of this, we confirm that, except for emergency interventions result of specific circumstances, there have been a process of analysis to conclude in the priorities designation, which has guided the restoration process over two centuries. The complexity, magnitude and constructive uniqueness have defined the evolution of intervention. In conclusion, the effectiveness of the protection of Spanish cultural heritage lies in the conjunction of many aspects, including: the successful implementation of existing, specific and ancillary standards; the knowledge of good and its historical, artistic and cultural values; the cataloging and inclusion in the relevant inventories; and the commitment of the actors and institutions on which it depends. These planning tasks are necessary to ensure both structural safeguards as conservation values; and the introduction of a monitoring plan to detect possible dangers that threaten its conservation. But, the optimal situation would be given by a system in which these urban-regulations and specific mechanisms, would work together like a machine, where each piece operated with relative independence, but in tune with the other gears. So far, the reality is far from this situation, turning this coexistence in a utopia. Both legislators and officials and technicians involved must be aware that the effectiveness and scope of protection depends on your insight and commitment.

We studied the influence of pre-incubation weight of eggs (EW) laid by 24 wk-old brown laying breeders on egg production from 18 (start of egg production) to 22 wk of age (average egg production across EW treatments of 87.8%). The experiment consisted in 7 treatments based on the initial EW (47 to 53 g with 1 g difference between groups) Average BW of the extreme groups varied at hatching from 32.5 to 35.4 g, respectively. Feed intake, egg production, and egg weight were recorded weekly by replicate as well as for the entire experiment (18 to 22 wk of age). Hens were weighed by replicate at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. From these data, ADFI, egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion ratio per kilogram of eggs and per dozen of eggs, and BW gain were calculated by week and for the entire experiment. Also, the number of dirty, broken, and shell-less eggs was recorded daily by replicate in all eggs produced. Data were analyzed as a completely randomized design with 7 treatments differing in the initial pre-hatching EW. Effects of EW on the variables studied were partitioned into linear and quadratic components. EW did not affect the age at which pullets reached 50% egg production, cumulative egg production, or BW gain of the hens from 18 to 22 wk of age. Egg weight and the proportion of dirty, broken, and shell-less eggs were not affected by the BW of the pullets at hatching. In summary, small eggs (>47 g) laid by young, healthy laying breeders, can be used successfully to produce high quality pullets

Pregnancy leads to several changes in body composition and morphology of women. It is not clear whether the biomechanical changes occurring in this period are due exclusively to body composition and size or to other physiological factors. The purpose was to quantify the morphology and body composition of women throughout pregnancy and in the postpartum period and identify the contribution of these parameters on the lower limb joints kinetic during gait. Eleven women were assessed longitudinally, regarding anthropometric, body composition, and kinetic parameters of gait. Body composition and body dimensions showed a significant increase during pregnancy and a decrease in the postpartum period. In the postpartum period, body composition was similar to the 1st trimester, except for triceps skinfold, total calf area, and body mass index, with higher results than at the beginning of pregnancy. Regression models were developed to predict women’s internal loading through anthropometric variables. Four models include variables associated with the amount of fat; four models include variables related to overall body weight; three models include fat-free mass; one model includes the shape of the trunk as a predictor variable. Changes in maternal body composition and morphology largely determine kinetic dynamics of the joints in pregnant women.
