Low birth weight has been associated with increased obesity in adulthood. It has been shown that dietary salt restriction during intrauterine life induces low birth weight and insulin resistance in adult Wistar rats. The present study had a two-fold objective: to evaluate the effects that low salt intake during pregnancy and lactation has on the amount and distribution of adipose tissue; and to determine whether the phenotypic changes in fat mass in this model are associated with alterations in the activity of the renin-angiotensin system. Maternal salt restriction was found to reduce birth weight in male and female offspring. In adulthood, the female offspring of dams fed the low-salt diet presented higher adiposity indices than those seen in the offspring of dams fed a normal-salt diet. This was attributed to the fact that adipose tissue mass (retroperitoneal but not gonadal, mesenteric or inguinal) was greater in those rats than in the offspring of dams fed a normal diet. The adult offspring of dams fed the low-salt diet, compared to those dams fed a normal-salt diet, presented the following: plasma leptin levels higher in males and lower in females; plasma renin activity higher in males but not in females; and no differences in body weight, mean arterial blood pressure or serum angiotensin-converting enzyme activity. Background: The relationship between CETP and postprandial hyperlipemia is still unclear. We verified the effects of varying activities of plasma CETP on postprandial lipemia and precocious atherosclerosis in asymptomatic adult women. Methods: Twenty-eight women, selected from a healthy population sample (n = 148) were classified according to three CETP levels, all statistically different: CETP deficiency (CETPd <= 4.5%, n = 8), high activity (CETPi >= 23.8, n = 6) and controls (CTL, CETP >= 4.6% and <= 23.7%, n = 14). After a 12 h fast they underwent an oral fat tolerance test (40 g of fat/m(2) of body surface area) for 8 hours. TG, TG-rich-lipoproteins (TRL), cholesterol and TRL-TG measurements (AUC, AUIC, AR, RR and late peaks) and comparisons were performed on all time points. Lipases and phospholipids transfer protein (PLTP) were determined. Correlation between carotid atherosclerosis (c-IMT) and postprandial parameters was determined. CETP TaqIB and I405V and ApoE-epsilon 3/epsilon 2/epsilon 4 polymorphisms were examined. To elucidate the regulation of increased lipemia in CETPd a multiple linear regression analysis was performed. Results: In the CETPi and CTL groups, CETP activity was respectively 9 and 5.3 higher compared to the CETPd group. Concentrations of all HDL fractions and ApoA-I were higher in the CETPd group and clearance was delayed, as demonstrated by modified lipemia parameters (AUC, AUIC, RR, AR and late peaks and meal response patterns). LPL or HL deficiencies were not observed. No genetic determinants of CETP deficiency or of postprandial lipemia were found. Correlations with c-IMT in the CETPd group indicated postprandial pro-atherogenic associations. In CETPd the regression multivariate analysis (model A) showed that CETP was largely and negatively predicted by VLDL-C lipemia (R(2) = 92%) and much less by TG, LDL-C, ApoAI, phospholipids and non-HDL-C. CETP (model B) influenced mainly the increment in ApoB-100 containing lipoproteins (R(2) = 85% negatively) and phospholipids (R(2) = 13%), at the 6(th)h point. Conclusion: The moderate CETP deficiency phenotype included a paradoxically high HDL-C and its sub fractions (as earlier described), positive associations with c-IMT, a postprandial VLDL-C increment predicting negatively CETP activity and CETP activity regulating inversely the increment in ApoB100-containing lipoproteins. We hypothesize that the enrichment of TG content in triglyceride-rich ApoB-containing lipoproteins and in TG rich remnants increases lipoproteins` competition to active lipolysis sites, reducing their catabolism and resulting on postprandial lipemia with atherogenic consequences.

The purpose of this presentation is to offer a deeper understanding of adult learning and provide tips on how to effectively teach in the online environment. The presenter will compare and contrast two learning theories: andragogy and pedagogy. Furthermore, the roles of the online instructor and e-learner will be outlined. An open discussion at the end of the presentation will allow participants to make implications as to which learning theory is more effective for online learning.

Syftet med studien var att beskriva subjektiva multifaktoriella metoder som sjuksköterskor kan använda för att identifiera äldre patienter med malnutrition och patienter med risk för att utveckla malnutriion. Syftet var vidare att redogöra för vilka undersökningar som sjuksköterskor i kliniskt arbete använder för att bedöma patienters nutrionsstatus med samt att belysa sjuksköterskors attityder till prevention av malnutritionstillstånd. Studien genomfördes som en systematisk litteraturstudie. De vetenskapliga artiklar (n=17) som ingick i studiens resultat söktes i databaserna ELIN@Dalarna och CINAHL. De sökord som användes var malnutrition, nutrition, undernutrition, elderly, screening, assessment, MNA, SGA, nurses och attitudes i olika kombinationer. Genom analys och granskning av de vetenskapliga artiklarna framkom det i resultatet att SGA, MNA, Simplified Model Malnourishment och NUFFE var subjektiva multifaktoriella metoder som sjuksköterskor kan använda för identifiering av äldre patienter med malnutrition eller risk för malnutrition. Den vanligaste undersökningen som sjuksköterskor bedömde patienters nutritionsstatus med var vägning. Andra undersökningar var mätning, BMI, intervju om normal vikt och viktförlust, observation av patienten, kostregistrering samt nutritionsplan i journalen. Sjuksköterskor upplevde att sjukhusledningen inte förväntade sig att bedömning av patienters nutritionsstatus skulle ske vid inskrivning samt att ansvarsfördelningen mellan sjuksköterskor och läkare var oklar. Det förekom att sjuksköterskor var ointresserade av behandling av malnutrition, men majoriteten var mycket intresserade. Många sjuksköterskor kände att deras kunskaper inom nutrition var otillräckliga för arbetet.

Syftet men denna systematiska litteraturstudie har varit att beskriva vilka komplikationer, som kunde leda till malnutrition hos cancerpatienter när de genomgått cytostatikabehandling. Studien syftar även till att beskriva vilka omvårdnadsåtgärder sjuksköterskan kunde vidta för att förebygga och lindra dessa komplikationer hos patienter med cancer. Artikelsökningen har skett via databaserna Elin@Dalarna, Blackwell Synergy och ScienceDirect (Elsevier). Sökorden som användes var cancer, constipation, fatigue, malnutrition, nutrition, nursing, pain, support, treatment, chemotherapy, side-effects, prevention, oral, complication, nausea, nutritional support, weight loss, BMR, oncology och care. Resultatet visade att komplikationerna som cancerpatienterna kunde drabbas av var fatigue, diareér, kräkningar, såriga slemhinnor och illamående. Dessa komplikationer kunde leda till malnutrition. Många patienter med cancer kunde dö av malnutrition istället för själva sjukdomen. Malnutrierade patienter med cancer kunde även få fler komplikationer av cytostatikabehandlingen än de patienter med cancer som var normalviktiga. Att följa upp nutritionsstatusen tidigt visade sig vara mycket viktigt för att förebygga och lindra komplikationerna och hjälpa patienter med cancer att motarbeta malnutritionen. Samarbetet med andra vårdgivare visade sig vara nödvändigt för att patienten med cancer skulle få en så bra omvårdnad som möjligt.

Syftet med denna systematiska litteraturstudie som inkluderar 18 artiklar, har varit att belysa vilka nutritionsstöd som kan förebygga och behandla malnutrition hos barn med cancer samt vilka omvårdnadsbehov som finns i samband med nutritionsbehandling. Resultatet visade att barn med cancer som behandlas med strålning och/eller cytostatika ofta drabbas av olika biverkningar som påverkar nutritionen. Cirka 46 % av barnen utvecklade malnutrition. Näringsintaget försämrades ofta på grund av biverkningarna vilket fick till följd att behandlingen försämrades samt tillväxt och utveckling påverkades negativt. Olika sätt fanns för att upprätthålla gott nutritionsstatus. Oralt intag förordades för att upprätthålla mag- tarmkanalens struktur och funktion. Alternativ för kostbehandling när barnet inte klarade att inta oral kost var nasogastrisk sond (NS), Perkutan Endoskopisk Gastrostomi (PEG) och Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). NS visade sig vara relativt biverkningsfritt och ett alternativ att tillgå under kortare nutritionsbehandlingar. PEG var ett gott alternativ med relativt få biverkningar då barnet behöver nutritionsstöd under längre tid. TPN var ett alternativ enbart då barnet inte kunde äta relaterat till bristande upptag i mag- tarmkanalen. Försämrat näringsintag påverkade barnets livskvalitet. Familjen påverkades genom att ätandet var en stark källa till konflikt mellan barnet och föräldrarna. Det var viktigt att barnet och familjen fick stöd i barnets förmåga att kunna äta samt att erbjudas näringsrik kost. Bedömning av nutritionsstatus och dokumentation av oralt intag, parenteralt intag och effekter av nutritionsbehandlingen var av stor vikt för att kunna ge barnet optimal omvårdnad.

This study aims to test Robertson’s lexical transfer principle, which posits that Chinese learners use demonstratives (particularly this) and the numeral one as markers of definiteness and indefiniteness. This is tested by analysing Chinese learners’ written production collected from the Spoken and Written English Corpus of Chinese Learners 2.0 (SWECCL 2.0). The purpose is to understand the variation of article usage by adult Chinese learners of English. More specifically, the study examines to what extent articles, possessive and demonstrative pronouns are used in Chinese learners’ English and how definite and indefinite articles are used by the Chinese learners. Findings suggest that Robertson’s lexical transfer principle was corroborated by the present study. In addition, Chinese learners prefer to use demonstrative determiners, the possessive determiner our, and the numeral one to perform the function of marking definiteness and indefiniteness. In particular, the learners try to use the demonstrative determiners that and this in the anaphoric function instead of the definite article, and the demonstrative determiner those is frequently used in the cataphoric function. What is more, the learners use the numeral one as a marker of indefiniteness, and it is also used as a marker of definiteness in the anaphoric function. Further, the possessive determiner our is used as a marker of definiteness in larger situation uses referring to something unique. To this end, the study is able to show that the definite article is used to perform the function of marking indefiniteness, and in some particular contexts the definite article functions as a Chinese specifier in Chinese learners’ English. Also, the indefinite article is frequently used in quantifier phrases but is rarely used in other functions. There are three main reasons that may explain why Chinese learners use determiners variously. Firstly, the choice of determiners by Chinese learners is influenced by linguistic contexts. Secondly, because of learning strategies, Chinese learners try to ignore the anaphoric function and cataphoric function that they are not yet ready to process in article usage. Thirdly, interlanguage grammar influences the optionality in the use of articles.

Using genome-wide data from 253,288 individuals, we identified 697 variants at genome-wide significance that together explained one-fifth of the heritability for adult height. By testing different numbers of variants in independent studies, we show that the most strongly associated ∼2,000, ∼3,700 and ∼9,500 SNPs explained ∼21%, ∼24% and ∼29% of phenotypic variance. Furthermore, all common variants together captured 60% of heritability. The 697 variants clustered in 423 loci were enriched for genes, pathways and tissue types known to be involved in growth and together implicated genes and pathways not highlighted in earlier efforts, such as signaling by fibroblast growth factors, WNT/β-catenin and chondroitin sulfate-related genes. We identified several genes and pathways not previously connected with human skeletal growth, including mTOR, osteoglycin and binding of hyaluronic acid. Our results indicate a genetic architecture for human height that is characterized by a very large but finite number (thousands) of causal variants.2014
