The reaction of 2,6-diformylpyridine-bis(benzoylhydrazone) [dfpbbh] and 2,6-diformylpyridine-bis(4-phenylsemicarbazone) [dfpbpsc] with lanthanides salts yielded the new chelates complexes [Eu(dfpbpsc-H +) 2]NO 3 (1), [Dy(fbhmp) 2][Dy(dfpbbh-2H +) 2]·2EtOH·2H 2O (fbhmp = 2-formylbenzoylhydrazone-6-methoxide-pyridine; Ph = phenyl; Py = pyridine; Et = ethyl) and [Er 2(dfpbbh-2H +) 2(μ-NO 3)(H 2O) 2(OH)]·H 2O. X-ray diffraction analysis was employed for the structural characterization of the three chelate complexes. In the case of complex 1, optical, synthetic and computational methods were also exploited for ground state structure determinations and triplet energy level of the ligand and HOMO-LUMO calculations, as well as for a detailed study of its luminescence properties. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Two new HgCl2 complexes of tridentate nitrogen ligands were characterized by X-ray crystallography, proton NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS. The five-coordinate complex [Hg(BMPA)Cl-2] (1) (BMPA = bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine) crystallized from acetonitrile/m-xylene by slow evaporation in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 8.3896(8) , b = 12.8020(13) , c = 13.3526(13) , alpha = 90A degrees, beta A = 90.480(2)A degrees, gamma A = 90A degrees and z = 4. The square pyramidal structure (tau = 0.009) has approximate C (s) symmetry. Despite comparable Hg-N bond lengths in 1, inversion of the central nitrogen was rapid on the chemical shift time scale in dilute solution except at very low temperatures. The related complex [Hg(BEPA)Cl-2] (2) (BEPA = bis(2-{pyrid-2-yl}ethyl)amine) crystallized from acetonitrile/ethyl acetate/hexanes by slow diffusion in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with a = 13.424(3) , b = 14.854(3) , c = 8.118(2) , alpha = 90A degrees, beta A = 90A degrees, gamma A = 90A degrees and z = 4. The mixed geometry structure (tau = 0.56) also has crystallographic mirror symmetry as well as C (s) point group symmetry. In dilute acetonitrile solution, 1 was stable while 2 slowly converted to a more thermodynamically stable complex.

From 1888 until 1893 the district was a booming mining camp. Seven stamp mills were running and ore was being mined from the Independence, King Solomon, Poorman, Golden, Hidden Treasure and Crown claims. The town of Independence, which was on the Boulder River at the fork of Basin Creek, boasted a population of 400 people.

[1] We present quantitative autumn, summer and annual precipitation and summer temperature reconstructions from proglacial annually laminated Lake Silvaplana, eastern Swiss Alps back to AD 1580. We used X-ray diffraction peak intensity ratios of minerals in the sediment layers (quartz qz, plagioclase pl, amphibole am, mica mi) that are diagnostic for different source areas and hydro-meteorological transport processes in the catchment. XRD data were calibrated with meteorological data (AD 1800/1864–1950) and revealed significant correlations: mi/pl with SON precipitation (r = 0.56, p < 0.05) and MJJAS precipitation (r = 0.66, p < 0.01); qz/mi with MJJAS temperature (r = −0.72, p < 0.01)and qz/am with annual precipitation (r = −0.54, p < 0.05). Geological catchment settings and hydro-meteorological processes provide deterministic explanations for the correlations. Our summer temperature reconstruction reproduces the typical features of past climate variability known from independent data sets. The precipitation reconstructions show a LIA climate moister than today. Exceptionally wet periods in our reconstruction coincide with regional glacier advances.

Sedimentary rocks of Barremian through early Maestrichtian age recovered on Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 61 had their principal source in the complex of igneous rocks with which they are interlayered in the Nauru Basin. Relict textures and primary sedimentary structures show these Cretaceous sediments to be of hyaloclastic origin, in part reworked and redeposited by slumps and currents. The dominant composition now is smectite, but locally iron, titanium, and manganese oxides, plagioclase, pyroxene, analcime, clinoptilolite, chalcedonic quartz, cristobalite, amphibole, nontronite, celadonite, and pyrite are also present. The mineral assemblages and the geochemistry reflect the original basaltic composition and its subsequent alteration by one or more processes of submarine weathering, authigenesis, hydrothermal circulation, and contact metamorphism. Hyaloclastitic sandstone, siltstone, and breccia within the sheet flows below 729 meters sub-bottom depth have Barremian fossils, thus establishing the age of the lower, or extrusive, complex of post-ridge-crest volcanism. Similar hyaloclastites between 564 and 729 meters are invaded by hypabyssal sills of the upper igneous complex, and fossil ages of Albian or Cenomanian set an older limit to the age of that second post-ridge-crest episode. Cenomanian to early Campanian sedimentary rocks between 490 and 564 meters have a substantial contribution of clays of submarine-weathered-basalt origin, as well as hydrothermal and pelagic components. The interval of reworked hyaloclastitic siltstone, sandstone, and breccias between 450 and 490 meters is of late Campanian and early Maestrichtian age. These sediments probably formed from glassy basalt that fragmented upon eruption nearby, when sills were being emplaced. In addition to pelagic elements, these Upper Cretaceous volcanogenic sediments include redeposited material of shallow-water origin, apparently derived from the Marshall Islands.
