Taxation of couples: a mirrleesian approach for non-unitary households

Optimal tax theory in the Mirrlees’ (1971) tradition implicitly relies on the assumption that all agents are single or that couples may be treated as individuals, despite accumulating evidence against this view of household behavior. We consider an economy where agents may either be single or married, in which case choices result from Nash bargaining between spouses. In such an environment, tax schedules must play the double role of: i) defining households’ objective functions through their impact on threat points, and; ii) inducing the desired allocations as optimal choices for households given these objectives. We find that the taxation principle, which asserts that there is no loss in relying on tax schedules is not valid here: there are constrained efficient allocations which cannot be implemented via taxes. More sophisticated mechanisms expand the set of implementable allocations by: i) aligning the households’ and planner’s objectives; ii) manipulating taxable income elasticities, and; iii) freeing the design of singles’ tax schedules from its consequences on households’ objectives.

Análise dos relatórios de sustentabilidade das indústrias de papel e celulose

O Relatório de Sustentabilidade é a demonstração utilizada pelas empresas para divulgar e evidenciar suas práticas sustentáveis. A presente pesquisa buscou compreender de que forma as cinco maiores empresas do segmento de papel e celulose divulgam aos interessados tais práticas e indicadores de desempenho econômico, social e ambiental. Realizou-se análise documental, para verificar a evolução da divulgação dos índices no período de 2008 a 2011, pode-se observar que houve uma evolução expressiva na divulgação dos Indicadores GRI, essencialmente porque estes são reconhecidos mundialmente, o que proporciona as empresas maior transparência e confiabilidade em vários mercados, inclusive externos, e por outro lado observou-se uma redução na divulgação no Balanço Social – Modelo IBASE.

Influence of phytase and xylanase supplementation on growth performance and nutrient utilisation of broilers offered wheat-based diets

Individual and combined supplementation of phosphorus-adequate, wheat-based broiler diets with exogenous phytase and xylanase was evaluated in three experiments. The effects of the enzyme combination in lysine-deficient diets containing wheat and sorghum were more pronounced than those of the individual feed enzymes. The inclusion of phytase plus xylanase improved (p<0.05) weight gains (7.3%) and feed efficiency (7.0%) of broilers (7-28 days post-hatch) and apparent metabolisable energy (AME) by 0.76 MJ/kg DM. Phytase plus xylanase increased (p<0.05) the overall, apparent ileal digestibility of amino acids by 4.5% (0.781 to 0.816); this was greater than the responses to either phytase (3.6%; 0.781 to 0.809) or xylanase (0.7%; 0.781 to 0.784). Absolute increases in amino acid digestibility with the combination exceeded the sum of the individual increases generated by phytase and xylanase for alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, threonine, tyrosine and valine. These synergistic responses may have resulted from phytase and xylanase having complementary modes of action for enhancing amino acid digestibilities and/or facilitating substrate access. The two remaining experiments were almost identical except wheat used in Experiment 2 had a higher phytate concentration and a lower estimated AME content than wheat used in Experiment 3. Individually, phytase and xylanase were generally more effective in Experiment 2, which probably reflects the higher dietary substrate levels present. Phytase plus xylanase increased (p<0.05) gains (15.4%) and feed efficiency (7.0%) of broiler chicks from 4-24 days post-hatch in Experiment 2; whereas, in Experiment 3, the combination increased (p<0.05) growth to a lesser extent (5.6%) and had no effect on feed efficiency. This difference in performance responses appeared to be 'protein driven' as the combination increased (p<0.05) nitrogen retention in Experiment 2 but not in Experiment 3; whereas phytase plus xylanase significantly increased AME in both experiments. In Experiments 2 and 3 the combined inclusion levels of phytase and xylanase were lower that the individual additions, which demonstrates the benefits of simultaneously including phytase and xylanase in wheat-based poultry diets.

On the dual structure of the auditory brainstem response in dogs

Objective: To use the over-complete discrete wavelet transform (OCDWT) to further examine the dual structure of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in the dog. Methods: ABR waveforms recorded from 20 adult dogs at supra-threshold (90 and 70 dBnHL) and threshold (0-15 dBSL) levels were decomposed using a six level OCDWT and reconstructed at individual scales (frequency ranges) A6 (0-391 Hz), D6 (391-781 Hz), and D5 (781-1563 Hz). Results: At supra-threshold stimulus levels, the A6 scale (0-391 Hz) showed a large amplitude waveform with its prominent wave corresponding in latency with ABR waves II/III; the D6 scale (391-781 Hz) showed a small amplitude waveform with its first four waves corresponding in latency to ABR waves I, II/III, V, and VI; and the D5 scale (781-1563 Hz) showed a large amplitude, multiple peaked waveform with its first six waves corresponding in latency to ABR waves I, II, III, IV, V, and VI. At threshold stimulus levels (0-15 dBSL), the A6 scale (0-391 Hz) continued to show a relatively large amplitude waveform, but both the D6 and D5 scales (391781 and 781-1563 Hz, respectively) now showed relatively small amplitude waveforms. Conclusions: A dual structure exists within the ABR of the dog, but its relative structure changes with stimulus level. Significance: The ABR in the dog differs from that in the human both in the relative contributions made by its different frequency components, and the way these components change with stimulus level. Through the lenses of organizational culture: A comparison of state-owned enterprises and joint ventures in China

This study compared state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and joint ventures (JVs) in light of organizational culture practices. Data were obtained via a survey participated by 781 respondents from five enterprises. Factoring identified four cultural dimensions: Participation, Teamwork, Supervision, and Meetings. All four dimensions, except Participation, were rated significantly higher by respondents from SOEs as compared to the ratings in JVs. Based on the findings, this study concluded that culture practices valued in one type of enterprise might be liability in another. The implication for management is to gear culture practices to the characteristics of the organization to make it successful.

Esta tese baseia-se na análise das campanhas políticas presidenciais, especificamente nos programas de Horário Gratuito de Propaganda Eleitoral veiculados na televisão brasileira de 1989 a 2002. Discorremos sobre os melhores momentos das campanhas políticas desse período, contudo, o enfoque mais abrangente é nas eleições de 2002. A presente pesquisa retrata pontos importantes relacionados à projeção da imagem dos candidatos à Presidência da República do Brasil. A comunicação, a trajetória, a televisão como veículo de comunicação de massa, a propaganda política, a publicidade eleitoral, o marketing político, o marketing eleitoral, em suma, as ferramentas utilizadas como aliadas imprescindíveis na conquista do poder.(AU)

SINTOMAS MENTAIS E SUPORTE SOCIAL EM PROFISSIONAIS DE ENFERMAGEM

Esta pesquisa investiga a possível correlação entre os níveis de depressão e ansiedade e a percepção de suporte social em profissionais de enfermagem em ambiente hospitalar. Utiliza-se de método descritivo exploratório de caráter quantitativo comparativo. Foram aplicados: A Escala Beck de Depressão BDI total e as subescalas S1 cognitivo-afetiva, S2 somática e de desempenho; o Inventário de Ansiedade BAI (Beck Anxiety Inventory) ; a Escala de Percepção de Suporte Social (EPSS) e questionário sócio-demográfico-clínico em 39 profissionais de enfermagem, auxiliares e técnicos de hospital particular de médio porte. Os dados da BAI revelaram uma freqüência média de 6,10 (DP=5,826) ; a BDI total, média de 7,36 (DP=5,163), com média de 4,31 (DP= 3,764) na subescala cognitivo-afetiva e média de 3,03 (DP= 2,323) na subescala somática e de desempenho. Os dados evidenciam sintomas de ansiedade em 15% dos participantes e depressão em 18%, na faixa de intensidade leve, sem comprometimento funcional significativo. O escore médio fatorial da percepção de suporte social emocional, verificado é de 2,61(DP=0,781), obtendo no suporte prático frequência média de 2,28 (DP=0,686). . Foi verificada uma relação significante positiva (P=0,004) entre os escores das escalas BAI e BDI BDIS1 e BDIS2. Por outro lado, a correlação entre a Percepção de Suporte Social Emocional e o nível de ansiedade verificado pela Escala BAI apresenta uma relação negativa e inversa com BAI e significante (P=0,022), ou seja, enquanto a percepção de suporte emocional aumenta, o escore da escala de ansiedade diminui. Também uma foi verificada uma correlação negativa inversa significante entre a Percepção de Suporte Social Emocional e o nível de depressão verificado pela escala BDI total (P=0,012), e com BDI S1 (P=0,019). A correlação entre a percepção de Suporte Social Prático e o nível de depressão verificado pela Escala BDI Total (P=0,016) e BDI S1(P=0,014) apresenta um relação negativa e inversa, significante , ou seja, enquanto a percepção de suporte social prático aumenta, o escore da escala de depressão diminui. Esses dados apontam para que a percepção de suporte social tenha efeitos mediadores na proteção de saúde, agindo como moderador do impacto negativo de possíveis condições adversas de trabalho do profissional de enfermagem.

Perceived quality of health care in macular disease:A survey of members of the Macular Disease Society

Aim: To investigate the experiences of people with macular disease within the British healthcare system. Method: The Macular Disease Society Questionnaire, a self completion questionnaire designed to survey the experiences of people with macular disease, was sent to 2000 randomly selected members of the Macular Disease Society. The questionnaire incorporated items about people's experiences with health professionals and the information and support provided by them at the time of diagnosis and thereafter. Results: Over 50% thought their consultant eye specialist was not interested in them as a person and 40% were dissatisfied with their diagnostic consultation. 185 people thought their general practitioner (GP) was well informed about macular disease but twice as many people thought their GP was not well informed. About an equal number of people thought their GP was supportive as those who thought their GP was not supportive. A total of 1247 people were told "nothing can be done to help with your macular disease." A number of negative emotional reactions were experienced by those people as a result, with 61% of them reporting feeling anxious or depressed. Of 282 people experiencing visual hallucinations after diagnosis with macular disease, only 20.9% were offered explanations for them. Concluslons: Many people with macular disease have unsatisfactory experiences of the healthcare system. Many of the reasons for dissatisfaction could be resolved by healthcare professionals if they were better informed about macular disease and had a better understanding of and empathy with patients' experiences.
