The original objective of this project was to determine the effect of varying current intensity and electrode coating composition upon the spatter losses and porosity of arc welds made by alternating current. This subject was suggested by the Welding Research Council of the Engineering Foundation, which is a clearing house for welding research in order to avoid duplication of work.

The purpose of this thesis is to elucidate this phenomena of frother incompatibility, and to offer an explanation based upon several divergent lines of investigation. The research was limited to four common frothing agents, namely, pine oil, n-amyl alcohol, sodium oleate, and sodium lauryl sulphate (Dreft).

The wartime demand for fluorspar has caused renewed interest in fluorite deposits. Near Silver Bow, Montana, a deposit of massive, coarsely crystalline fluorspar, which has not been described in the literature, has attracted the attention of the United States Geological Survey.

A large number of alloys of varying percentages of copper and antimony were prepared. These alloys were treated in various ways which might be expected to produce age hardening. The effect of cold working was studied in the range where the alloys were malleable.

An attempt was made to deposit a 50:50 copper-cobalt alloy from various sulfate electrolytes. No true 50:50 alloy was obtained but various mixtures of cobalt and copper rich crystals were deposited.

A method to measure hydrogen overvoltage was developed and checked with metals of known overvoltage. Alloys of bismuth and antimony and of bismuth and cadmium were prepared and their overvoltages determined.

A determination of the solubility of zinc ethyl xanthate was attempted by measuring the refractive index of a saturated solution of that salt. The small increment in refractive index effected by adding zinc ethyl xanthate to water in saturation quantities rendered measurements difficult and of dubious accuracy.

A nickel plating operation for magnesium alloys was investigated and proved successful in plating a small sample of a typical commercial magnesium alloy, Dowmetal J1.

The purpose of this investigation is to record data pertaining to porosity and permeability derived from physical tests performed on Devonian dolomites occurring in northwestern Montana, and to subsequently summarize the results obtained as an aid in determining the possibility of those dolomites being suitable reservoir rocks for oil and gas accumulation.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the occurrence and character of the vermiculite deposits approximately four miles northwest of Pony; Madison County, Montana. The deposits are situated in rolling foothills at the northern end of the Tobacco Root Mountains.

In the past the steel industry of the United States has depended almost wholly on imports for its supplies of manganese. Although it is well known that there are enormous deposits of low grade manganese ore in the United States the production of substantial amounts of ferro-grade material from domestic sources presents a field for constructive and practical research.
