OBJECTIVE: To analyze, in people with intermittent claudication, the frequency of individuals who are in each of stages of health behavior change to practice physical activity, and analyze the association of these stages with the walking capacity. METHODS: We recruited 150 patients with intermittent claudication treated at a tertiary center, being included those >30-year-old-individuals and who had ankle-arm index <0.90. We obtained socio-demographic information, presence of comorbidities and cardiovascular risk factors and stages of health behavior change to practice physical activity through a questionnaire, they being pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. Moreover, the walking capacity was measured in a treadmill test (Gardner protocol). RESULTS: Most individuals were in the maintenance stage (42.7%), however, when the stages of health behavior change were categorized into active (action and maintenance) and inactive (pre-contemplation, contemplation and preparation),51.3% of the individuals were classified as inactive behavior. There was no association between stages of health behavior change, sociodemographic factors and cardiovascular risk factors. However, patients with intermittent claudication who had lower total walking distance were three times more likely to have inactive behavior. CONCLUSION: Most patients with intermittent claudication showed an inactive behavior and, in this population, lower walking capacity was associated with this behavior.

This study presents new information on the feeding habits of the Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis, in the Western South Atlantic. Nine stomach contents of S. frontalis incidentally caught in fishing operations conducted by the gillnet fleet based on main harbour of Cananéia (25°00'S; 47°55'W), southeastern Brazil, were analyzed. These specimens were captured between 2005 and 2007. A total of 1 422 cephalopod beaks, 147 otoliths and three crustaceans were recovered from the stomach contents. The dolphins assessed preyed on at least eight different fish species of the families Trichiuridae, Carangidae, Sparidae, Merluccidae, Engraulidae, Sciaenidae, Congridae and Scombridae, five cephalopod species of the families Loliginidae, Sepiolidae, Tremoctopodidae and Thysanoteuthidae, and one shrimp species of the Penaeidae family. Based on the analysis of the Index of Relative Importance (IRI), the Atlantic cutlassfish, Trichiurus lepturus, was the most important fish species represented. Of the cephalopods, the squid Doryteuthis plei was by far the most representative species. Several items were reported for the first time as prey of the S. frontalis: Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, Tremoctopus violaceus, Semirossia tenera, Merluccius hubbsi, Pagrus pagrus and Paralonchurus brasiliensis. S. frontalis presented teuthophagous and ichthyofagous feeding habits, with apparent predominance of the first, and preyed mainly on pelagic and demersal items.

AIMS: The relationship between the activity of eosinophils and platelets has been observed in recent decades by many scientists. These observations include increased numbers of eosinophils associated with platelet disorders, including changes in the coagulation cascade and platelet aggregation. Based on these observations, the interaction between eosinophils and platelets in platelet aggregation was analyze. MAIN METHODS: Human platelets were incubated with eosinophil cytosolic fraction, promyelocytic human HL-60 clone 15 cell lineage, and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP). Platelet rich plasma (PRP) aggregation was induced by adenosine diphosphate, platelet activating factor, arachidonic acid, and collagen, and washed platelets (WP) were activated by thrombin. KEY FINDINGS: Aggregation induced by all agonists was dose dependently inhibited by eosinophil cytosolic fraction. This inhibition was only partially reversed by previous incubation of the eosinophils with l-Nitro-Arginine-Methyl-Ester (l-NAME). Previous incubation with indomethacin did not prevent the cytosolic fraction induced inhibition. The separation of eosinophil cytosolic fraction by gel filtration on Sephadex G-75 showed that the inhibitory activity was concentrated in the lower molecular weight fraction. HL-60 clone 15 cells differentiated into eosinophils for 5 and 7 day were able to inhibit platelet aggregation. The ECP protein inhibited the platelet aggregation on PRP and WP. This inhibition was more evident in WP, and the citotoxicity MTT assay proved the viability of tested platelets, showing that the observed inhibition by the ECP protein does not occur simply by cell death. SIGNIFICANCE: Our results indicate that eosinophils play a fundamental role in platelet aggregation inhibition
