The main source of protein for human and animal consumption is from the agricultural sector, where the production is vulnerable to diseases, fluctuations in climatic conditions and deteriorating hydrological conditions due to water pollution. Therefore Single Cell Protein (SCP) production has evolved as an excellent alternative. Among all sources of microbial protein, yeast has attained global acceptability and has been preferred for SCP production. The screening and evaluation of nutritional and other culture variables of microorganisms are very important in the development of a bioprocess for SCP production. The application of statistical experimental design in bioprocess development can result in improved product yields, reduced process variability, closer confirmation of the output response to target requirements and reduced development time and overall cost.The present work was undertaken to develop a bioprocess technology for the mass production of a marine yeast, Candida sp.S27. Yeasts isolated from the offshore waters of the South west coast of India and maintained in the Microbiology Laboratory were subjected to various tests for the selection of a potent strain for biomass production. The selected marine yeast was identified based on ITS sequencing. Biochemical/nutritional characterization of Candida sp.S27 was carried out. Using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) the process parameters (pH, temperature and salinity) were optimized. For mass production of yeast biomass, a chemically defined medium (Barnett and Ingram, 1955) and a crude medium (Molasses-Yeast extract) were optimized using RSM. Scale up of biomass production was done in a Bench top Fermenter using these two optimized media. Comparative efficacy of the defined and crude media were estimated besides nutritional evaluation of the biomass developed using these two optimized media.

Anti-lipopolysaccharide factors (ALFs), a type of cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), and their derivatives are becoming predominant candidates for potential drugs in viral and bacterial diseases. This study reports the first ALF from the mud crab Scylla tranquebarica (StALF, JQ899453) and the second ALF isoform from the blue swimmer crab Portunus pelagicus (PpALF2, JQ899452). Both sequences encoded for precursor molecules, starting with a signal peptide containing 26 amino acid residues, followed by a highly cationic mature peptide, containing two conserved cysteine residues flanking a putative lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-binding domain. BLAST analysis revealed that both PpALF2 and StALF exhibited significant similarity with crustacean ALF sequences. The predicted molecular mass of the mature ALFs was 11.2 kDa with an estimated pI of 10.0. PpALF2 and StALF also showed the typical pattern of alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic residues in their putative disulphide loop, suggesting that they comprise the same functional domain. Phylogenetic analysis showed that PpALF2 and StALF have similar evolutionary status and they were phylogenetically ancient immune effector molecules which may play an essential role in the host defense mechanism. The spatial structures of PpALF2 and StALF possessed four beta-strands and two alpha-helices. The results indicated that there were more than one ALF involved in crab immunity against various pathogens. ALFs would provide candidate promising therapeutic or prophylactic agents in health management and diseases control in crustacean aquaculture

En muchas ocasiones, el alumnado no es capaz de establecer relaci??n entre la obra literaria y su propio entorno. Piensan que las creaciones literarias pertenecen a un mundo remoto en el tiempo y en el espacio. No obstante, tienen referencias indirectas de que su ciudad ha sido cuna o residencia de algunos autores famosos. El paseo literario es una actividad complementaria que tiene como objetivo reducir ese distanciamiento entre la obra literaria y el entorno cotidiano del alumnado, mostr??ndole que comparte con los autores un mismo referente. Adem??s se promueven objetivos relacionados con el inter??s por la lectura y la creaci??n literaria, as?? como la valoraci??n de la cultura e historia de su entorno. Para que esta actividad alcance los objetivos previstos es necesario prepararla cuidadosamente y con cierta antelaci??n en clase.

Los materiales curriculares publicados por la Consejería de Educación y Ciencia de la Junta de Andalucía para la educación primaria (cajas verdes) han cubierto un hueco bibliográfico e informativo bastante necesario para formular y ajustar, desde las diferentes comunidades educativas y claustros, la propuesta curricular elaborada para Andalucía, sin embargo aún hace falta una línea de publicación que permita aproximar los Decretos de Enseñanza a las aulas (Proyecto de Aula, programaciones, unidades didácticas...) de forma que los equipos docentes puedan acercarse y conocer, desde distintos niveles de profundidad, procesos didácticos fundamentados en el actual modelo curricular y de esta manera facilitar, de algún modo, su desarrollo o puesta en práctica.
