Mrs. Marguerite Dawson King (1901-1979) was a very active and civic minded woman and the collection of her papers attests to the valuable contributions which can be made by women and by senior citizens. The King Papers are a valuable source of information on women in politics and on the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, bylaws, reports, agendas, yearbooks, handbooks, newsletters, brochures, speeches, legislative bills, program notes, newspaper clippings, awards, and certificates concerning Mrs. King’s activities as chapter chairman and assistant state director of the AARP; as district chairman of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; as the first woman County Chairman of the democratic party in S.C. and as a member of the Democratic Women’s Council of S.C., the York County Democratic Women’s Club, Partners of the Americas, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Also included in the collection is information on the development of the city of Rock Hill, S.C.

The Jean C. Agee Papers consists of electrostatic copies of genealogical information, correspondence, legal records, publications, and other papers relating to the following families: Bratton, Clawson, Erwin, Kee (Key), Stroud, Crook, Gillespie, Watson, Hunter, McKinney, Moffatt and Williams. Descendants of these families have settled in Chester County and other regions of the S.C. piedmont district. The collection also includes church histories and/or cemetery records for Fishing Creek church, Hopewell Baptist Church, Bethesda Presbyterian Church, and Purity Church; and an autobiography of Reverend A. M. Cartledge who served as minister of many churches in central and western S.C. The Marshall Family Papers includes originals and photocopies of two letters written by Fred D. Marshall of Rock Hill. The first is from Camp Thomas in Chickamauga, Georgia and the second was from Camp Cuba Libre in Jacksonville, FL. while he was a soldier during the Spanish American War to his parents, Capt and Mrs. John Wilson Marshall of Rock Hill Also included is a letter by W.W. Byre to Capt. John Wilson Marshall while a missionary in Mexico. Fred D. Marshall served as mayor of Columbia from 1941 to 1946 and W.W. Byre became Dean of Erskine Theological Seminary at Due West, SC.

The Hutchison Family Papers consist of diaries, journals, speeches, correspondence, genealogical material and financial papers, concerning the personal and business affairs of a Rock Hill family. Subjects include post-colonial life in the Carolinas, the antebellum plantation system in South Carolina, post-Civil War cotton farming, especially the Rock Hill Cotton Mill, and Rock Hill during World War I. There is also material concerning relations and negotiations with the Catawba Indians by David Hutchison who was one of several commissioners designated by the South Carolina legislature to investigate Catawba land claims and leasing practices; and historical sketches of Glencairn Garden, the White House and the Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, all located in Rock Hill, South Carolina. There are also included in the “General Correspondence and Related Papers” series such records as: last will and testament, inventory lists, certificates of indentured servants, legislative acts, (eg. 1840 Treaty with the Catawba Indians) and other similar documents. Correspondents include Jude Grimke, A.E. Hutchison, David Hutchison, Hiram Hutchison, James Moore, John N. Morehead and Thomas Spratt.

The Ellen Evans Cathcart Papers consist of biographical sketches of Mrs. Ellen Evans Cathcart (1869-1952), first woman member of the Democratic National Committee who was also instrumental in the founding of the Children’s Bureau. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings, magazine articles, correspondence, reports, certificates, citations, and photographs relating to her work as supervisor of the Children’s Bureau of South Carolina and her involvement in the women’s suffrage movement. Of particular note is an annual report of the South Carolina Council of Defense which outlines the achievements of women of South Carolina in war work and a program book of the 47th annual convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association.

The George C. Martin Papers includes Civil War correspondence between George Canning Martin and his wife, Sarah Jane, from May 1862 to August 1864. Subjects include camp life, the progress of the war in North Carolina and Virginia, and the physical and mental condition of the Confederate soldiers (such as ill health, poor food, and depression). Also included are tax receipts, pension records, newspapers clippings (1863), a commonplace book belonging to Robert Smith, and a memoir (author unknown).

The Surasky Family Papers consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, reminiscences, poetry, and other papers mostly photocopies. Of particular interest are a reminiscence by Esther Pinck entitled “Remembrance of Things Past”, concerned with the Jewish experience in Aiken, SC; papers related to Mina Tropp, a painter who developed a unique medium of painting with flora and who is also published poet; and letters of Judge Justine Wise Polier, well known Juvenile Court judge in New York. Collection is almost all photocopies.

The Mary Elizabeth Massey Papers consist of Dr. Massey’s professional and organizational files and includes biographical data, correspondence, lecture and teaching materials, rough notes and unpublished drafts of Dr. Massey’s journal articles and books, speeches, research notes and photo and typescript copies of historical manuscripts from other repositories. Most of the material pertains to Dr. Massey’s publishing efforts, her work as a Winthrop faculty member and scholar and her involvement with professional organizations, especially the Southern Historical Association and the Civil War Centennial Commission. While there is material extending from Dr. Massey’s student days at Hendrix College (a 1937 graduate), most of the substantive material extends from 1953-1973.
